But based on the previous years' question papers and analysis, aspirants can get an idea about XAT syllabus 2018. According to the exam pattern, XAT is a computer based test carrying a mix of objective and subjective type questions. The sections which are covered under XAT syllabus include Verbal & Logical Ability, Decision Making and Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation along with General Knowledge. Before moving to the detailed XAT syllabus 2018, let us take a look at the XAT exam pattern.

Marking Scheme: Each question carries one mark and for each wrong answer there is negative marking of 1/4 marks. After 12 unattempted questions, there will be negative marking of 0.05 marks.


XAT 2018 Syllabus – Section wise


Now we will bring to you the important topics from each section which are a must to prepare based on previous years’ analysis.


XAT Syllabus - Verbal and Logical Ability


The topics which are covered under this section include the following

  • Reading Comprehension

  • Vocabulary

  • Analogy based on vocabulary

  • Sentence correction

  • Grammar

  • Fill in the blanks

  • Critical Reasoning/Inference

  • Para Jumble

  • Cloze test

  • Pronunciation

  • Para Completion

  • Paragraph Formation Questions

  • Poem, etc.

Verbal Ability section was given the second highest weightage in XAT 2017 paper with 24 out of 72 questions. The sectional difficulty level was moderate to tough.


XAT Syllabus - Decision Making


Decision Making is an exclusive section for XAT. The questions come in the form of caselets. Generally a particular situation and problem is given and the test takers are asked to choose the ideal solution from the options. The topics to prepare for are:

  • Arithmetic

  • Analytical Reasoning

  • Situational, etc.

According to XAT analysis of last year, Decision Making was the trickiest section and carried around 30 per cent of the questions.


XAT Syllabus - Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation (QA & DI)


This section carries the highest weightage. The topics which must be prepared in order to score high in QA & DI section are:



  • Equations

  • Percentage

  • Profit & Loss

  • Time & Distance

  • Time & Work, etc.

Algebra/Pure Math

  • Polynomials

  • Numbers

  • Progressions

  • Probability

  • Permutation & Combination

  • Geometry

  • Mensuration

  • Functions & Graphs

  • Trigonometry

  • Venn Diagram

  • Miscellaneous

Data Interpretation

  • Data Sufficiency

  • Scatter Plots and Bar Charts

  • Table, etc.

The difficulty level of this section was moderate to tough.


XAT Syllabus - General Knowledge


This section is asked in Paper 2 and contains 25 questions. The questions from this section are divided into static GK and current affairs. Last year, majority of the questions were from static GK followed by current affairs. The topics are as follows:

  • History

  • Currency

  • Invention

  • Geography

  • National Capital

  • Culture

  • Books and authors

  • Personalities

  • Important Dates

  • Film

  • Science and Business, etc.

Current Affairs

  • Economics

  • Film & Television

  • Ecosystem & Diversity, etc.

Essay Writing: As far as the Essay Writing section is concerned, there is no specific XAT syllabus to prepare for. The topics are generally abstract in nature which candidates can relate to an event of recent significance instead of keeping the content generic.


The notification of XAT 2018 has been released on August 14, 2017, along with the XAT important dates. The XAT 2018 application form was available from August 16, 2017. Applicants can download their XAT admit card 2018 from December 20, 2017, onwards. The date for conducting XAT 2018 is January 7 in 47 cities across India and two international cities. Around 90,000 candidates are expected to take the test for admission in 150 B-schools across India. For the first time, XAT will be conducted in computer based mode.
