IIMs are the top management institutes in India in several rankings and surveys (NIRF, Business Today, India Today, Financial Times). There are 21 IIMs in India offering various MBA, PGP, Executive MBA, PGDM, and Fellowship programmes (IIM Mumbai was added recently).

The top 3 IIMs are the oldest campuses. IIM Calcutta and IIM Ahmedabad were established in 1961. IIM Bangalore was established after 12 years in 1973. Between 2008 to 2016, 14 IIMs were established. The latest addition to IIMs is IIM Mumbai, which was earlier NITIE Mumbai. In 2023, NITIE was renamed IIM Mumbai.

List of IIMs in India: All India NIRF Ranking 2023 for MBA

Below is the list of IIMs by year of establishment and the All India NIRF MBA Ranking. IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Calcutta are the oldest among all the IIM colleges in India and IIM Jammu is the youngest.

IIM Admission Process

The admission process for IIMs includes a CAT entrance test, a written aptitude test (WAT), group discussions (GD) and a personal interview (PI). For the flagship programme of IIM - MBA/ PGP, CAT scores are accepted for admission.

Foreign candidates can apply through the GMAT. Candidates have to appear for CAT (GMAT in the case of international students) and then qualify for the WAT-GD-PI round for admission. For executive programmes, the selection of candidates is usually done on the basis of a written test, work experience, statement of purpose, etc. prepared by the institute.

IIMs in India: Programmes Offered

IIMs offer postgraduate, doctoral, and executive education programmes:

• MBA/PGP: The two-year Post Graduate Programme (PGP) in Management programme is the flagship programme at all IIMs and is considered equivalent to regular MBA programmes. After the enactment of the IIM Act 2017, most of the IIMs have started offering Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees. IIMs are well known and rated for this two year full time MBA/ PGP course.

• EPGP: Executive Post Graduate Programme (EPGP) is offered by almost all IIMs. This course is designed for mid-level professionals with 5-12 years of work experience.

• PGPX: Some IIMs also offer a one-year postgraduate diploma programme for graduates with work experience.

• FPM: Some IIMs offer a Fellow Programme in Management (FPM), a doctoral programme that is globally considered equivalent to a Ph.D.

• IPM: Integrated Programme in Management (IPM) is one of the five-year post-12 courses offered by IIM Indore, IIM Ranchi, IIM Rohtak, IIM Bodh Gaya and IIM Jammu.

• Certificate Executive Programmes (Short-Term or Part Time): Most IIMs also offer part-time programmes, short-term executive education/ EMBA courses.

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad, is the first IIM in India. Established in 1961, the college has been ranked among the best in the world for its various management programmes.

2. IIM Bangalore

Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore, is best known for its flagship Post Graduate Programme (PGP) in Management. Globally, it has been ranked in the top 50 for many years.

3. IIM Calcutta

Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Calcutta, has been ranked fourth in the MHRD-NIRF Ranking 2023. Established in 1961, IIM Calcutta offers three management courses - full time, executive, and fellow programmes.

4. IIM Kozhikode

Established in 1997, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kozhikode has shown steady growth in its reputation and quality of education over the years, which is why the MHRD-NIRF Ranking 2023 has ranked it 3rd among the top established business schools.

5. IIM Lucknow

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Lucknow was established in 1984. It offers various PGP, EPGP, and Fellow programmes and is the first IIM to set up a satellite campus in a different city (Noida).

6. IIM Indore

7. IIM Trichy

Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Tiruchirappalli is one of the newest additions to the collection of IIM campuses. Established in 2011, IIM Trichy has been ranked 22nd in MHRD-NIRF Ranking 2023. Currently it offers PGPM and FMP programmes.

8. IIM Udaipur

Established in 2009, Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Udaipur is ranked 16th in the MHRD-NIRF Ranking 2023. Apart from PGP, the institute offers fellowship programs, executive programs, and an entrepreneurship programme exclusively for women.

9. IIM Shillong

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Shillong was established in 2008 with the aim of providing world-class management education in the northeastern region of the country.

10. IIM Ranchi

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ranchi was established in 2010 under the auspices of IIM Calcutta. It is one of the few IIMs that offer Human Resource Management programmes. Apart from this, IIM Ranchi offers PGDM in General Management, FPM and Management programmes. It also offers a 5-year integrated MBA programme.

11. IIM Bodh Gaya

Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bodh Gaya is one of the new IIM campuses. It was established in 2015. This institute currently only offers the PGP programme.

12. IIM Rohtak

Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Rohtak was established in 2009. Within 10 years of its establishment, IIM Rohtak started offering various courses.

Established in 2015, Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Amritsar currently offers only PGP programmes. Despite being one of the newer campuses, IIM Amritsar has a good reputation among recruiters.

14. IIM Kashipur

Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kashipur was established in 2011 and currently offers the institute's flagship PGP and FPM programmes.

15. IIM Raipur

Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Raipur was established in 2010 by the Government of India (GOI). The institute currently offers PGP, FPM and EFPM.

16. IIM Visakhapatnam

Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Visakhapatnam was established in 2015 and currently offers PGP, PGCEP (Weekend Program for Business Professionals) and FPM.

17. IIM Jammu

Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Jammu is the latest addition to the IIM cluster. Established in 2016, the institute currently offers PGP and FPM along with some open programmes in executive education.

18. IIM Nagpur

Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Nagpur is another newly established campus offering PGP programme. It was established in 2015.

19. IIM Sirmaur

Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Sirmaur was established in 2015 and is mentored by IIM Lucknow. It currently only offers the PGP program.

20. IIM Sambalpur

Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Sambalpur was established in 2015. It currently offers a Master Programme - PGP with Executive and Fellow courses.

21. IIM Mumbai

Formerly NITIE, Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Mumbai is ranked 7th in NIRF Ranking 2023. NITIE was established in 1963 and since then it has been producing top quality management graduates. It offers MBA, MBA Sustainability Management), MBA (Supply Chain and Management), PGDEX and other global certifications.
