IIMs utilise the donation and grant money received during the academic year for several purposes which directly or indirectly benefit the students. Some of the uses of the grant money are given below.
Donation Use | Purpose |
Scholarships | Financial assistance for economically weaker students |
Research | Funding faculty and student research projects |
Infrastructure | Building or upgrading campus facilities |
Faculty Chairs | Attracting and retaining distinguished faculty |
Student Activities | Conferences, workshops, leadership programs |
Here's the irony nobody talks about: IIMs are sitting on crores received as donations from alumni and corporates, and government grants, enough to fund entire AI schools, chairs, and scholarships. Yet MBA fees somehow keep climbing every single year.
As the IIM alumni network continues to grow globally, this funding stream is only expected to expand, translating into better infrastructure, and helps some students afford a degree that would otherwise be out of reach. To be fair, this money does help.
But it also raises an uncomfortable question: if IIMs are wealthy enough, why does the financial burden still fall so heavily on regular students paying full fees? And if fees can't be reduced, surely scholarships could at least increase? NIRF 2026 data submitted by IIM Ahmedabad shows only 19 students received full tuition fee reimbursement from institute funds, while 322 students got no full waiver at all. That’s a story for another day - but it's a number worth sitting with.
