For admission to the MBA course at IIM or any other B-schools, they all consider the CAT percentile. For the calculation of the CAT percentile, the raw CAT scores of candidates are converted through a formula. It is done to ensure that the candidate's performance across the CAT exam session is assessed on the same scale. A high CAT score may not convert into a high CAT percentile if the appearance of candidates is high.

As mentioned above, to get admission in IIMs, each IIM releases its minimum required IIM sectional cut-off 2026. It is mandatory for all students selected for further rounds to meet the minimum CAT cutoff. The eligible IIM CAT cut-off will be released before the CAT result is declared. The table given below shows category-wise sectional CAT cut-offs along with overall CAT percentile released by ABC IIMs for the CAT 2026 exam.
Listed below are some of the key factors considered by IIMs for determining the CAT cutoff.

1. Difficulty level of the question paper: This is one of the main reasons why CAT 2026 is so important. The greater the difficulty level of the CAT question paper, the lower the cutoff will be, and vice versa.
2. Number of Test Takers: The total number of candidates appearing in the IIM CAT 2026 will have an impact on the CAT cutoff. This will have a direct relationship, i.e. higher CAT test-takers will lead to a higher IIM CAT cutoff, while lower CAT test-takers will have a lower CAT cutoff in 2026.
3. Seat availability: The number of seats available at the respective IIMs is also affected by the CAT 2026 cut-off. For example, if any IIM has limited seats, the published cutoff of CAT 2026 will be higher for selecting candidates.
4. The reputation of the Institute: Renowned institutes ranked under the NIRF Management Rankings will set their cut-offs higher.
5. Last year's CAT cutoff trends: The CAT cut-off for IIM is based on the previous year’s cut-offs released by IIMs. The CAT 2026 cutoff may be somewhere around past cutoff trends.

IIM candidates should be aware of the difference between the two types of CAT cut-offs that play an important role in the admission process. There are two types of cut-offs: Qualifying CAT cut-off for IIM and Final CAT cut-off (IIM Call cut off). Below we have listed the differences between the two:
| CAT Qualifying Cutoff 2026 | CAT Final Cutoff 2026 |
|---|---|
Also known as the IIM eligibility cut off for IIM shortlist cut off, these are the minimum marks a candidate must score, so he/ she will be eligible for an interview call from IIMs (WAT/ GD-PI round). | Also referred to as the IIM call cut-off, this is the minimum percentage score set by IIMs to select candidates for the WAT/ GD-PI round. |
Meeting the qualifying MBA admission cutoff does not mean that the candidate will be selected for the WAT/ GD-PI round. | Meeting the final CAT cut-off 2026 does not mean that the candidate will be selected for admission. |
The qualifying IIM CAT cutoff is fixed before the CAT result announcement. | The final cutoff will be fixed after the CAT 2026 results are announced. |
Qualifying CAT Percentile for IIM will be announced by each campus in the announcement of the admission criteria and selection process for that academic year. | The final IIM CAT cutoff 2026 has not been officially announced yet by any IIM or other top MBA institutes. |
Qualifying IIM cutoff 2026 is expected to be over the 90 percentile for all IIMs. | The final CAT cutoff will be 99+ percentile for all the best IIMs and 95+ per cent for the new IIMs. |
The qualifying cutoff contains the CAT sectional cutoff marks and the overall cutoff. | The final CAT 2026 cutoff contains a sectional cutoff in CAT and a CAT percentile for IIM. |
The qualifying CAT cut off for SC is fixed. The CAT cut off for IIM for OBC/ General is high. | The final CAT cut off is fixed category-wise. For the general category male students with engineering backgrounds, the final cutoff is high as compared to reserved-category students, female students, and those with non-engineering backgrounds. |
