In the latest update from the IIM admission scenario, there has been important development which might witness a significant shift in the IIM admission process. As per the media reports, 22 IIMs have been urged by the Union Ministry of Education to unify their IIM admission Process and create a common counselling system like it happens for IITs in India. In the current scenario, though IIMs have a common admission test, CAT, as a prerequisite to get into their 2 year MBA courses, management aspirants have to appear for the different counselling process to secure an IIM admission. In this article below we look at the present IIM admission scenario, what has been proposed by the Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, what are the possible advantages and disadvantages of the new proposed ideas and what is the basic difference between the IIM admission and the IIT admission.

At present the 22 IIMs in India intake students via several IIM admission processes. First and foremost for IIM admission candidates have to appear for the CAT (Common admission Test) for the 2 years MBA courses. Once they match the different IIM CAT Cutoff, varying based on IIMs and category of the candidates, they become eligible for the IIM Counselling process. While IIM BLACKI admission is dependent on the individual IIM counselling process, there are several joint admission processes such as JAP or CAP where several IIMs come together to conduct their counselling.
Now for all of the 4 IIM admission processes (Individual admission process, CAP, JAP, SAP) only matching the cutoff does not guarantee students IIM admission. The eligible candidates have to go through the IIM GD-PI round. And the final IIM admission is based on the composite score after the GD-PI rounds.

Apart from the 2 Years MBA, IIMs also have three separate entrance admission tests for the IIM after 12 or undergraduate courses. Students who want to study management courses after their class 12 examination can get into these 5 years integrated courses at IIMs after appearing for the following exams

As per the media reports, there have been 3 three major agendas that have been discussed in the IIM Coordination meeting with Chairpersons of IIM Boards of Governors by the Union Education Ministry.
In the meeting the points were made to streamline the post-CAT admission process around the lines of IITs’ unified system after JEE scores rather than existing different IIM admission process, as “it is creating confusion and chaos” for the management aspirants. Moreover though for the postgraduate programmes there has been one single entrance test, for the graduate programs there are different exams as mentioned before. So the suggestions were made to reduce the number of these tests for the benefits of the students if IIMs want to bring the changes from the next academic year.
Apart from the IIM admission Test, the discussion also highlighted the uniform IIT like Counselling process. Former UGC official highlighted that in earlier times IITS used to have their separate IIT wise admission process but for the benefit of the student and simplify the admission process they now have a single uniform IIT admission Process. The ministry also asked the IIMs to work in tandem with each other and come up with the single , uniform IIM admission/counselling process .
The last major point that the meeting focused on was about the refund of the confirmation fees. If one candidate opts for the different IIMs after being selected in one IIM, the IIMs must make a full refund deducting only Rs. 1000/.

Now if one looks at the proposals given by the Union Ministry of Education for the IIM admission from next session it highlights the uniformity of both entrance examination as well as the counselling process. Full swift refund of the IIM confirmation fees upon changing the IIMs is the only benefit of the proposed plans, as that would reduce the financial burden upon the management aspirants. Moreover, one single uniform IIM admission/counselling means that the students don't have to wait for a month for all IIM results to come out . Neither they have to face the IIM result hiatus like it happened for IIM Mumbai this year. IIM Mumbai result 2026 was the last IIMs to declare their result and students were frustrated due to the IIM Mumbai 2026 result delay. However there are several disadvantages of the proposed plan-
While the single admission test might put less preparation pressure on the management aspirants but at the same time it also means that the students have the only chance to perform well. If they don't perform well on the specific day they have to wait for another year. While in case of MBA entrance test , IIM has one singular test, CAT for the postgraduate courses and three management entrance exams - IPMAT Indore and IPMAT Rohtak and JIPMAT for the undergraduate courses. So the IIM after 12 aspirants get three different chances to get into undergraduate IIM courses.
Just like the multiple exams means multiple opportunities for the management aspirants to get into the IIMs , the different counselling process also provides students various opportunities to perform well in the interview rounds. In the current IIM admission scenario one candidate can get 18 IIM Interview calls (Individual Counselling of 15 IIMs+ CAP+JAP+SAP) at most, (assuming that they clear the cutoff for all 22 IIMs). Uniform counselling process would cut that opportunity to only 1. So rather than benefiting the students uniform IIM counselling process would reduce the chances for students to get into MBA admissions in IIM.
MBA admission in IIM does not only depend on the CAT Cutoff. Different IIMs have not only different cutoffs but different criteria for both the rounds - shortlisting for the IIM GD PI rounds and the IIM Final Selection rounds. Different IIMs have different weightage for CAT score, WAT/GD/PI round or even work experience for IIMs. This difference makes IIMs unique and getting into IIMs challenging. Uniform IIM admission process would kill this individuality of the IIMs.
It's not like there is no uniform IIM admission process within the existing IIM admission system. There is CAP, JAP, and SAP which are conducted for 7 IIMs. In IIM admission 2025 , there were 8 IIMs participating in IIM CAP admission. However in recent times , i.e in IIM admission 2026 it came down to 3. This year 4 IIMs created their own joint IIM admission process while IIM Udaipur, IIM Sambalpur conducted their individual admission process. These IIMs highlighted several reasons for leaving common admission process like Quality of the Students, high standards, Better Control over PI-WAT round, Course Specific Criteria
While in the meeting it was told repeatedly to hold a uniform counselling process just like the IITs does, there has been a fundamental difference between the IIM admission and the IIT admission. In the case of engineering, candidates give JEE and based on their JEE marks candidates are admitted to IITs via a singular admission counselling process.
However in case of MBA admission in IIMs , candidates are not selected solely based on the CAT Cutoffs. Moreover there are different stages of IIM admission.
First candidates need to appear for the CAT.
Then if they match the minimum IIM Cutoff they will be eligible to be considered for the IIM GD-PI rounds.
The IIM GD-PI shortlist is made upon criterias like CAT Score, Past academic experience, work experience, gender diversity etc. Different IIMs put different selection weightage for all these factors. For example IIM Calcutta gives 56% weightage to CAT score while IIM Bangalore 2026 admission criteria gives 55% weightage to CAT score in the first round.
Once the candidates are selected for the personal interview rounds, the final IIM Admission offers are made based on the CAT Score, PI Score, Gender and Academic diversity work experience etc. Like the earlier stages there are differences in the IIM selection criteria weightage in each of the IIMs. As per the IIM Calcutta 2026 selection criteria 48% weightage is given to personal Interview while in case of IIM Bangalore that is only 40% of the final score.
Conclusion
The existing IIM Admission process provides not only the multiple opportunity to the students to get into the IIMs but at the same time highlights the unique features of the IIMs. Through their diversified complex admission process IIMs try to have a wider representation in the batch. For example, despite the lower participation of the women in IIMs, IIM Vizag PGP batch has 50% women representation. The difference in the selection criteria makes the IIM Admissions unique in its nature. Similarly IIM Sambalpur witnessed a sharp rise of non engineers in MBA programmes. The proposed proposals try to kill that in the name of uniformity.

Hi Dear student,
With a 60k rank, getting Category 1 at VIT is probably difficult, but you still have a decent chance of getting branches like ECE, EEE, or related courses in higher categories (Category 2–5) or at VIT Chennai, AP, or Bhopal campuses.
You can first try for CSE
Hi,
With a VITMEE rank around 575, getting VLSI at VIT Vellore in Category 1 can be a bit competitive, but there is still a possibility depending on counselling trends and seat availability. Category 2 chances are generally much better at this rank.
You may also have a good chance
For Cat-1 with 10-year Kannada medium quota, you should aim for around 350–450+ marks in NEET for safer chances in government colleges. Cutoff can change each year, but higher marks always improve your chances of getting a good seat.
