Careers360: How was your performance in CAT? Also share your overall WAT experience?
Udit: I secured a 98.8 percentile in the CAT 2013. My focus was to crack CAT and my entire preparation was aimed in the same direction. As soon as the CAT exam was over, I shifted my focus on the preparations of GD-PI-WAT, as it is very important to not to waste time. My WAT experience was good, though the topic was not at all what I expected, but WAT is a unique write up which requires different strategy and technique to be followed.
Careers360: What was your topic for WAT and the Time limit?
Udit: My WAT topic in the admission process of SPJIMR was ‘How would you explain Facebook to your grand mom’. This is a unique topic and kind of something you can not expect. But it is mandatory to prepare yourself to be surprised, as the admission committee of B-schools can ask you to express yourself on just anything and everything. It is mandatory to prepare yourself with variety of topics. The time limit to finish my WAT was 30 minutes.
Careers360: What was your approach and time strategy towards WAT ?
Udit: My approach towards WAT was very straight and sharp. Read the topic, collect thoughts, jot points and write. So, at the time of my actual WAT, I had a structure to my essay, which was possible because of my right approach that I followed towards WAT. This also ensures that I do not stick to just one point while writing rather cover a variety of points. The time strategy is to spend 10-20% of allotted time to gather thoughts & jot down the points, around 70 % of the time for writing the essay and rest 10-15% of the time in concluding the same.
Careers360: Was the topic tough for you to write? Please share the difficulty while outlining the structure for the essay and how you tackled the problem?
Udit: Well, I was actually comfortable with the topic as it was more conversational and didn’t required facts and figures. I had heard the previous batch had got a topic on the budget for which adequate amount of preparation is required. But I had to be careful of not making it to colloquial and to not drag the same points again but to bring some insights and freshness.

Careers360: How is the interview process at SPJIMR structured?
Udit: At SPJIMR the personal interview process is quite different and unique. We have something which is an amalgamation of both GD and PI. We have two Group Interviews with each panel compromising of 2 panelists. There are instances of role playing during interviews which makes the process very different from other B-schools. The first Group Interview essentially revolves around the reasons of why we have opted for this particular specialization. For the first round, I spoke about my work experience I had and other activities I had done in college which complimented my choice of specialization.
Later, there were a few questions about my role in the company. I was the only candidate selected from the GI-1 process from a group of 7 people. The second group interview essentially revolved around your personality. A lot of it was based on the psychometric tests that we had filled. Basically the panelists were trying to gauge what sort of personality one had and how would one react in different situations.
Careers360: What were the key factors which you think influenced your selection at PI stage?
Udit: It is important that the responses are given in a structured way which showcases the clarity of thought and I was able to accomplish this. Also, the PI essentially revolves around your accomplishments and what have been your experiences so it is important to have your life story chalked out as that gives clarity to the interviewer as to why you are the right candidate for that B-school and the specialization opted.
Careers360: What is your advice to aspirants for Personal Interview?
Udit: It is very important to stay calm. Also, you need to understand that the interviewer wants to see the best in you and are not there to interrogate you. Thus if the interview progresses as a conversation then it works as your advantage. Also, it is important to do a certain amount of research on the B-school you are applying to.
Careers360: Since SP Jain conducts Group Interview, what is your take on the unique format?
Udit: SPJIMR’s unique concept of inculcating Group Discussion and Personal Interview is an advantage. It is a fresh approach compared to other B-schools. But one must not get confuse and leave preparations for GD, it is still a part of it in a different way, and a candidate must prepare for the same.
