CAT Registration Facts and Figures Over the Years
Common Admission Test or CAT has seen a tumultuous change over the years, be it in the matter of the exam pattern, mode or number of registrations. Since 2009, the good old paper pencil based CAT was bade farewell, the number of registrations reduced drastically. The number decreased even more with the following years, till last year, i.e. 2012, it rose upto 4.2%.
CAT Registrations and test takers over the years
A look at the following table will give you an idea of the past 8 years’ CAT registrations.
Year | CAT Registration Numbers | Number of Test Takers |
CAT 2005 | 1.70 lakh | 155000 |
CAT 2006 | 1.91 lakh | 180000 |
CAT 2007 | 2.50 lakh | 230000 |
CAT 2008 | 2.90 lakh | 276000 |
CAT 2009 | 2.42 lakh | 230000 |
CAT 2010 | 2.04 lakh | 185000 |
CAT 2011 | 2.05 lakh | 186000 |
CAT 2012 | 2.15 lakh | 195000 |
As you can see, since 2005, the number of registrations gradually increased. However, since 2009, the year when CAT went computer based from paper pencil based exam, the number of registrations dropped from 2.90 lakh to 2.42 lakh. CAT 2010 saw even lower number of registrations, 2.04 lakh owing to a rough start of the computer based CAT in 2009. Things started improving from the year 2011 as the functionality and pattern attained a stability over the 2 years of computer based CAT.
However, it is interesting to note that the number of actual test takers is always lower than the number of registrations. “Yes, every year there is a number of no shows on the CAT test dates. There can be several reasons while a candidate doesn’t take the test even after registering for CAT. Either they face some emergencies which stop them from taking the test or they realize that they are not prepared enough. The reasons can be diverse and personal,” said Prof. Himanshu Rai, CAT 2010 Convener, Associate Professor and Chairman, Corporate Communications & Media Relations, IIM, Lucknow.
IIM Conversion Ratio
Though lakhs of MBA aspirants take the CAT exam aiming only for the IIMs, but not all are capable enough to convert to the IIMs. The following table will give you the number of conversions at IIMs by the test takers.
Year | Number of Test Takers | Number of seats in IIMs | Conversion Ratio |
CAT 2005 | 155000 | 1200 | 129.2 |
CAT 2006 | 180000 | 1400 | 128.6 |
CAT 2007 | 230000 | 1500 | 153.3 |
CAT 2008 | 276000 | 1760 | 156.8 |
CAT 2009 | 230000 | 2260 | 101.7 |
CAT 2010 | 185000 | 2650 | 69.8 |
CAT 2011 | 186000 | 3250 | 57.2 |
CAT 2012 | 195000 | 3500 | 55.7 |
Gender Ratio of CAT takers
The unfair presence of the fairer sex at the CAT and MBA scenario has concerned the management fraternity over the years. However, the situation is improving over the years. The next table gives you the number of female CAT takers of the past 4 years since CAT has become computer based.
Year | CAT Registrations | Number of Female Candidates | Percentage |
CAT 2009 | 2.41 lakh | 56, 050 | 23.25% |
CAT 2010 | 2.04 lakh | 53, 732 | 26.33% |
CAT 2011 | 2.05 lakh | 56, 050 | 27.34% |
CAT 2012 | 2.15 lakh | 60, 876 | 28.31% |
As you can see, the percentage of female CAT takers is gradually rising over the years. This year too there are chances that the number of female candidates will increase, which we will discuss in a later article.

I have obc ncl certificate bt issued in 2017. will it valid in 2021 Cat exam or I have to update it?? pls advice me
Hey,
Sorry to say it's not valid and you need to get your reservation certificate updated. The CAT at the time of registration ask about the reservation of the students and thy are even required to submit their category certificate at the time of form submission.
If it's expired I will suggest you to get it updated from your nearest block office as soon as possible in order to avoid any kind of problem in the end or at the time of form filling.
Hope that helps.
Thank you.

How does the scores in CAT matter? Will it matter sectionalwise or overall percentile?
Hello aadish.mehata
I hope you are doing good . I would glad to aware you the about evaluation of cat marks and their involvement in scores . For getting a good percentile , first thing is you have to clear sectional cutt offs in each section . You can get a good percentile or can clear cat without clearing the sectional cut off. However, for getting a call business schools overall percentile only matters. In short they all are interelated
Hope you found this answer helpful. Good luck for your future
Which is better, getting into IIM Indore through Ipmat exam after 12th or Getting into other IIMs through CAT exam ?
Hello,
Well it's totally depends upon that whether you want go for Five years integrated programme or want to go for 2 years PGDM programme after CAT exam.
But through IPMAT you are getting a chance to study in one of the most prestigious Institutions of India, So its not a bad deal. On the other hand CAT exam is very very tough exam, It's possible that you don't receive a call even from the baby IIMs if you fail to clear the sectional Cutoff of IIMs.
Have a look at the placement record after IPMAT-
Highest CTC offered- 50 lacs
Average CTC offered- 22 lacs
Number of Recruiters- 160
Now it's totally on you.
Good Luck.
