Careers360: What was your objective behind pursuing Management programme? What are your aspirations?
Roshan: After working for about 20 months post engineering; I realized that I needed a push in my career trajectory. MBA from a premier B-School was an obvious choice primarily because of two reasons; firstly, it provides me functional knowledge of various aspects of business environment, and secondly, it opens doors to whole new set of career opportunities. Post MBA, I aspire to work in one of the top 4 Trading companies that recruit exclusively from IIFT in India.
Careers360: Apart from IIFT 2013, which other MBA entrance exams you took and how was your performance?
Roshan: Apart from IIFT 2013, I took CAT, SNAP, NMAT and Maharashtra CET. I managed to secure 98.3 percentile in CAT and 99.73 percentile in SNAP. My score in NMAT was 216 out of 360. In Maharashtra CET, my score was 146/200. My performance in all the exams was as per my expectations.
Careers360: Why did you choose to join IIFT Delhi? Please also name other B-schools which made final admission offers to you.
Roshan: Apart from IIFT Delhi, I managed to bag converts from MDI Gurgaon, Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, NMIMS Mumbai and XIMB. I chose IIFT because of its excellent pedagogy and my interest in Trade. Also, a relatively smaller batch size, excellent placement record, eminent faculty and location were some of the factors that I considered.
Careers360: What was your preparation strategy for IIFT 2013?
Roshan: My preparation for CAT helped me for IIFT 2013 too. But again, IIFT exam is different from CAT in three ways –
A. IIFT exam checks for speed as well as accuracy. Time per question in IIFT exam is significantly shorter than that in CAT. To increase speed, solve previous years IIFT papers within the time limit. I analyzed my mistakes and corrected them.
B. DI Section – DI questions in IIFT have very verbose and close options. Practice solving those in about one minute per question.
C. GK Section – GK questions in exams like XAT are more business oriented. Interestingly in IIFT exam, I found questions from diverse range of topics like Politics, International affairs, Business, International Organizations, Books and Authors, Cinema etc.
Careers360: How important is Coaching or Mentoring to crack IIFT or other Management entrance tests?
Roshan: Coaching can help students to clear concepts and stay focused. But if you are an engineer and short of time, coaching is not mandatory. For aspirants from other backgrounds, coaching can help you for Quantitative aptitude section. I would recommend joining a good test series for various exams and solving the papers diligently. After each attempt, analyze your weak areas and work upon them. Repeat this procedure after every attempt. This is a magic formula to improve your weak areas!
Careers360: How did you manage IIFT preparation schedule along with working hours?
Roshan: I started my preparation about six months in advance of CAT and studied on weekends. I also used to study for an hour or two post work hours. This strategy will obviously reduce on your social life but in the end it would be worth the effort. Perseverance can be difficult if you are working. In that case, I would recommend you to join a good coaching institute which offers classes on weekends. That will give you reality check and help you prepare better.

Careers360: Please share your preparation strategy for the English Comprehensive, General Knowledge & Awareness and Logical Reasoning & Quantitative Analysis.
Roshan: Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension was my forte. Use flash cards to enhance your vocabulary since it plays a vital role all entrance exams (especially IIFT). To improve your comprehension skills, read Atlas Shrugged and Fountainhead by Ayn Rand, Charles Dickens’s works etc. Divide your preparation for General Awareness section in two parts-Static GK and Dynamic GK. For static GK you can refer to any good GK book (Manorama Yearbook, for example). To improve your dynamic GK current affairs) keep yourself abreast of all the important news on a daily basis.
Careers360: What was your Time Management formula while taking the actual IIFT paper?
Roshan: Answer GK section in the first five minutes. GK section takes minimum time as you either know the answers or don’t. Next, turn to your strong section and solve all the questions in that section. This is to maximize the score. But, IIFT also has sectional cutoffs. After solving all the questions in your strong section, my personal strategy was to solve questions in other sections in Bursts of Five. This ensures that you don’t fall short of minimum cutoff in any section. Since, IIFT is also emphasizes on speed along with accuracy, I would suggest not to spend more than 1.5 minute on any question.
Careers360: What were your strong and weak areas? How did you prepare and what special efforts did you put for improving your weak areas?
Roshan: My weak area was Quantitative aptitude. For any topic in quant section, I first worked on theory part and noted down important formulae and concepts. Next, I used to solve Level 1 questions. Next, I tried solving questions from Level 2 and turned to solutions only after putting in significant effort. I worked on my thought process while solving quant questions. At the end of the day, Practice is the key.
Careers360: What is your advice for the Management aspirants who will take IIFT 2014?
Roshan: Stay focused. Write down your goal and go through it daily. Take a good test series and perform thorough analysis. If the paper turns out to be difficult, don’t lose your calm. If it’s tough for you, it’s tough for others too. If I was to give one suggestion to all the aspirants then that would be – Solve all the past papers in the prescribed time.

what should be my Sectional cutoff in iift exam 2020
This is the sectional cutoff of IIFT exam 2020:
Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension 18-20
Quantitative Analysis 16-20
Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning 18-20
General Awareness (GK) 8-10
This sectional cutoff is for Delhi IIFT. So for other IIFTs it will be slightly lower.
Is iift consider your past academics record
- Hey, acccording to my opinion IIFT does not consider your past academics record . iift consider your good percentile WAT,PI and GD scores .if you are clear sectional cutoff and over all cutoff then you are eligible for shortlisted candidates .i think IIFT DELHI AND KOLKATA ARE THE GOOD CAMPUS . I THINK YOU SHOULD SCORES GOOD PERCENTILE THEN ACADEMIC RECORD DOES NOT MATTER FOR YOU FIRST YOU SHOULD GIVE TOTAL FOCUS TOWARD ENTRANCE EXAM.....
3.5 months are enough to crack CAT and IIFT exams ? Can anyone suggest me the study plan ? I am targetting maximum 97% in CAT and 145 marks in IIFT.
Sectional Division of Overall Preparation
Know your strengths along with weaknesses
Accept the importance of previous year question papers
Coaching or self-preparation
If you are preparing for CAT exam on a serious note, there won't be any problem preparing for IIFT too, provided you know the correct strategy for it! only the strategy of how you should play in the required format changes. So is the case with IIFT and other similar entrance exams apart from the CAT.
Firstly, from this year onwards, IIFT is conducted by NTA, so for the first time this year, IIFT will be conducted online just like any other MBA entrance exams! So there are two pros mainly I can think of -
- We don't have to spend our time circling the answers.
- We don't have to separately get accustomed to the paper based format from now.
This exam mainly consists of six sections -
- Reading Comprehension
- Verbal Ability
- Data Interpretation
- Logical Reasoning
- Quantitative Ability
Hope it helps
Thank you & Good Luck!!!
