Apart from the salary, the other factor that majorly influences the MBA aspirants when choosing a B-school is the placement percentage. And, the placement percentage that is usually mentioned in the college brochures don’t always tell the real picture. The same batch can look almost fully placed when one sees the students graduated vs placed numbers, but the picture changes when it comes to students admitted vs placed. For the 2023-25 batch, 8,937 students were admitted across all 21 IIMs - and of these, 8,765 went on to graduate, and 8,672 were eventually placed. Most IIMs report placement percentage as students graduated vs. placed as the gap widens when we compare admitted vs placed. We analysed the data submitted by 21 IIMs for NIRF ranking 2026 to understand how the numbers hold up.

The placement percentage influences the MBA admission decisions of the lakhs of students every year — people who give up their jobs, take loans, move cities, bet two years of their life on a number: if I get in, will I get a decent job at the end of it? The difference between the IIM placement percentage of graduates vs placed (98.94%) and admitted vs placed (97.03%) is minor enough to shrug off until we look at the IIMs individually. These numbers tell two different stories for the same batch. While comparing the MBA colleges, MBA aspirants shouldn’t just see how high the placement is but what it’s being measured against.
