Excerpts of the interview:
Careers360: Congratulations on being a CMAT topper! Are you excited?
Mrigank: Thank you very much. I am definitely excited. I hope I can give similar performance in the other exams. This was my second attempt at CMAT. I am glad my results are good.
Careers360: You are 7th topper with a 99.98 percentile. How did you make it happen?
Mrigank: The plan was to finish General awareness and English first so that I could concentrate on Quants and logical reasoning. Also, I appeared for many mock tests. Mock tests really help as they give you an insight into what you can expect in the actual exam. I took around 20 AIMCats. The idea is to find the correct and fastest way to solve a problem.
Careers360: Great! Tell us about yourself. What are your current interests?
Mrigank: Well, I am a civil engineering graduate from Pitech, Raipur. I passed out this year and have been freelancing in construction projectswhile preparing for Management. You see works experience gives you a clear edge if you are planning to pursue MBA. I have some friends whose family’s have business in the construction sector. So, I work part time for them. I am not on a payroll but, yes, I do get paid for the projects I work on. Besides the monetary aspect, it also has the added advantage of learning on fieldwork.
Careers360: Tell us about your preparation strategy? How did you divide your time?
Mrigank: I tried to finish General awareness and English first before moving on to Quants and Logical reasoning. For CMAT, 3 hours of preparation is more than enough. I spend 2 hours every day on mock tests. It gave me an idea on the type of questions that I had not attempted before. I tried to find loopholes in my preparation to find the correct method to solve the problems in hand.
I realized that for general awareness, reading just the newspaper is not enough. From my first attempt I found that, there are questions from history as well as recent happenings on acquisitions and deals. So, I tried to keep a tab on what was happening on the business front.
Careers360: Do you think that as an engineering graduate you have an edge in exams like CMA or CAT?
Mrigank: Honestly, exams like CMAT or CAT are equally tough for engineering students. It is just the application of basic common sense. For example, Speed time and distance. All you need to do in time of questions is identify the problem and apply logic. Yes, having an engineering background does make your calculations strong but for the rest engineering students are on a equal footing with non-engineering students.
Careers360: So are you attempting other MBA related exams too?
Mrigank: Yes. Besides CMAT, my focus is also on the other major MBA exams, especially,CAT, XAT, MAT. MyCAT exam isdue on November 22 and right now I am putting all my efforts in the test.
Careers360: So are you following the same preparation strategy for CAT as you applied for CMAT?
Mrigank: Not quite. You see, in CMAT you start with the easiest sections. So, your first 25 questions are almost done and you have remaining 75 questions to concentrate on. However, what CAT demands is accuracy and precision with every problem. That is the trick. You have to apply logical reasoning in every problem.

Careers360: The B-schools have started their application process for 2015. Which is your dream B-school?
Mrigank: Like every MBA aspirant I, too, dream of getting placed at one of the IIMs. Besides that, however, I am also aiming for SP Jain, KJ Somaiya, Simsree, IIFT to name a few. Right now, I am hoping for the best.
Careers360: Do you have tips or suggestions for future CMAT takers?
Mrigank: Yes. Concentrate on each section separately. Apply a different strategy for the sections. For instance, in logical reasoning it is imperative that you read the question first before you start analysing the data. Knowing what you want first gets you the answer. In case of quants, if you have practiced for CAT then consider half your work done. Practicing for CAT makes attempting CMAT questions easier.

I have scored 210marks with 82.79 percentile approx in CMAT 2020.Belonging to General-EWS Category,Is it ossible to secure a seat for MBA from MS university Baroda ?!
1st of all, the percentile system is different that percentage system. Percentile system depends on the aspirant who scored highest marks, and keeping his percentile as base every other aspirant receives his percentile. Hence cut off of every college differs every year. depending upon total number of aspirants, highest scorer, number of seats, difficulty level.
If we take previous year records scores the cutoff has been nearly 176-208 for MS University.
So a score in greater than this will help you to have more chance of college conversion. also you have General EWS category so that will further help you.
Is it advisable to pursue MBA either from PP Savani University (Surat) or from ITM University (Baroda) ? Which are other good private b-schools in Gujarat for a person with poor CMAT score ?
ITM University Baroda is far better then PP Savani University Surat because the placement in ITM University for MBA pass out student is 100 percent. On the other hand PP Savani University Surat for MBA studies have good faculties for continuing studies there but the placement is not so good there. During the last 1 year many MNCnot doing their campusing in PP Savani University in Surat
