CAT 2014 Analysis by TIME
CAT 2014 Analysis by TIME- Careers360 brings the CAT 2014 Analysis by T.I.M.E.. The coaching centre has analysed the both the slot papers of CAT 2014 day 1. The CAT 2014 Analysis has been done in terms of paper pattern, common topics covered, and difficulty level of questions (easy/ moderate/difficult) of CAT 2014.
Following is a brief analysis of CAT 2014 by TIME:
With the exam scheduled to have only four test sessions and correspondingly only four test forms, the rather lengthy 20-day saga has now been drastically cut short to just two days. Today, the first session of CAT 2014 was conducted across hundreds of test centers, spanning nearly a hundred cities across the country, with almost no technical glitches being reported.
As disclosed by the IIMs, the CAT paper consisted of two sections – Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation and Verbal Ability and Logical Reasoning – with each section having 50 questions, and an overall duration of 170 minutes. This is a significantly extended version over the 30 question-per section and 140 minute duration seen over the last few years. Further, this time, there was no 15 minutes tutorial at the beginning of the test, unlike that in the last few years. Instead, a comprehensive demo test, complete with instructions and FAQs, was made available well in advance to help students familiarize themselves with the pattern and experience.

While the level of checking done while allowing the candidates into the exam centers has been reported to have been as strict as that mentioned on the CAT website, at a few centers, students have reported that even frisking was not done.
Further, at some centres, the infrastructure has been reported to be below-par for an exam like CAT. And this was not restricted to not having AC alone – even the computer systems used for test administration were old and did not give students a happy test-taking experience.
As per our interactions with several students, across the country, who took the CAT in the first slot, the CAT, overall, was perceived to be not very different in terms of quality of content or the difficulty level when compared to the past few CATs. But, individual areas were reported to have seen noteworthy variations in difficulty level, especially when compared to the past couple of years. In section-I, the area of Quantitative Ability was perceived to be relatively simpler and doable by most students, when compared to the high level of concepts and difficulty level seen in the recent past. However, the opposite could be said about the area of Data Interpretation, wherein involved and relatively difficult sets had appeared, when compared to the moderate level of difficulty seen earlier. In section-II, the VA and RC parts were rated to be of roughly the same level as that in the last few years, but the LR part was perceived to be very difficult.
T.I.M.E students expressed their happiness about the fact that the number of DI questions (n Section-I) and LR (in Section-II) that appeared in the CAT was the same as that they experienced in the last three AIMCATs given by T.I.M.E.. All the sets of questions in DI, RC and LR had four questions each as indicated on the official website of the CAT.
Test takers felt that those who are strong with the core concepts in the test areas would have been able to do better T.I.M.E students opined the rigor the AIMCATs put them through made life easier in the actual CAT. They complimented the exhaustive preparation our courseware gave them, which helped them do well in the CAT.
It is likely you would come across a lot of legally permissible and sometimes impermissible information floating on the net, on various online platforms - about the types of questions, difficulty levels and a few other details about the exam. It goes without saying that you have to tread with utmost caution with regard to any such content you may have access to. There have been innumerable cases in the past where students were misled due to the wrong cues they picked up from such dubious claims. If you are appearing for the CAT on the 22nd, do not change your entire test-taking strategy based on hearsay about the composition of a few questions in a particular slot. It need not be the same for a later slot.
