Admission Criteria for the IIM Bangalore: Selection Process

According to NIRF 2024, IIM Bangalore was ranked as no 2 in the management category. While the final cut-off list includes the higher cut-off percentile the candidates also need to understand what are the admission criteria under the selection process of the IIM Bangalore.

As mentioned earlier the IIM Bangalore has an extensive selection process conducted in several phases. Here is the admission criteria for IIM Bangalore

  • First, a short list is prepared based on a pre-determined minimum score in all sections of CAT 2024. Those candidates who have secured those minimum marks will be considered for the first shortlist. All the subsequent processing, standardization, and selection are limited to candidates in the first shortlist alone.

  • Then for the candidates selected in the first list a ‘Pre PI score’ is created. This ‘PRE-PI’ score takes into account several factors including CAT score (55), marks of Class 10 (10), marks of Class 12 (10), marks obtained in the bachelor’s degree courses (10), Work experience /professional courses (10), and the gender diversity (5).

  • Out of the 55 marks allotted to CAT, VARC, DILR, QA has 19, 21, and 15 marks respectively.

  • The scores for class 10, class 12, and the bachelor's degree courses are normalized.

  • Candidates with Chartered Accountancy (CA), Cost Accounting (ICWA), or Company Secretary (CS) certifications are eligible for weightage under the category of professional course. The scores obtained in these professional courses (Final year completed only) are normalized and weightage is calculated.

  • The pre-PI score for work experience is (10x/36) if 0<x<36.
    10 if x>= 36.
(x is the duration of the work experience in months)

  • For candidates in the first shortlist, the top 10 candidates in each of the following categories automatically qualify for the PI stage: total score in CAT, adjusted bachelor’s degree score (commerce, arts, and science disciplines), and professional (CA / ICWA / CS) score. Post PI, all such candidates are evaluated in the same way as any other candidate.

  • Based on the pre-PI score, a certain number of candidates from each category are selected for the next stage in the admission process.

  • The second stage of the admissions process at IIMB consists of a personal interview (PI) and a Written Ability Test (WAT) where candidates will be required to write a note.

  • The PI and the WAT will happen on the same day and in the same location. The duration of the WAT is approximately 30 minutes. The WAT will be evaluated based on the content and style of the note.

  • For all candidates called for interviews, the weights for the parameters at the post-PI stage are as follows: Personal interview = 40, WAT = 10, CAT = 25, 10th board score = 5, 12th board score = 5, Bachelor’s score = 5, Work Experience / Professional Course = 10. The 25 points for CAT are derived from the performance in each of the three sections as follows: Verbal and Reading Comprehension (VARC) - 8.75 points, Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning (DILR) - 10 points, and Quantitative Aptitude (QA) – 6.25 points.

  • Final offers of admission to candidates from each category will be made strictly based on the post-PI scores

Questions related to CAT

Have a question related to CAT ?

Hello Greetings

With a CAT 2024 percentile of 68.28%, you may face a challenging time getting into IIT Delhi, as their cutoffs are typically higher. However, being an SC female student, you may be eligible for relaxation in the cutoff criteria .

To give you a better idea, here are some general CAT cutoff percentiles for IITs and other top B-schools:

- *IIT Delhi*: Typically above 90 percentile for general category students.

- *Newer IIMs*: Such as IIM Vishakapatnam, IIM Shillong, and IIM Udaipur, may have lower cutoffs, around 80-90 percentile.

- *Other top B-schools*: Like IMT Ghaziabad, XIM Bhubaneswar, and TAPMI, may also consider students with lower percentiles.

It's essential to note that CAT cutoffs can vary from year to year, and other factors like your academic background, work experience, and performance in the personal interview (PI) and written ability test (WAT) also play a significant role in the admission process.

To explore more options and predict your chances of getting into various colleges, you can use online CAT college predictor tools .

Have a great day

Hello Greetings

Considering your 82.58 percentile in CAT and 22 months of industry experience in IT and Financial analysis, you have several options for General Management PGDM or PGPM programs.

*Decent Colleges Accepting Low CAT Percentile:*

- _SPJIMR_: Offers PGDM and PGPM programs, accepting CAT scores, with a minimum eligibility criterion of 50% aggregate in graduation ¹ ².

- _SOIL_: Provides PGPM and PGDM programs, considering CAT scores, with a focus on experiential learning ³.

- Other institutes like _IMT Ghaziabad_, _XIMB_, and _IRMA_ might also accept candidates with lower CAT percentiles, but this may vary depending on the program and intake.

*Key Factors to Consider:*

- _Work Experience_: With 22 months of experience, you might be eligible for PGPM programs, which typically require more work experience than PGDM programs ¹.

- _Career Gap_: Explain your career gap effectively in your application, highlighting any relevant activities or skills gained during that period.

- _Profile-Based Selection_: Some institutes consider profiles, including work experience, academic background, and extracurricular activities, in addition to CAT scores ¹.

*Next Steps:*

1. Research the institutes mentioned above and their programs.

2. Review the eligibility criteria, admission process, and fees for each program.

3. Prepare your application, ensuring you effectively communicate your strengths, work experience, and career goals.

4. Be prepared for interviews, focusing on your profile, experience, and motivation for pursuing a PGDM or PGPM program.

Remember, a lower CAT percentile doesn't necessarily limit your options. Focus on showcasing your strengths, experience, and fit with the program to increase your chances of admission.

Have a great day

M/s Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited, one of the top four audit and accounting firms in the world with headquarters at London, UK, and with an operational presence in 153 countries, hires Management Trainees (MT) from all the premier management institutes of India thrice every year, in the months of January, May and September.

Two friends Moloy and Niloy passed out from the Purulia Institute of Science and Technology with B.Tech degrees in Mechanical Engineering, but even after a year placement was hard to find. So they decided to take the challenge head-on, came down to Kolkata, rented a garage space on Park Street, and having an affinity towards making people enjoy good food, started their firm named 'B.Tech Bread-Omlette Wala'.

They started with three items on the menu. One was the French Toast which could be prepared in 3 minutes. The second was the Egg Tortillas which took 15 minutes to prepare. Any one of Moloy and Niloy could prepare any one of them at a time. The third was the Egg Bhurji with French Fries. This however was prepared on an automated fryer which could prepare 3 servings at a time and took 5 minutes irrespective of the number of servings equal to or below 3. The fryer did not need anyone to attend to it, and the time to put in the raw ingredients could be neglected. So one could tend to the preparation of other items while the Egg Bhurji with French Fries were being prepared.

They wanted to serve the orders as early as possible after the order was given. The individual items in any order were served as and when all the items were ready, and the order was then considered closed. None of the items on the menu were prepared in advance in anticipation of future orders.

On the first day, 3 groups of customers came in and ordered at 6.00 pm, 6.10 pm, and 6.13 pm. The first order was for a plate of Egg Tortillas, two plates of French Toast, and three plates of Egg Bhurji with French Fries. The second order was for a plate of French Toast and two plates of Egg Bhurji with French Fries. The third order was for a plate of Egg Tortilla and a plate of Egg Bhurji with French Fries.
