The GD and Essay Writing topics can be on several topics pertaining to current affairs or phrases, proverbs or anything under the sun. The Essay Writing topics will either be the same as the GD or it might be different as well.
Sharing his GD/PI experience, IIFT student Ishan Arora from class of 2012-14 says, “IIFT has a slightly different GD where every person is given 2 minutes initially to state his/her views on the topic, after which the floor is thrown open for discussion for about 15-20 minutes.” The topic of his essay writing was “The British Raj: Boon or Bane for India”.
Another topper Malobi Banerjee, who entered IIFT after her engineering says, “The IIFT GD goes on for 45 minutes which gives everybody ample time to present their points of views, it also allows for a more organized and well rounded discussion. The essay also tests the participants on their clarity of thought and time management skills.”
“The PI for me was slightly difficult but it was done more to see how one handles stress,” she adds.
Mudrika Chandnani, IIFT topper of 2012-14, says “Based on written score, shortlisted students are asked to fill a detailed form, after which GD and PI process starts. My experience was very smooth, with no glitches.”
BITS Pilani graduate Rujit Sanghi who entered the prestigious institution in 2013, says that the GD process at IIFT was the well organized and regulated. “In all of my GD experiences, the GD at IIFT was the most organized and the best regulated. It gave ample time for everyone to make his/her points clearly and also gave everyone a chance to mediate the discussion and guide it the best they felt.”
Sanghi says that the SOP (Statement of Purpose) that was required to be submitted after the initial shortlist gave the student ample opportunity to present his case in front of the panel in the personal interview round. “Overall, the process considered an applicant’s verbal and written skills as well as background to make a call on the list of final converts. It was a very detailed and fair method of selecting the applicants which has resulted in a brilliant batch quality,” Sanghi says.
IIFT topper from Class of 2012, Shambhavi Singh says that IIFT GD was a great experience for her as there was enough airtime for everyone to put their thought. But she cautions that candidates are required to make sense and pitch in great points. “Also, at any time, the evaluating professors may make anyone from the group act as the moderator. So, it’s different,” she shares from her experience.
The questions in the Personal Interview round will be on your SOP, performance in GD and Essay Writing and past academic records, hobbies, current affairs and work experience if applicable.
Shambhavi says that the SOP is very important as your entire interview may revolve around that. “Though that did not happen with me, a lot of people had that experience. I just made sure that I proof read my form multiple times and got other people’s opinions as well,” she says, adding, “IIFT interview is taken by our professors. They are very senior faculty and make one feel very comfortable. Questions for me were the usual ones revolving around why MBA, why IIFT, my hobbies etc.”
