XAT Exam pattern 2018: XAT 2018 will be conducted on January 7, 2018, by XLRI Jamshedpur in an online mode. For the first time, XAT will be conducted in online mode. Till last year, XAT was a traditional paper pencil based exam. XAT 2018 exam pattern will help candidates to know more about the question paper pattern, marking scheme, duration, total number of questions, etc. As per the exam pattern of XAT 2018, it will be an online paper based test of 3.5 hours duration. The exam is divided into two parts. Paper 1 consists of three sections carrying around 70 objective type multiple choice questions. Paper 2 carries two sections which are a mix of objective and subjective type of questions. The number of questions are not fixed and keep changing every year. Last year, the conducting authorities introduced few changes related to the marking scheme. This article brings to you the detailed account of XAT paper structure, question types and marking scheme.

Highlights of XAT 2018 Exam Pattern
Marking Scheme: Each XAT 2018 question will carry one mark and for each wrong answer there will be negative marking of 0.25 marks. Candidates are allowed to leave out 12 questions, beyond which they have to incur negative marking of 0.05 marks.
Sections: There are three sections in Paper 1, Decision Making, Verbal and Logical Ability and Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation. Last year, QA & DI section was given maximum weightage. Paper 2 consists of two sections. General Knowledge section carries 25 objective type multiple choice questions and the subjective part includes Essay Writing where only one topic is given.
Duration: The total duration of XAT 2018 is 3.5 hours. Paper 1 is of 170 minutes duration. After which there will be a break of five minutes followed by Paper 2. The total duration of Paper 2 is 35 minutes. According to XLRI, the candidates should ideally spend 20 minutes on the essay writing and 15 minutes on GK.
Mode of Answering: XAT 2018 is to be conducted in online mode and candidates will need to answer by clicking the right option using a mouse. The rough work can be done in the margin of a rough sheet. For Paper 2, the essay has to be written in the space provided with the blue/black ball pen.
Number of questions - The number of questions may change this year based on the discretion of conducting authorities. Last year, the total number of questions in Paper 1 was 72 with highest weightage in Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation section. The number of questions in Paper 2 is constant, with 25 questions from GK and one essay writing topic.
Although there is no specific XAT syllabus released by XLRI Jamshedpur, upon going through the past question papers and XAT sample papers will give the aspirants broad idea about the exam and guide about preparing.
XAT 2018 notification along with XAT important dates has been released on August 14, 2017. Approximately 90,000 candidates are expected to appear for the test. Around 150 B-schools across India will be accepting XAT scores for admission to their management programmes.
