CAT 2026 Programme Preferences Explained: Should You Select All IIMs and Does Preference Order Matter?

What is CAT 2026 programme preference?

Many IIMs offer specialised programmes such as Business Analytics, Digital Business, Healthcare Management, Sustainability Management, Food and Agribusiness Management, and more, apart from the flagship programmes. Candidates who wish to apply for any of these programmes must select these programmes individually in the CAT 2026 form, based on their preference.

Why Does CAT Ask for Programme Preferences?

The CAT 2026 programme preference is given in the CAT application form merely to identify the interest of the candidates in the different programmes offered by IIMs.

    • If a candidate does not select a particular programme during registration, the respective institute may not consider the candidate for that programme during admissions.

For instance, if a candidate selected the IIM Bangalore Flagship PGP program but not the but skips the MBA in Business Analytics & AI, then the candidate will only be considered for the flagship programme.
So even if the candidate was interested in MBA - Business Analytics & AI at IIM Bangalore, they might not be considered because they did not specify their interest in the CAT 2026 programme preference.

Can You Select All IIMs in CAT 2026?

While filling the CAT 2026 registration form, MBA aspirants wonder if they can select all IIMs. The answer to the question is yes. Candidates can select all IIMs while filling out the CAT 2026 programme preferences. There is no restriction or number limit on how many programme preferences can be selected by candidates.

Does the Order of CAT 2026 Programme Preferences Matter?

This is one of the most asked questions among the MBA aspirants filling up the CAT 2026 application form. The answer is no; the order of the CAT 2026 programme preferences does not matter. Every IIM conducts its admission process independently after CAT results are declared.

How Does IIM CAT Admission Work?

    • Downloads the CAT applicant database.

    • Applies its own eligibility criteria.

    • Calculates composite scores using CAT percentile, academic profile, work experience, diversity, and other parameters.

    • Releases interview shortlists independently.

    • Prepares its own final merit list.

Common Mistakes to Avoid While Filling CAT 2026 Programme Preferences

The CAT 2026 registration started on August 03, 2026; candidates can now fill out the CAT 2026 application form at the official website. Here are some mistakes candidates must avoid while filling out the CAT 2026 programme preference.

    • Each IIM independently shortlists candidates based on its admission policy. So the order of CAT 2026 programme preferences generally does not influence interview calls or final selection.

    • Before selecting a programme, MBA aspirants must carefully read the eligibility conditions mentioned by the respective IIM. As not all candidates may be eligible for each programme offered by IIMs, some courses have specific eligibility criteria.

    • Submitting the CAT application form without thoroughly reviewing. Before clicking the final submit button, review all selected IIMs, MBA programmes, personal details, and uploaded documents to avoid mistakes that could affect your application.

    • Skipping Newer IIMs, thinking they will secure admission to older institutes. Keep your options open by selecting as many colleges as possible and increase your chances.
