For maximising the IIM MBA admission chances, candidates need to have the profile as per the table mentioned above according to their academic category.
Work experience is another major factor, which is not compulsory but significantly adds up to a candidate’s profile. IIMs usually give 10-15% weightage to the work experience of candidates. A candidate with a work experience of 24-36 months is usually given significant preference by IIMs for the MBA admissions. Candidates having no work experience are also preferred by IIMs but in IIMs like IIM Bangalore, work experience is given significant weightage. Also, full time position work experience in a recognised firm only is considered by IIMs.Internships, self-employment, family-business, work having cash payment are not considered in work experience by IIMs. Candidates who have excessive work experience, say more than 48 months, can opt for the 1 year executive MBA program offered by IIMs.

Extra curriculars and achievements don’t hold any weightage while calculating the final composite score. Still, they make a candidate’s profile better and give an edge to the candidates without any prior work experience or excellent academic record. Hence, candidates who don’t have their academics or work experience in line can attempt the CAT 2026 exam if they have any other significant achievements.
IIMs give 4-5% weightage to candidates with academic diversity. For example- Candidates who have a non-engineering background in CAT. Candidates who are from an engineering background don’t get any academic diversity points. Also, IIM cutoffs are comparatively high for CAT appearing engineers because of their prior knowledge in QA, giving them an edge over other candidates.
IIMs also give extra weightage to gender diversity while calculating the final composite score. Female candidates are generally given 5% extra weightage while male candidates are not.

Yes, candidates with an active backlog can also appear for CAT 2026 exam. However, before the final admission process for MBA begins, candidates will have to clear all their active backlogs. Also, the candidates will have to meet the minimum percentage criteria (50% for SC/ST/EWS and 45% for SC/ST/PwD) for being eligible to write the CAT exam 2026.
