CAT DILR Set Types 2026: 5-Year PYQ Analysis, Important Sets and Pattern Changes

CAT DILR Set Types 2026: 5-Year PYQ Analysis, Important Sets and Pattern Changes

Hitesh SahuUpdated on 12 Aug 2026, 02:10 PM IST

With 75 DILR sets and 312 questions from CAT 2021 to 2025, the last five years reveal a bigger trend: CAT continues to test familiar DILR structures, but increasingly changes how they are presented. While CAT continues to test familiar structures such as arrangements, distributions, games, scheduling, networks and data-based reasoning, the way these concepts are presented keeps changing. From train occupancy and pollution measures to visa processing, currency exchanges and employee ratings, familiar logic is increasingly wrapped in unfamiliar contexts. So, for CAT 2026, knowing the common DILR set types is only the starting point. The real advantage lies in recognising the underlying structure quickly and identifying which sets are worth your time.

CAT DILR Previous Year Analysis: Which Set Types Keep Appearing?

The five-year PYQs reveal several recurring CAT DILR set types, including arrangements and ordering, games and tournaments, routes and networks, tables and charts, distribution and allocation, scheduling, caselets, and mixed DI-LR sets.

    1. Arrangements and Ordering

These sets involve placement, sequencing, ranking or movement.

CAT 2025 Slot 1 had a set with 4 people and 7 chairs arranged in a manner that people moved from one chair to another in seven different steps following certain rules

Prepare: circular arrangements, sequencing, rankings and movement-based arrangements.

    2. Games and Tournaments

These sets involve outcomes of games, matches or tournaments.

A set from CAT 2021 had 12 players split into 4 groups followed by a knockout semi-final and final.

Prepare: Win-loss logic, rankings, knockout tournaments and deductions based on matches played.

    3. Tables, Charts and Caselets

CAT data interpretation sets can require both calculation and deduction. Recent CAT Previous Year Question Papers have used information involving trade, sales, ratings and research papers, rather than relying only on conventional charts.

Prepare: tables, bar charts, multi-variable data and caselet-based DI.

    4. Distribution and Allocation

These sets require values, people or objects to be distributed while satisfying multiple restrictions.

One PYQ involved nine distinct Pollution Measures from 10 to 90, allocated among cities and non-urban regions, followed by weighted-average questions.

Prepare: allocation, grouping, distribution and constraint-based numerical sets.

    5. Routes and Networks

These types of problems contain elements such as connections, distances, and restrictions.

CAT 2024 featured a network of pathways and lakes with specific distances, asking candidates to identify possible routes and associated information.

Practice Problems: Paths, networks, distances, and optimisation of routes.

    6. Scheduling

Scheduling sets arrange activities, employees, projects or events across different periods.

A CAT 2021 set represented employee project schedules through horizontal time bars, with starting and completion periods and work percentages.

Prepare: timelines, project scheduling, sequencing and overlapping activities.

    7. CAT DILR Mixed DI-LR Sets

Mixed DI-LR sets combine numerical information with logical conditions, requiring candidates to interpret data and apply deductions within the same set. Recent PYQs show that a set may involve calculations alongside multiple logical constraints.

Prepare: Data interpretation, percentage calculations, tables, caselets, and multi-condition logical reasoning.

CAT DILR Set Types 2026: Recurring Patterns from 2021–2025 PYQs

Rather than predicting which topics will appear in CAT 2026, focus on the DILR set types that repeatedly appeared in the CAT 2021–2025 PYQs.

The five-year PYQs repeatedly feature arrangements and ordering, games and tournaments, distribution and allocation, tables and charts, routes and networks, scheduling, caselets and mixed DI-LR structures. However, these categories can overlap, so preparation should focus on recognising the underlying logic rather than memorising a fixed topic hierarchy.

The important point is not to memorise these categories separately. CAT can combine numerical information and logical conditions within the same set. Recent PYQs include train occupancy, currency conversion and rating-based problems that require both interpretation and deduction.

CAT DILR Pattern: Major Shifts from 2021 to 2025

The 2021-2025 PYQs show clear shifts in the number of questions, set presentation, and the importance of set selection. While the underlying DILR structures remain familiar, the way CAT presents them has become more varied.

Shift 1: The Number of Questions Increased from 20 to 22 per Slot

The most noticeable change between CAT 2021–2023 and CAT 2024–2025 was the increase in the DILR question count. DILR had 20 questions per slot in 2021, 2022 and 2023, before increasing to 22 questions per slot in both 2024 and 2025.

This makes time allocation and set selection even more important for CAT 2026.

Shift 2: Greater Variety in How Familiar Concepts Are Presented

The core DILR set types remain recognisable, but their contexts, conditions and presentation can vary considerably. The five-year PYQs include arrangements presented through movement, scheduling through project timelines, and numerical sets involving trade, pollution, ratings and travel. This means recognising the underlying structure is more useful than relying only on the surface context of a set.

For example, CAT 2025 included an arrangement involving four people and seven chairs.

What this means for CAT 2026: Practise identifying the underlying structure of a set even when its context or presentation is unfamiliar.

Shift 3: DI and LR Are Increasingly Interlinked

The distinction between pure DI and pure LR has become increasingly blurred. A candidate might have to interpret some data and apply multiple layers of logic to arrive at the answer.

CAT 2025 had sets on percentage occupied in trains, currency conversion and response patterns, which demanded a logical analysis of numerical information.

What this means for CAT 2026: Practise complete DILR sets instead of preparing DI and LR entirely as separate areas.

Shift 4: Set Selection Has Become a Core Skill

The five-year analysis shows that DILR is not about attempting every set. Candidates need to identify solvable sets quickly, estimate the effort required, and move on when a set is consuming too much time.

This is particularly relevant after the move from 20 to 22 questions per slot. More questions do not necessarily mean more time; therefore, spending too long decoding one difficult set can have a larger opportunity cost.

How to Use CAT DILR PYQs for CAT 2026

Use the CAT DILR PYQs from 2021 - 2025 in three stages:

    1. Concept exposure: Solve sets from all major categories without worrying excessively about speed.

    2. Set selection: Before solving, spend a short time identifying the information structure, number of conditions and likely calculation load.

    3. Performance analysis: After every set, record whether the problem was difficult because of the concept, interpretation, calculation or your initial set-selection decision.

The PYQ compilation specifically recommends reviewing mistakes, revisiting difficult sets and comparing speed and accuracy across attempts.
