Careers360: Why you opted for MBA? What was the aspiration that made you join this Institute?
Varun: My objective behind pursuing MBA is to gain experiential learning and to eventually work in a field of my interest and expertise. Few years at work made me feel that an MBA is a necessity to gain access to diverse opportunities in the corporate world. Hence, I joined this course.
I joined IIM Rohtak as it was my first convert of the season. I always wanted to be a part IIM fraternity and hence I decided to opt for IIM Rohtak instead of IIT Bombay or other new IIM’s, which made final admission offers.
Careers360: Apart from CAT 2013, which other MBA entrance exams you took and how was your performance?
Varun: Apart from CAT, I appeared for XAT in which I scored 99.54 percentile. According to my preparation and the percentile secured, my performance was above satisfactory. But the brand IIM attracted me, so I opted for admission through CAT.
Careers360: What was your preparation strategy for CAT 2013?
Varun: This was my second attempt for CAT, and in both the attempts I sustained high percentiles. I didn’t require much preparation this time as I just had to revise the questions. For CAT 2013, I thoroughly revised all my concepts, practiced lots of questions and regularly followed newspaper to bell the exam. I also focused on Mock Tests and last year questions.
Careers360: How important is Coaching or Mentoring to crack CAT or other MBA entrance tests?
Varun: I personally think that the mock tests conducted by coaching institutes are of more importance than classroom coaching they provide. Self-study is of utmost importance. A mentor guides you through out your preparation, motivates you and suggests you to follow a pattern or strategy to tackle the exam, which is also important.

Careers360: Please share your preparation strategy for the Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation and Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning separately?
Varun: I subscribed to the practice material of a coaching institute and completed it till the end. I practiced as many questions as I could. For verbal ability, I followed “The Hindu” on daily basis. I used to read the paper, mark difficult words, and learn their meanings. For Quants, practice is the key. I practiced Quant questions along with time, which is important to maintain a pace.
Careers360: What was your Time Management formula while taking the actual CAT paper?
Varun: I started my CAT exam with my areas of strength. Solving a few early questions gave me a confidence boost during the exam and helped me sail through it. The point is not to get stuck to a single question, give a minute each to one question and proceed accordingly.
Careers360: What were your strong and weak areas? How did you prepare and what special efforts did you put for improving your weak areas?
Varun: Quant is my strong area. My strategy in CAT was to maximize my percentile in Quant and gain good percentile in Verbal section. The sole purpose was to clear sectional cutoffs required without compromising in overall percentile.
Careers360: What is your advice for the MBA aspirants who will take CAT 2014?
Varun: Practice hard and give your best, never get nervous. Remember, it is just another exam. You have cleared several in your life!!
Careers360: How did you divide your timings between preparation and recreational activities? What were the activities that you did besides preparing for the exam?
Varun: I am an ardent online gamer and devote 2-3 hours daily to the same. The key to succeed in CAT is not in quitting recreational activities and keep reading the books but it is about doing stuff with full focus and dedication. This applies to studies as well.

see you should be very careful while applying for any exam or form filling. however you may still get the admit card and participate in the exam. but at the time of document verification you have to face questions about the wrong dob. later it would be solely depends on the exam authority whether they would accept the application or not.

can a ews category student apply for private medical college? and is the fees same for gen cat. and ews cat. student for private medical college?
The EWS category is an official reservation category that needs to be considered for admission into every college. So college consider EWS category also as other category. You can surely apply for private medical College.
Most of the colleges doesn't have fees as per the reservation. The fees seems to be same for every student. There might be some college that may offer scholarship to reserved category students .
Hope that helps.
