Does being an engineer mean you can crack CAT faster? Or do non-engineers need a longer preparation timeline? The answer is more complicated than simply comparing academic backgrounds. CAT performance is determined by how well you perform in VARC, DILR and Quant, while your academic background can also influence the selection process at some IIMs.

There is no fixed preparation timeline for engineers or non-engineers. A student with strong Quant may need only a few months of focused preparation, while someone rebuilding their Maths fundamentals may need 8-12 months.
The Common Admission Test (CAT) 2026 will be held on Sunday, November 29, 2026, by IIM Indore. Registration started on August 3, 2026, and closes on September 15, 2026, at 5:00 PM on the official site, iimcat.ac.in.
An engineer may already be comfortable with Quant but struggle with reading comprehension, while a non-engineer may excel in VARC but need more time to rebuild Maths basics. So, the right CAT 2026 preparation timeline depends on your starting point, weak areas and available study time. Here is how engineers and non-engineers should plan their CAT preparation differently.
The idea that CAT is an engineering-focused exam is a complete myth. Although engineers may have an advantage when it comes to Mathematics, this is limited to their prior exposure to mathematical concepts and problem-solving. But this is limited to just having a different approach and problem-solving speed. This has been evident from the recent data as well; in CAT 2025, of the candidates who scored a perfect 100 percentile, 9 were from non-engineering backgrounds, and only 3 were engineers. Looking at 99.99 percentile scorers the same year, 14 were non-engineers compared to 12 engineers.
Apart from this, several IIMs also prioritise students from non-engineering backgrounds to build a diverse academic pool. For example, some IIMs add diversity points during the interview and final selection stage for candidates who did not study engineering.
Recent data suggests that IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Bangalore, IIM Calcutta, and a few other top IIMs, close to 40% of a typical MBA batch now comes from non-engineering degrees like BCom, BA, and BSc.
This means neither group has a fixed advantage anymore. Irrespective of your academics, you have to fill in the gaps, and this is what gives you the edge.

Many engineering students may have greater familiarity with Mathematics because of their academic background, although their actual CAT preparation needs will depend on their individual strengths and weaknesses. However, this doesn’t necessarily give them an edge over others in CAT. The preparation timeline of CAT for engineers depends on how strong you’re in VARC, DILR and Quant, and not on what background you come from.
So, an engineer who’s good at Quant but has poor reading skills will have to prepare more for VARC than for Quant. Similarly, someone who’s comfortable with DILR but finds Quant a bit intimidating will need to put in extra effort in the latter. Let’s see how different kinds of engineering students can prepare for CAT.
If someone was really good at Quant in college, he/she should not invest too much time solving advanced level quantitative problems. Instead, one should use this strength to invest more time in improving the weak area, which in this case is VARC.
Try to read more and practice 2-3 reading comprehension passages daily. Try to focus more on the message of the passage and what the author was trying to say rather than speed-reading. Practice parajumbles, paragraph summary and odd-one-out questions on a regular basis. If someone is really determined to improve in VARC, then 6-8 months of dedicated and smart practice should be more than enough.
Some engineering students are good at DILR but are unable to finish enough questions in the exam due to time constraints. In such cases, identifying easy and doable questions and managing time efficiently are the way to go.
One should take sectional tests and try to figure out which particular sets are easy for them and which ones are not. If someone finds a set particularly difficult while practising, they should leave it and move on to the next one. Similarly, in Quant, one shouldn’t get bogged down by a single question just because one knows the concept. In short, if you have a good hand at DILR but are just struggling with time, 4-6 months of rigorous practice and mock tests should do the trick.
If you are starting your preparation from scratch, then it’s best to give yourself 8-12 months for CAT. This is because someone who is starting CAT preparation from scratch needs additional time to build familiarity with the exam pattern and strengthen the basics of VARC, DILR and Quant.
First of all, try to strengthen your basics in quantitative aptitude, especially arithmetic and algebra. Also, learn different types of sets used in DILR and start reading more on a daily basis to improve your VARC skills. The first few months should be dedicated to learning concepts and practising easy questions. After that, one can move on to sectional tests followed by full length mocks. The last 3-4 months should be spent analysing mocks, improving weak areas and working on speed and accuracy
Non-engineers can crack CAT as well, but there must be a strategy to deal with their weak areas. Commerce, Arts, Science, Law and other stream students have varying levels of proficiency in VARC, DILR and Quant. Also, the preparation timeline for CAT depends on the individual’s current level of preparedness and not his/her stream. Below you will find preparation strategies for Non-Engineers as per their strengths and weaknesses.
If you have not studied maths for years or if you have poor basics, then it is better to start your quant preparation early. Dedicate 8-12 months to learn and practice various topics. Start with Arithmetic, Percentages, P&L, R&P, Averages, Time & Work, TSD and other easy topics. Do not get tempted to solve tough questions. First, understand the concepts and clear your basics. Once you gain confidence, start practicing easy, then move on to moderate and finally difficult questions. Try to learn calculation shortcuts to save time. With consistent practice, you can make this section your strongest section even if you have weak basics.
Many non-engineer students like Arts stream students are good readers. But, they might not be familiar with DILR types of questions. If you find this section difficult, then it is better to spend more time understanding different types of sets and caselets rather than practicing difficult sets over and over again. Start with easy sets like arrangements, tables, games and tournaments, distribution and finally data interpretation. Try to understand what exactly is being asked in a particular set and how to represent the given data logically before you try to solve it within the time frame. You can start preparing for DILR 6-8 months ahead of the exam date if you have strong VARC skills and fair understanding of Quant.
If you are completely new to CAT, a well-defined 10-12 month preparation plan can give you enough time to build your fundamentals, practise questions and take regular mocks.
First, try to learn all the important topics and take up a mock test to understand the problem areas. Spend at least 4-5 months on strengthening your basics before you move on to the next level. Practice more and more questions from the topics that you find difficult.
Take regular topic-wise and section-wise tests to track your progress. In the last 3-4 months, start taking mocks regularly and analyse each of them properly. This will help you learn how to select the right questions and avoid getting stuck in a single question.
Study hours for CAT aren't fixed by whether you're an engineer or non-engineer; they depend on your prep stage, weak areas, and available time. Working professionals must try to study at least 2 to 3 hours, while college students must try to manage their studies in 3 to 5 hours. The main agenda of students must be to rework on their weak parts and strengthen their strong subjects. Here is a quick insight into the timeline one should follow:

If you have just 3 months to prepare for the CAT, it is critical to utilise the assets you already have. Engineers often find Quant and analytical reasoning relatively easier. However, it is a common error to get stuck doing what one does best. You need to improve upon your weak areas while also working on your speed and taking mocks.
As someone who finds Quant and Data Interpretation relatively easier, it is understandable if you choose to practice these sections over VARC. However, do not ignore this section. The percentile boost that you will get by practising it regularly is unparalleled.
Read and solve comprehension passages every day. Work on understanding the main idea, the author’s viewpoint, and arguments. Practising para summary, parajumble, and other verbal ability questions within a stipulated time will help you improve considerably. Doing 45-60 minutes of regular VARC practice every day should yield satisfactory results within 3 months.
If you are confident about your hold over Mathematics, it is advisable not to over-practice the topics you already know well. It is critical to know which questions to attempt and which to leave alone. Therefore, within this section, it is best to regularly practice topics that you know well and use this extra time to practice and improve upon weak areas.
While it is important to know various types of sets that appear in this section, it is more important to know how to select the questions.
While practising different DILR sets, it is important to develop an idea of what to look for in the set. Within the first few minutes, you must be able to determine if the given set is solvable or not. If it is not, do not waste your time trying to figure it out. During sectional tests and mocks, always begin with the sets you think you can solve. If you are stuck on a set, move on to the next one immediately.
You do not have enough time, so begin taking mocks as soon as you have completed 1-2 topics. With only 3 months in hand, you can take weekly mocks. However, it is essential to analyse them thoroughly to get maximum benefit out of them. During analysis, pay special attention to the questions you get wrong, the easy ones you skip, and the ones that waste your time.
Using this information, you can strategise better for the following week. In the last month, you must focus solely on mocks, daily sectional tests, revision, and strategy building.
Non-engineers can definitely crack CAT in three months. But, they need to be more targeted in their preparation. If you are weak in quant, it might not be the best idea to try and learn all the concepts in this short span of time. It is important to learn the basics of each topic, and also try and practice regularly.
Quant concepts require time to grasp. So, it is important to start preparing for this section right away. It is better to first work on topics that you are most weak in, and understand the basics first before attempting to solve CAT level questions.
Do not just spend hours memorising formulae without trying to solve problems. It is better to learn a concept, practice easy and moderate level questions related to it and understand how CAT likes to test these concepts. Try and practice at least 2-3 questions of easy and moderate level daily. This will help build your grasp on the basics, which you can later apply to solve tougher questions.
If you are a non-engineer, arithmetic is going to be your friend. It is better to first master some basic arithmetic topics before moving on to other sections. Most questions from this topic are mostly simple, and do not require too much advanced calculations. However, they do require you to have a strong grip over the concepts. Practice topics like Percentages, Ratio and Proportion, Averages, Profit and Loss, Time and Work, and Time, Speed and Distance.
Once you are comfortable with these topics, solve questions from easy to moderate level to boost your confidence. Then, in the next phase, you can try and practice topics in time-bound conditions, and focus on clearing your basics for topics that you are not so strong in. It is important to be thorough with a few topics rather than learn a lot of topics only superficially.
If you are not so strong in the DILR section, you can work on practising easy sets and then move on to moderate and difficult ones. Try and solve sets from topics like Arrangements, Distribution, Tables, Games and Tournaments, Data Interpretation, etc.
It is better you start by understanding the set first before thinking about solving it. In the initial stages, you need to spend more time on understanding the type of questions being asked, rather than rushing to solve them. In this phase, you need to build your grasp of the type of sets that are usually asked in the exam. Try and practice these sets in time-bound conditions only in the last month of preparation. During this period, you can also practice mixed sets by giving sectional tests and mocks.
If you are strong in the VARC section, you should use this to your advantage. You can spend more time practising RCs and verbal ability questions to increase your accuracy in this section. Being good at verbal ability does not mean you will automatically be good at solving VARC questions asked in CAT. It is, therefore, crucial that you keep reading newspapers and books on a regular basis, and also practice reading comprehension passages.
It is always better to have high accuracy rather than attempt more questions. If you are able to consistently score high in this section in your mocks, it is a good idea to use this section as your lifeline while working on improving your weak areas. However, remember that scoring high in a single section is not sufficient to get a good percentile. You need to ensure that you are also able to clear the cutoffs for the other two sections.
There is no absolute advantage for engineers or non-engineers in CAT. The exam tests your ability in VARC, DILR and Quantitative Ability, and your percentile is decided on the basis of your performance in these areas in comparison with others. Therefore, your academic background might give you an edge, but it will not be a deciding factor for your CAT score.
Engineers may feel a slight advantage over non-engineers in the QA section, or certain topics in DILR, due to their prior exposure to Mathematics and analytical thinking. However, this advantage is not absolute, and engineers would still need to prepare thoroughly for the rest of the sections. They may also discover that they are at a disadvantage in comparison with non-engineers in the VARC section, particularly in reading comprehension, as CAT tests one’s reading skills and logical ability to a greater extent than mere grammatical accuracy.
Non-engineers, on the other hand, might find that they have an advantage over engineers in the VARC section. However, those who did not study Mathematics at the higher secondary level may need to spend more time preparing for the QA section.
