Careers360: What was your objective behind pursuing Management programme? What are your aspirations?
Satyaki: Pursuing an MBA was my long sought dream. I always wanted to be involved in the decision making process of a company and doing an MBA was the best way to achieve it. I wanted to learn from the very people who had themselves taken the path less travelled and made it big in life. My aspiration is to become the brand manager of a big FMCG brand, like HUL, and launch/reposition a product. I want to be involved right from the inception of the product to seeing it soar.
Careers360: Which other MBA entrance exams you appeared in and how was your performance?
Satyaki:Apart from IIFT, I appeared in CAT only. My preparation was focused on these two management entrance examinations. But my performance in IIFT entrance examination was better than CAT.
Careers360: Why did you take admission in IIFT?
Satyaki: I joined IIFT, Delhi because of its brand superiority and its niche factor. It is the only institute which offers an MBA in International Business. It has an immensely strong Alumni base that is in the top echelons of FMCG brands, Investment Banks and Consulting firms. It is a pioneer in the field of trade and all these were my rationale behind joining IIFT.
Careers360: What was your preparation strategy for IIFT 2013?
Satyaki: I never overcomplicated thing. Quants section was my forte. So I always focused more on Verbal’s, especially the paragraphs which can baffle the “Shakespeare” out of anyone. These paragraphs need to be approached clinically.
This cannot happen overnight, so the only thing required is practice. You need to manage your time well. This might be a clichéd statement but it is all the more true. You have to be persistent in your preparations. Even after a long day’s work, when your body tends to give up, you have to go, sit and study. It is also important to take all the Mock Cats very seriously.

Careers360: How important is Coaching or Mentoring to crack IIFT or other Management entrance tests?
Satyaki: It indeed is important. Maybe not because of the content which they offer, but because of the regularity they bring in you. The regular Mocks, the classes and the doubt clearing sessions help every aspirant. But if you have regular classes to attend, it actually gives a pull which is required to motivate a person. It also keeps you abreast of the changes and you get to learn an expert’s view at the end of the day.
Careers360: How did you manage IIFT preparation schedule along with your working hours?
Satyaki: It was difficult, at times very strenuous to concentrate and prepare with so much of pressure at work. But I always motivated myself saying that it’s the last leap “let me give it the best”
I had and maintained a strict routine. I always tried to put in at least an hour or two on a daily basis and around 10 hrs (5 each) on a weekend. I started preparing from May’13 and also enrolled for Test series Daily, I used to solve at least a few questions online. So I would say sticking to the plan and being consistent worked for me.
Careers360: Please share your preparation strategy for the English Comprehensive, General Knowledge & Awareness and Logical Reasoning & Quantitative Analysis.
Satyaki:English Comprehensive: Read lots of Paragraphs, read newspaper daily and approach with an objective mind and not in a subjective way.
GK: Solving past papers and Manorama year book supports.
LR and Quant’s: Practice a few problems daily. Gradually increase the level of questions. I followed Arun Sharma religiously. Solve questions from Social Forums and other online test series’. Not ignoring any area is important for every aspirant. The questions in the exam are diversified, so do not ignore question related to some other feild
Careers360: What was your Time Management formula while taking the actual IIFT paper?
Satyaki:My strategy was to maximize attempts. I went through the entire paper once and then started doing all the easy ones. I tried to solve questions uniformly from all sections. I did not swap sections frequently. I let go of questions if they were not solved in the first attempt. The passages tend to be easy. So I tried solving all of them. LR was also on the easier side, so I tried to maximize my score by answering all of them.
Careers360: What were your strong and weak areas? How did you prepare and what special efforts did you put for improving your weak areas?
Satyaki:Strong Areas: LR and Quants and Weak Areas: Passages and DI. I spent a significant amount of my entire prep’s time for my weak section. For starting, I saw a few online videos and then tried implementing those in the questions. It did not work initially. But gradually it started working. This happened with DI specifically. At time with the passage section, you really have no way of knowing which the right answer is or whether all the logic which you have applied stands valid or not. So reading a lot of literary material is the only way to be strong in a particular section.
Careers360: What is your advice for the Management aspirants who will take IIFT 2014?
Satyaki:My advice would be to prepare for the exam with a very sound approach. To keep the basics straight and not follow too many strategies is the mantra. It is all about working to your strengths and hiding your weaknesses. It is also important to attempt equal number of questions from all the sections.
Careers360: How did you divide your timings between preparation and recreational activities? What were the activities that you did besides preparing for the exam?
Satyaki: I am a big time foodie. So the only recreational activity I did was eating in different restaurants. I am also a fan of of Pink Floyd’s music, and I always had them on my I-Pod. They were real stress busters during my preparations.
