Before appearing in any examination, getting familiar with the question pattern and time constraints is very essential. Mock tests are prepared based on the latest exam patterns and syllabus so that students can get an idea about what is coming. These tests are also very helpful to strategize the allotment of time in each section for each student as per their strengths and weaknesses. During the preparation for the XAT Exam, try to focus on the topics mentioned below. Candidates can successfully crack the XAT exam on their first attempt if they follow these tips and tricks.
The XAT Exam is held once a year and it is a computer-based exam. XAT exam consists of a total of 95 questions to be done in 3 hours. From Quantitative aptitude and Data interpretation, almost 28-30 questions come every year.
In the previous year's XAT question papers, there were a total of 28 questions in this section, out of which 12 questions were from DI and 16 were from various topics of Quant.
The topics of the Quantitative aptitude section are Number systems, probability, algebra, geometry, mensuration, and statistics. All the mathematical questions will be MCQ type with 5 options each.
The Data interpretation section involves analyzing datasets given in the form of tables, charts, or graphs format. There will be 4 sets of data interpretation sets with 3 mcq questions each.
The difficulty level of questions remains moderate to hard.
During preparation, students often question “how to prepare quantitative aptitude for xat”, and “how to prepare Data interpretation for xat”. Giving XAT mock tests for QA and DI sections has many benefits. Some of them are mentioned below.
Mock tests for the XAT exam are prepared following the XAT exam structure and syllabus. So students get familiar with the exam setting before appearing in the real exam. Without having an idea about the exam and then appearing in the real exam will cause anxiety among the students. This will affect the result. So giving continuous mock tests will give students a boost and mentally prepare them for actual tests.
After taking the mock tests, analyse your results and point out your strengths and weaknesses.
Suppose in the Quantitative aptitude section, we are weak in geometry but got good marks in the algebra part. Then invest more time in the geometry part to get as good marks as the algebra section.
Same with the DI part, find out which topic is taking most of the time. Then practice that part more and revise to get good marks.
Don’t waste too much time on the topics in which you are already strong. Focus on strengthening your weakness.
Regularly giving the mock tests will prepare you mentally to strategise about time management. Deciding which part you need to allot more time and which part you need to allot less time is necessary for time-based exams. These tests will prepare you to not rush towards the end, but rather attempt easier questions first, then deal with the difficult ones. It will also help to increase your speed and accuracy under pressure.
Complete a full-length time-based exam in one go is very difficult if you are not familiar with the previous year's question papers with the process. Mock tests give you an idea about the structure of the actual exam and which types of questions may come in that section. Completing time-based mock tests and consistently increasing the numbers in those tests will boost your confidence. It will also reduce the anxiety of the actual test day.
For the Quantitative aptitude section, you can practice various types of mathematical questions and learn from them. This will improve your conceptual understanding.
Randomly giving mock tests will lead you to nowhere. To succeed in the XAT 2025 exam, you have to strategically approach the mock tests, notably for the QA and DI sections.
Choosing the appropriate source of quality mock tests is also very important. Research and analyze the reviews on the internet and YouTube channels to choose the best site to give mock tests. For example, careers360 is a good site to give good mock tests for the XAT exam.
In general, free mock tests are good for building a basic foundation. But paid mock tests are more structured and closer to the real exam papers. The difficulty of these mock tests will also prepare you better for the actual exam. So the investment in the paid mock tests is worth every penny.
During the initial phase of the preparation, give 1-2 mock tests per week to build the idea for the exam and get comfortable with the structure. In between the mock tests, analyze your performance in the tests and work on your weaker areas to not make the same mistakes again. After the initial adjustment, for constant improvement, taking 3 to 4 mock tests per week will build the momentum for the exam. It is also advisable for the candidates to curate their own XAT time table for ensuring an enhanced XAT exam preparation.
Also, choose the best time of the day to give the mock tests as per your preference. Most of the students choose the daytime for the mock tests when they feel refreshed, rejuvenated, and energized.
After giving each mock test, analyze the results and mark your strong and weak areas. If you are making mistakes in the same chapter, then prepare that chapter urgently because that chapter needs more attention than other chapters. Also, check in which section you are taking more time compared to the other chapters. Practice those sections more to increase your speed and accuracy.
Break down your mistakes into categories like if it is conceptual error or calculation error. This will help you to rectify the root cause of your maximum errors.
If your marks are increasing gradually, then you are on the right track. Otherwise, practice more and attempt the tests.
Locating key areas and important topics will help students get comfortable with the exam settings and strengthen those areas.
Quantitative aptitude questions generally come from the chapters like Algebra, Arithmetic, Geometry, Probability, and Number systems.
Algebra questions cover polynomials, maxima-minima, linear and quadratic equations, factorization, inequalities, and progressions.
Arithmetic sections cover time & work, ratio & proportion, percentages, profit & loss, and mixtures & allegations.
From the geometry section, questions from mensuration, circles, triangles, and polygons generally come.
Number system questions consist of division rules, remainders, BODMAS rules, prime numbers and factors questions.
Give priority to mental maths for short calculations and remember the formulas. Try to approach Quantitative aptitude questions with short tricks, back-solving, options tests and eliminating options methods. This will essentially save time which you can use on other sections.
The data interpretation section of the exam covers topics like tables, various kinds of charts, and caselets.
It mostly focuses on numerical data and has to do mathematical operations like average, percentage, or ratio to find the answer.
Data presented in tabular form needs to be analyzed using techniques like percentages, averages and ratios.
The most common charts problem comes in the form of pie charts, line charts, and bar charts.
In the caselet topics, students need to analyze a short passage and answer the given questions from that passage.
This is one of the most time-consuming sections of the exam. Try to strategize proper time allocation during the mock test to ace this part. First, solve the comparatively easier ones, then move to the difficult ones. Don’t hesitate to skip ambiguous or difficult questions. Return at the end to solve them if you have time left.
During mock tests, students often make some common mistakes that they cannot identify and these will also reflect on the actual exam. We have discussed those mistakes and the possible solutions to those mistakes below.
QA and DI questions are all about understanding the question and then solving the questions. Students often start to solve the question without reading it twice and misinterpret the question. This will often waste time and cost numbers if you attempt wrong.
In the XAT exam, QA and DI questions most often come with a twist. So read the question carefully before jumping to any conclusion. If the question is big, break it into parts and then solve part by part.
In the QA questions, try to locate keywords like “maximum”, “minimum”, “at least”, and “percentage increase or decrease”. These words affect the calculations.
Always attempt the easier questions first, and leave the difficult ones for later. This will boost your confidence and you can strategize for the difficult questions with composure. During mock tests, identify the time-consuming questions and allot time for each section. If a question seems complicated or confusing, do not hesitate to skip it and come back later if time permits.
One of the most important purposes of giving mock tests is to analyse the performance and rectify mistakes in the next one so that the same mistakes do not repeat. For the first few tests, rather than the total score, understand your strength points and weak areas. Practice and revise them thoroughly, then attempt the mock tests again. Note your progression test by test to boost your confidence. If progression is not happening, identify the reason and rectify it.
Here are some important tips to focus on for QA and DI sections in the XAT exam.
To ace any type of exam, building a strong foundation during preparation is very important. Always, start from the basics, then gradually build to these basics and approach harder topics.
In the QA part, understand and remember every necessary formula and trick to solve maths problems quickly. Sharpen mental maths-solving ability. Focus on key topics like algebra, arithmetic, and geometry.
In the DI part, familiarize yourself with the charts, tables, and caselets. During mock tests, try to solve the easier questions on those parts first. Practice the methods of averages, percentages, and ratios, as often these operations are needed to solve DI questions.
Regular and strategic practice is the key to succeeding in any exam. Note the important topics that come in the exam, and allot alternate days to practice those topics. Revise consistently all the chapters to make sure you get familiar and comfortable with all the topics.
You can make separate notes about the formulas of the geometry section, geometric properties and algebraic identities. This is a good technique to remember and revise all the formulas.
Correct utilization of the study materials and resources is necessary to get prepared. Buy best books for XAT preparation which cover all the topics. Check the reviews about the online resources and then choose the correct one to read and practice.
Giving time-bound tests will simulate a real exam-type environment and you can familiarize yourself with the stress, anxiety, and hastiness. You can increase your pace and accuracy gradually by giving these tests. These tests will also improve your judgement on which questions to attempt first and which questions to leave unanswered for the time being to save time.
