The three letters-IIM-have long been synonymous with premium IIM placements, lucrative IIM salary packages and unmatched career opportunities. However, the latest IIM placement data suggests that the IIM tag alone may no longer guarantee high salary packages, especially among the newer or Baby IIMs. The latest Baby IIM placement data raises some uncomfortable questions. While the BLACKI IIM median salary rose round 3.67% , most of the Baby IIMs moved in the opposite direction. According to the placement data for the 2023-25 MBA batch, the average Baby IIM median salary declined by 6.57% compared to the 2021-23 and 2022-24 batches. While premier IIMs (BLACKI) recorded a 3.76% increase in median salary, six out of the nine Baby IIMs reported lower median salaries. The sharpest declines were witnessed by IIM Bodh Gaya (-21.81%), IIM Amritsar (-19.07%), and IIM Kashipur (-15.93%).

For years, the IIM tag has been viewed as a near-guaranteed pathway to a high-paying career. But the latest placement numbers from the Baby IIMs suggest that the equation is becoming more complex. If six out of nine newer IIMs are witnessing a decline in median salaries despite charging Rs. 15–20 lakh for an MBA, aspirants need to ask a difficult question: Is getting into any IIM enough, or does the top ones matter more than ever? For students investing two years, significant fees, and an opportunity cost, the real decision may no longer be “IIM vs non-IIM” but “which IIM offers the best placement quality, recruiter mix, alumni network, and ROI?” The Baby IIMs still offer valuable opportunities, but the data is a reminder that an MBA should be evaluated not just as a degree, but as a long-term career investment.
