Here are the 3 routes a candidate can take depending on their education level, experience, and future goals.
Rather than following the traditional route of doing an undergraduate degree then going for an MBA, candidates can directly choose the 5-year integrated program offered by many IIMs. The IPM course is designed to provide students with a combined course offering of BBA + MBA. This route is ideal for students who are certain about pursuing management education early in their academic journey. Candidates aspiring to get into IIM after 12 will have to appear for JIPMAT/IIM Indore/IIM Rohtak.
The IIMs' 2-year flagship graduation program resulting in an MBA degree is the most sought-after by candidates. The 2-year MBA/PGP flagship program at IIMs allows both fresher and experienced candidates to study at IIM alongside each other. For the 2-year MBA program, candidates have to appear for the CAT exam, followed by a personal interview and/or WAT round. Admission to the 2-year MBA/PGP program at IIM is highly competitive.

MBA for working professionals, commonly known as Executive MBA or EPGP, is suitable for people with several years of working experience. Executive programs at IIM usually require around 4 or more years of experience. The executive programs are offered in a 1-year academic program, 2-year, and/or blended mode, as well, depending on the IIMs. GMAT, GRE, and CAT are a few acceptable exams for the executive programs.
IIM MBA 2027 admission eligibility criteria depend on the programme the candidate wishes to apply for. Candidates applying for the flagship two-year MBA/PGP programmes generally need a recognised bachelor's degree and must meet the prescribed academic and entrance-exam requirements.
However, for IPM and executive MBA programs, the minimum eligibility criteria can be different. Also, each IIM may have different eligibility weightages or factors; candidates should check the IIM 2027 admission policy for each IIM separately before applying.
Here is a generalised IIM admission process for admission to a 2-year MBA program. While each IIM has its own criteria and weightages, the overall admission journey is broadly similar across institutes.
First and foremost, check the eligibility criteria. Candidates must have a bachelor's degree from a recognized university with at least 50% marks.
Register and appear for the CAT exam accepted by IIMs for the 2-year MBA/PGP program.
Once the CAT results are out, each IIM will release its own cutoff criteria.
Candidates who meet the said cutoff for both sectional and overall will be shortlisted for the personal interview round at IIM. IIMs will also consider past academic marks, work experience, and diversity factors.
Shortlisted candidates will appear for the Personal Interview round at IIM.
Candidates will be scrutinized on multiple aspects during the interview. Several IIMs will also conduct WAT (Written Ability Test).
Once the IIMs have conducted the PI and WAT rounds, they will release the final merit list offering admission to the selected candidates.
Candidates who are selected will be informed via email regarding the admission offer and the admission fee to be paid by them within the stipulated time.
The 2-year MBA/PGP program is the most common pathway for candidates who have completed their graduation or are in their last year of graduation. To get admission into IIM for the 2-year PGP/MBA, candidates can take part in the individual admissions process conducted by most IIMs or via the CAP. JAP, and SAP. The CAP, JAP, and SAP admission processes for IIMs are mentioned below for candidates.
CAP- The IIM Common Admission Process (CAP) is a centralized admission process used by several newer IIMs after CAT. Instead of attending separate interviews for each participating IIM, candidates go through one common Personal Interview (PI), and the interview scores are shared with all participating institutes. Each IIM then prepares its own final merit list using CAT scores, PI performance, academics, work experience, and diversity factors. CAP participants for the MBA 2027 admissions are IIM Bodh Gaya, IIM Jammu, and IIM Sirmaur, as in the previous year.
JAP- The Joint Admission Process (JAP) is a collaborative admission process adopted by IIM Ranchi, IIM Trichy, IIM Kashipur, and IIM Raipur to conduct a common interview and evaluation process to select candidates for the MBA admissions. After the personal interview and admission process, each participating IIM independently prepares its final admission list based on its own criteria.
SAP- SAP refers to the Supplementary Admission Process at IIMs. SAP is an additional admission process conducted by a couple of IIMs (IIM Jammu & IIM Bodh Gaya) for candidates who are not shortlisted through CAP but meet the institute's specific eligibility requirements. It provides another opportunity to participate in interviews and be considered for admission to the respective IIM.
