IIM Guwahati 22nd IIM of India: Key Highlights

• 22nd IIM : IIM Guwahati is 1st IIM from Assam , 2nd from North East after IIM Shillong , 22nd IIM of India.

• Institute of Importance: IIM Guwahati is set to become an Institute of Importance through the Indian Institute of Management (Amendment) Bill 2025.

• IIM Guwahati Funding: IIM Guwahati will receive Rs. 555 crore from 2025-2026 till 2029-2030.

• IIM Act, 2017: Through the Indian Institute of Management Act, 2017, all IIMs are granted the status of Institutions of National Importance, and they function as a full-fledged university.

• IIM Guwahati Functioning: It is expected that IIM Guwahati will commence its MBA admission process from the 2025-2026 session.

IIM Guwahati 22nd IIM: What the Indian Prime Minister Said?

On the occasion of the establishment of the 22nd IIM of India, IIM Guwahati, the Indian Prime Minister congratulated the people of Assam on X. He said, “Congratulations to the people of Assam! Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, while highlighting the GOI's efforts to expand IIMs across the country, said that the strength of IIM students has nearly tripled from 3500 to 9800 in 2024-2025. Pradhan said, “The number of IIMs set up under the Modi government in 11 years will rise to 9.” He also assured that IIM Guwahati will start functioning from this academic session.

IIM Guwahati 2025 Baby IIM? IIM over the Years (1961-2025)

After the creation of the IIM Calcutta and IIM Ahmedabad, as the oldest IIMs in 1961, the Indian Institute of Management, as the top management institution of India, has been created over the years. From 1961 to 2011, in the first 50 years,14 IIMs were created. On the other hand, with the creation of IIM Guwahati in 2015, 8 IIMs have been set up so far since 2011.

IIM Guwahati Eligibility Criteria 2025

IIM Guwahati has not announced any IIM Guwahati eligibility criteria for their management programme 2025. However, being one of the 22nd IIMs of India, one can expect that IIM Guwahati eligibility criteria 2025 would be similar to the other IIMs.

1. Education Qualification: Any candidate wanting to get IIM Guwahati admission needs to have a minimum of 3 3-year of graduation degree from a recognised university.

2. Minimum Graduation Marks: As per the IIM Guwahati eligibility criteria, the general candidates need to have a minimum of 50 % graduation marks, while SC/ST candidates need to have 45%

3. Exams Accepted: It is expected that, being an IIM, IIM Guwahati would conduct IIM Guwahati admission 2025 through CAT 2025 scores.

IIM Guwahati 2025 Admission Criteria

IIM Guwahati has not announced the official IIM Guwahati admission criteria 2025. However, as IIM Guwahati is the newest inclusion in the list of IIMs in India, one can expect that IIM Guwahati admission criteria 2026 would be similar to the other IIM admission processes 2026

1. Minimum CAT Cutoff: Management Aspirants will be able to apply for IIM Guwahati if only they match the minimum CAT cutoff for IIM Guwahati 2025

2. Pre-PI Short List: IIM Guwahati will conduct an IIM Guwahati Pre-PI shortlist 2025 based on the CAT 2025 cutoff, IIM Academic score for class 10 .12 and graduation, work experience and gender diversity.

3. IIM Guwahati PI-WAT Round: The candidates selected for the IIM Guwahati PI-WAT round will have to appear for the Personal interview round as a part of the IIM Guwahati selection process.

4. IIM Guwahati Final Result 2026: Based on the overall performance of the candidates in the I-WAT round, another set of lists will be prepared based on PI-WAT score, CAT 2025 score, CAT Work experience 2025 and gender diversity.

IIM Guwahati to start an MBA Flagship program this year. Really?

In the Parliament, Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that IIM Guwahati will start functioning from the current academic session 2025-2026. Now, one might ask if the IIM Guwahati admission 2026 is really feasible or not.

CAT 2025 registration is ongoing from August 01, 2025. The last date for CAT 2025 registration is September 2025, while CAT 2025 is scheduled for November 30.

Once the CAT 2025 result gets published, all the IIMs start their IIM admission process 2026 by January 2026. Apart from the individual IIMs conducting their IIM selection process 2026, IIM CAP 2026 is expected to start by the 2nd/3rd week of January 2026.

So within these 5 months, IIM Guwahati has to appoint professors, decide the IIM Guwahati MBA courses, decide whether they want to be a part of IIM CAP 2026 like other Baby IIMs and publish the IIM Guwahati Admission policy 2026-2028. This looks like a humongous task.
