CAT 2017 Analysis – Moderate level of Difficulty


The overall difficulty level of CAT can be termed as moderate. According to Arks Srinivas, CEO, VistaMind, the Quantitative Ability section was the easiest, followed by Verbal and Reading Comprehension. Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning section was the toughest. “Overall the section was very similar to that of last year. DI & LR continues to be tough with a lot of reasoning based DI and LR.”

CAT 2017 Analysis – Verbal and Reading Comprehension


This section had 34 questions, divided between Reading Comprehension and Verbal Ability or English Usage. The difficulty level of slot 1 was of moderate level. As many as five Reading Comprehension passages were there carrying 24 questions. Rest of the questions were on topics like Para Jumbles, Odd Sentence Out, Summary etc. There were seven MCQs and three non-MCQs in the Verbal Ability area. "Para Summary came as MCQ unlike last year," mentions Srinivas.


VARC Slot 1 & 2 Analysis

  • Overall difficulty level- Easy to moderate 

CAT 2017 Analysis – Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning


This section carries lowest weightage among the three sections, but this was the toughest section in the exam. Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning sections carry 16 questions each. Tables, Bar Graph and Charts, Line Graph consisted majority of Data Interpretation questions. Logical Reasoning questions were mainly set based on topics like arrangement, blood relations etc. "There were eight sets which were not direct at all and were time-consuming as well," states Srinivas. The sets were mostly reasoning based. The cutoff for this section is expected to go down owing to high level of difficulty.  


DI & LR Slot 1 and 2 Analysis

  • Total number of questions- 32

  • Total number of MCQ's- 24

  • Total number of Non-MCQ's- 8

  • Overall difficulty level- Difficult

CAT 2017 Analysis – Quantitative Ability


The difficulty level of this section was easiest. The main topics or areas which are covered under this section were Arithmetic, Algebra, Numbers, Geometry, Mensuration, Pure Math and Venn diagram. According to Srinivas, the majority of the questions were from Arithmetic. The topics included Ratio & Proportion, Profit & Loss, Percentage, Number, Progression, Numbers and Logs. Animesh, a CAT 2017 slot 1 candidate says, "The questions were very easy, which was beyond my expectation. The question types were direct and were not time consuming at all."
