While on first glance, XAT looks easier since it deducts fewer marks per incorrect response, it has one more thing to consider - you are penalized even for skipping answers in XAT. In CAT, it is not important at all whether you give up on the question and leave it unanswered.

Note: In CAT, TITA questions do not have negative marking.

Decision Making in XAT Has No Fixed Formula

This is the single most important reason why students find XAT tough. The XAT DM section based on the previous year, includes about 21-22 problems which involve practical office scenarios like managing an unfair employee, deciding between two high-risk decisions for a business, or resolving disputes between teams. No formula applies in DM problems, but it tests your ethics, fairness, legality, organizational interest, and long-term thinking. Often, two answers seem "almost correct" and students have to choose the one which is fair for all stakeholders and not just correct.

PYQ sample (based on previous XAT papers): A manager finds out that one of his employees has been falsifying his sales data to reach his targets. Now he has to decide whether to report the matter, warn him quietly, or ignore it. Students often select the safe answer, but XAT prefers the answer that maintains honesty foremost while having some consideration for the employee.

CAT primarily rewards analytical ability, speed, and accuracy, whereas XAT additionally evaluates ethical judgement and decision-making. XAT's DM tests your judgment – an ability which very few students develop during preparation for Quant and Logic.

What to do?: Solve at least 15-20 past XAT DM sets before taking your first mock test. The more sets you solve, the more you begin realizing that the same 4-5 situations keep appearing.

XAT General Knowledge Penalizes Students Who Study Only Quant & Verbal

CAT has no GK section. XAT has 20-25 GK questions, with some of them being Static GK questions and others Current Affairs based. The GK questions need to be solved within 10 minutes in the XAT exam.

Students who are preparing only for CAT don't touch GK through their entire preparation journey since they are not required to. But when XAT comes closer, it becomes a last-minute task to recall months of GK.

It is important to note here that, XAT part 2, GK sections does not have a negative marking so you candidates should attempt all 20 questions.

What to do?: Start reading GK for 10 minutes a day at least 3 months prior to the exam. GK marks do not affect your XAT percentile, but they are directly important for XLRI Interview and final merit list, so don’t skip this section entirely.

CAT's Marking Scheme Penalizes Guesswork and Unanswered Questions

CAT exam pattern has a straightforward marking policy - wrong answer means deduction of a third of a mark. XAT exam pattern makes it even tougher.

Therefore, unlike in CAT, where the strategy of some top scorers is being 'too careful', the XAT students cannot afford to be too cautious. In addition, leaving some questions unanswered is going to lower your marks hence, you must think about the number of questions to attempt.

The Verbal Section Becomes Truly Tougher in the XAT

The RC passages in CAT are lengthy but recognizable, belonging to the realms of business or social issues. XAT VALR even throws in a passage in the form of a poem, apart from difficult vocabulary and grammar questions. XAT occasionally includes image-based or picture-based verbal reasoning questions.

Those students who had prepared only CAT-type passages feel confused when faced with a question from a poem for the first time in their XAT mocks.

Solution: Include 3-4 poems or literature passages in your practice every week for the last month before the exam.

Unlimited Time For Each Section in the XAT Seems Convenient — It Is Not?

The CAT exam forces the candidate to do each of the sections sequentially. On the other hand, in the XAT exam, the candidate is free to go back and forth between VALR, DM, and QA-DI sections in Part 1, in 170 minutes. For part 2 in the XAT exam, separate 10 minutes are allotted. At first glance, this seems to be an easy way out, but in reality, it causes another problem – bad time management. Due to a lack of any time restriction, the candidates often waste time on the section they like best, Quant.

The exam is not tougher due to having additional topics; it is difficult due to testing two new abilities, i.e., judgment-based decisions and general knowledge memory, which have never been tested in CAT, along with a strict marking policy.

If you are taking both these exams, then don't think that XAT is nothing but CAT with a bit of extra effort. Allocate specific time slots for Decision Making and GK from at least 8-10 weeks before the exam.

Those students who excel in areas like reading, ethical reasoning, and decision making would benefit from taking the XAT test, whereas those who are fast and accurate would perform better in CAT.
