CAT 2026: 35, 40 or 50 Attempts? Historical Data Reveals the Ideal Strategy

CAT 2026: 35, 40 or 50 Attempts? Historical Data Reveals the Ideal Strategy

Hitesh SahuUpdated on 15 Jul 2026, 03:11 PM IST

Candidates targeting a 95 percentile in CAT 2026 should aim for around 35-40 quality attempts, while those targeting 99 percentile should focus on 45-50 high-accuracy attempts, according to Careers360's analysis of CAT 2021-2024 score trends. These are preparation benchmarks, not official CAT 2026 targets, because CAT percentiles are worked out after score normalisation and that shifts year to year.

Why Should You Target a 95, 98 or 99 Percentile?

Your CAT percentile target should be based on the B-schools you want to join. The recent CAT 2025 admission rules suggest that top IIMs are still holding on to strong overall plus sectional cut-offs for the very first stage of shortlisting, almost automatically.

CAT 2025 Admission Trends: Why Every Mark Counts

The revised CAT 2025 admission criteria say that some of the best IIMs have kept or even pushed up their qualifying thresholds, so the competition for interview shortlisting is even more selective, in a way that shows it is harder to get in. For instance, IIM Ahmedabad increased its General category overall CAT cut-off from 80 percentile to 95 percentile, with the sectional cut-off rising from 70 to 85 percentile. Similar increases were announced for NC-OBC, SC and ST categories as well.

These changes mean that candidates targeting the top IIMs can no longer rely on clearing only the minimum eligibility percentile.

CAT 2026 Attempt Strategy for 95, 98 and 99 Percentile

Historical CAT analysis suggests that there is no single attempt target for a particular percentile. The required score depends on paper difficulty, score normalisation and accuracy. Instead of chasing maximum attempts, aspirants should focus on achieving the required net score for their target percentile.

Section-wise Attempt Strategy for CAT 2026

Instead of fixing an overall attempt target, divide your strategy section-wise. Below is a brief section-wise strategy:

    VARC

Try the reading comprehension passages in the order that feels easiest. Don’t spend too much time on a very tough one just because it looks easy or time-consuming.

    QA

Start with the direct questions first. If the longer calculations at the beginning look difficult, you can skip them at first and attempt them later if time is left.

    DILR

First, go through every set once, then pick only the sets where the solving approach seems clear and straightforward, leave the rest of the questions and do them later.

These moves should help raise your total net score without adding extra unnecessary risk.

    CAT 2026 Attempt Strategy

178410824361795 vs 98 vs 99 Percentile: Which Should You Target?

    Target

    Best Suited For

    95 Percentile

For aspirants who are aiming at IIM Ahmedabad’s qualifying boundary, the newer IIMs, IITs, and a few other top MBA schools, but only as per each institute’s own admission rules.

    98 Percentile

For candidates who want a better shot at getting shortlisted for the interview round at multiple top MBA institutes.

    99 Percentile

For aspirants going after the extremely competitive segments, where a more powerful CAT score can make the profile more competitive before academics, job experience, and PI are taken into account.

Which CAT 2026 Percentile Should You Target Based on Your Dream IIM?

The latest CAT 2025 admission criteria suggest that each IIM might set their own overall as well as sectional qualifying percentiles for the very first stage of MBA admissions. So if you aim to join one of the top IIMs, then your CAT 2026 percentile target should really match the institute's eligibility criteria, not some random number you picked.

    1784108243662

From those official eligibility guidelines, aspirants for IIM Ahmedabad should really plan on at least a 95 percentile. On the other hand, those targeting IIM Lucknow or IIM Indore can keep 90 percentile or higher as the working target. Likewise, an 85th percentile is treated as the minimum qualifying requirement for institutes -IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, IIM Kozhikode, and IIM Mumbai in the first stage.

But just clearing these cut-offs isn’t a full guarantee for getting an interview call, because final shortlisting also looks at things -your academics, work experience, plus institute-specific admission parameters.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: How many questions should I attempt for a 95 percentile in CAT 2026?
    A:

There’s no official number of attempts you must make. In general, old CAT patterns say you should aim to reach the required net score with high accuracy rather than do everything you can.

Q: How many net questions are needed for a 99 percentile in CAT?
    A:

From the CAT 2021-2024 trends, the folks around the 99th percentile normally ended up with something like 26-33 net questions, depending on how rough that particular year was.

Q: Is a 95 percentile enough for IIM Ahmedabad?
    A:

The 95th percentile is the minimum qualifying requirement for the General category in the first stage, but it doesn’t mean you will definitely get an interview call or a final seat.

Q: Is accuracy more important than attempts in CAT?
    A:

Yes. The historical CAT analysis shows that the same target score can come from very different attempt styles plus accuracy levels, so accuracy matters just as much, maybe even more.

Q: What is a good CAT percentile for top IIMs?
    A:

For CAT 2025 admissions, the minimum qualifying overall percentile for the General category was 95 for IIM Ahmedabad, 90 for IIM Lucknow and IIM Indore, and 85 for IIM Bangalore, Calcutta, Kozhikode, and IIM Mumbai.
