Runit Marda cracked CAT with 99.43 percentile to secure admission to all New IIMs and many other top B-schools. He finally opted for IIM Raipur for pursuing his PGP.
In his interview with Careers360, this IIM Raipur student shares how he focused on only one MBA entrance test- CAT, and scored high in Common Admission Test (CAT) 2013.
He also talks on his time-bound preparation strategy which helped him keep his preparation interesting. Runit underlines the importance of time management skills during the exam as he believes that it can highly influence the exam result.
Careers360: What was your main objective behind pursuing MBA? What are your aspirations?
Runit Marda: MBA was something which I could easily adapt to. It seemed a profession more close to my personal life. So, to align professional life more to my areas of interest I have chosen this course.
Careers360: Were there any other Management exams that you took?
Runit Marda: No. My only aim was to crack CAT with a good percentile, and I just focused all my energy into it.
Careers360: Why did you choose to join this B-School? Please also name other B-schools which made final admission offers to you.
Runit Marda: By seeing the growth of state, the change of government and placement records of the college I selected this IIM. Apart from this college, I had converted all new IIMs.
Careers360: What was your strategy while preparing for CAT 2013?
Runit Marda: I preparedwith intensity for almost six months before the exam. I believe that if you start too early you lose the momentum. And my preparation strategy helped and kept everything fresh until the exam.

Careers360: How important is Coaching or Mentoring to crack CAT or other MBA entrance tests?
Runit Marda: If you are giving an aptitude exam for the first time, coaching supports you a lot. When I saw the previous papers I could easily solve them could relate to them so I didn’t require coaching. But if you can’t relate to exam you should really go for a good coaching and adapt their strategies and test sessions.
Careers360: How did you manage CAT preparation schedule along with working hours?
Runit Marda: I have started working just twenty days before the exam. Before that I was free as my college was over by June and hence got time to prepare.
Careers360: Please share your preparation strategy for the Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation and Verbal Ability& Logical Reasoning separately?
Runit Marda: For QA, my strategy was to put in more time in practicing session. I believe this helped me get a good score. For VA, I believe, focus is very important. I focused on selected questions especially Reading comprehensions and Sentence correction.

Careers360: Did you follow any Time Management formula while taking the actual CAT paper?
Runit Marda: Yes I did. I first solved the questions that were easy and which I was more comfortable with. Later, I switched to questions that might take time to answer. And this helped a lot.
Careers360: What were your strong and weak areas? How did you prepare and what special efforts did you put for improving your weak areas?
Runit Marda: Definitely my QA was strong, as I have practiced a lot. Managing VA was a bit difficult, especially RCs and SCs; I had to work hard on them.
Careers360: What is your advice for the MBA aspirants who will take CAT 2014?
Runit Marda: Find out your strengths and weaknesses and focus on your strengths first, then shift to your weaker sections and practice as much as you can. But it is also important that you do mock test while following a time strategy.
