Thousands of CAT aspirants each year lose months preparing for topics that are scarcely tested in the examination. The problem is not the lack of hard work; it is falling prey to myths about CAT preparation that have been propagated for years. There being no published syllabus for IIMs, these myths spread fast.

In this article, we have discussed and busted top myths that become the root of CAT preparation mistakes.
The students often create long CAT study plans to "finish" every chapter since there is no official syllabus by IIM. While this may seem like the safest strategy, it is one of the common CAT 2026 preparation mistakes.
Also, CAT is a relative ranking examination; therefore, the percentile depends on how well you perform as compared to other candidates. Thus, the candidates who identify the right question with high accuracy will score a high CAT percentile.
As per Careers360's analysis of the last five years’ papers, there is a group of topics that have contributed more questions than others. For instance, in Quantitative Aptitude, Arithmetic accounts for around 8–10 questions, while Algebra contributes another 6–8 questions in most years. Around two-thirds of the questions in CAT 2026 are from the Quant section in the CAT exam 2026.
This kind of pattern was observed in the VARC section as well, and 16 to 18 questions were from the Reading Comprehension section.
Another myth that students believe is that questions from Quantitative Aptitude will be in the same order as in the book. will not be similar to the book. Although this is a winning CAT preparation strategy, it is rarely the most effective way to prepare for the exam.
The problem is that most CAT Quant books are arranged to teach mathematical concepts. They are not designed to match the CAT exam pattern. As a result, you may spend several weeks covering topics that appear less frequently in the exam while delaying the sections that carry the highest weightage.
An analysis of recent CAT question papers showed that 60% of the Quant questions were from Arithmetic and Algebra. A major part of the question paper had questions from topics such as Percentages, Profit and Loss, Time and Work, Averages, Ratios, Linear and Quadratic Equations, and Functions.
In contrast, Number Systems and Modern Mathematics usually contribute far fewer questions.
CAT Quant Topic | Approximate Questions in CAT |

Another myth that most of the aspirants believe is that attempting CAT mock test leads to a high percentile in the exam. Well, this sounds logical as CAT is a competitive examination. However, the number of mocks you take matters far less than how well you analyse each one.
For instance, the duration of the CAT mock test is 120 minutes but during the analysis, you should do it thoroughly. It helps you identify the reasons behind every wrong, guessed, and skipped question.
Careers360's analysis of CAT toppers and mentors shows that candidates who consistently improve their percentile maintain an error log after every mock instead of immediately moving to the next test.
One of the best ways to do this is by classifying every incorrect or skipped question into one of these categories after completing each CAT mock test:
Concept gap
Application error
Calculation or reading mistake
Time management issue
Your analysis should also answer these questions:
Which topic gave the lowest accuracy?
Which questions should you have skipped?
Which easy questions were left unattempted?
How much time did you spend on questions that eventually turned out to be incorrect?
Many aspirants spend months memorising word lists because vocabulary seems like the easiest part of English to prepare. However, now, direct questions about vocabulary are not asked in the CAT exam.
Doing a proper analysis of the CAT VARC section showed that around 16 of the 24 questions were asked from Reading Comprehension. Whereas, the remaining questions are based on para summaries, para jumbles, and odd sentence out. Similarly, now there are no direct synonym, antonym, idiom, or one-word substitution questions in recent CAT papers.
In fact, a deep analysis of previous papers, VARC questions from CAT 2021–2025 stated that:
240 questions (67%) came from Reading Comprehension.
Inference alone made up nearly 50% of all RC questions and 33% of the entire VARC section.
This fear often comes due to lack of proper knowledge and a review of questions. Many CAT aspirants believe that only students with a strong mathematics background can score well in Quant.
The topics prescribed for the CAT Quant syllabus are based on the Mathematics that we have studied from classes 8 to 12. Topics that form the core of the Quantitative Aptitude section are Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Number System, Modern Maths, and Mensuration. There is no higher mathematics, such as calculus, matrices, or differential equations, in the exam. However, what makes IIM CAT different is that the questions are logical and application-centric.
The CAT exam pattern also shows that you do not need to solve every question. In recent CAT papers, the Quant section has 22 questions, and candidates targeting a 99 percentile typically attempt only around 15–18 questions with high accuracy, not all 22. This makes concept clarity and question selection more important than advanced mathematical knowledge.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
IIMs release the exam pattern and marking scheme but not a detailed topic-wise syllabus. It's inferred from years of past papers.
Most mentors recommend roughly 15–20 full-length mocks over your preparation window, provided each one is followed by thorough analysis.
Yes. CAT Quant tests logical application of school-level concepts, not engineering-level mathematics, so background matters far less than consistent, focused practice.
No, but pause to check whether you're actually analyzing each mock in depth before taking the next one. A plateau is usually an analysis problem, not a "need more mocks" problem.
