XAT exam pattern 2018 will help candidates to know more about the question paper pattern, marking scheme, duration, the total number of questions, etc. The XAT 2018 exam has been conducted on Sunday, January 7, 2018. As per the exam pattern of XAT 2018, it was an online based test of 3.30 hours duration. The exam was divided into two parts. Part 1 consisted of three sections carrying around 74 objective type multiple choice questions. Part 2 had two sections which were a mix of objective (25 questions) and one essay. XLRI Jamshedpur had also made an alteration in the marking scheme. Candidates can leave upto eight unattempted questions, beyond which there will be negative marking of 0.05 marks. Last year, the limit of unattempted questions was 12. This article brings to you the detailed account of XAT paper structure, question types and marking scheme.

Highlights of XAT Exam Pattern 2018

  • Marking Scheme: Each XAT 2018 question carried one mark and for each wrong answer there will be negative marking of 0.25 marks. Candidates are allowed to leave out eight questions unattempted, beyond which they have to incur negative marking of 0.05 marks. Last year, the number was 12, which has been reduced to eight this year. 

  • Sections: There are three sections in Paper 1, Decision Making, Verbal and Logical Ability and Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation. This year, QA & DI section was given maximum weightage. Paper 2 consists of two sections. General Knowledge section had 25 objective type multiple choice questions and the subjective part consisted of Essay Writing where only one topic was given.

  • Duration: The total duration of XAT 2018 was 3.30 hours. Part 1 was of 170 minutes duration. After which there was a break of five minutes followed by Part 2. The total duration of Part 2 is 30 minutes. According to XLRI, the candidates should ideally spend 20 minutes on the essay writing and 15 minutes on General Knowledge.

  • Mode of Answering: XAT 2018 was conducted in online mode and candidates had to answer by clicking the right option using a mouse. The rough work can be done in the margin of a rough sheet. For Paper 2, the essay had to be typed in the space provided online.

  • Number of questions - The number of questions was 74. Last year, the total number of questions in Part 1 was 72 with highest weightage in Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation section. The number of questions in Part 2 remains constant, with 25 questions from GK and one essay writing topic.

Online XAT taking instructions

  • Only one question will be displayed on the computer screen at a time. The candidates should click on 'Next Question' to go to the next question or on 'Previous Question' button provided at the bottom of the screen to go to the previous question

  • The candidate should click on the correct choice, from the five options given. In case, the candidate does not wish to attempt the question, it can be left blank

  • The timer is available on the TOP RIGHT-HAND CORNER of the screen; candidates have to keep a tab on it to complete the exam within the allocated time

  • The candidate can choose to unmark his/her answer by clicking the 'Erase' button provided at the bottom of the screen

  • The questions can be answered in any order within the given time frame

  • The list of attempted and un-attempted questions is shown in the right side of the screen. Candidates can click on any of the attempted ones to revise the answers in case they wish so

  • Candidates have the option to bookmark a question in case they want to review it at a later stage by clicking on the 'Tag' button available at the bottom of the screen. The Bookmark on a particular question can be removed by clicking on the 'De-Tag' button provided at the bottom of the screen

  • The question palette at the right of the screen shows the following status of each of the questions numbered

[Green] You have answered the question

[Yellow] You have not answered the question and marked for review

[Purple] You have answered the question but marked for review

[White] You have not answered the question

 

PS: Questions which are attempted and marked for review would be treated as attempted questions only as long as the candidate does not 'Erase' the option selected 

  • Candidates should use the 'Next Question' OR 'Previous Question' button or click on the question number displayed on the right side of the screen to move back and forth between questions.

  • The answers will be saved whenever the candidate goes to the next question, by clicking on 'Previous Question' OR 'Next Question' button. However, the last question will be saved automatically after answering

  • If a candidate finishes the paper within the stipulated time, he/she can end the test by clicking the 'Preview Submit'  button. However, candidates will not be allowed to leave the test hall until the end of the stipulated time

  • On the completion of the test duration, even if the candidate does not click on an answer or does not click on the 'Preview Submit' button, the result will be saved automatically by the computer.   

Although there is no specific XAT syllabus released by XLRI Jamshedpur, upon going through the past question papers and XAT sample papers will give the aspirants broad idea about the exam and guide about preparing.

 

XAT 2018 notification along with XAT important dates had been released on August 14, 2017. Approximately 90,000 candidates appeared for the test. Around 150 B-schools across India will be accepting XAT scores for admission to their management programmes.
