Yes, an average student can crack XAT with focused preparation, even if their Quant, Verbal or Decision Making skills are not strong at the beginning. The key is to build basic concepts first, practise questions in increasing difficulty, analyse XAT previous-year papers and take regular mocks. Instead of trying to master every topic, students should identify their weak areas, improve accuracy and develop a practical question-selection strategy.

An average student should not start his XAT preparation by trying to cover the entire syllabus. He needs to identify his gaps in preparation and then fill them. Here are a few steps one must take to get started with XAT preparation.
The first step towards successful XAT preparation is to go through the syllabus. This helps to get clarity about the total subjects, marking scheme, important topics and more. Once done, go deep into the XAT syllabus and find out topics that you are strong and weak at.
If you want to work on your Quantitative Ability, avoid practising advanced XAT-level questions and focus on building your basics. Some of the topics that are common to most questions include percentages, ratios, averages, profit-loss, time and work, time-distance, equations, and numbers. Once you are comfortable with the concept, build your basics by solving easy questions. Then move to XAT-level questions. Do not leave any topic until you can solve all easy questions based on it.
While practising Decision-Making questions is straightforward, it is essential to understand what makes them different. Solve previous year’s question papers to get a good understanding of this section. Try to figure out why an option is wrong after solving each set instead of just looking at the answer. Once you are done, review what were the decisions you made while practising Decision Making and why they did not turn out to be the correct options. You must be able to differentiate between an option that sounds good and one that you can prove.
After building your basics, start using XAT previous year’s questions as a resource to prepare for the actual exam. First, practice topic-wise and then move on to section-wise. Keep track of the questions you get wrong or cannot solve quickly enough. If there is any particular type of question that confuses you, repeat the concept and practice questions related to it. Do not continue to attempt random questions if you keep making the same mistakes.
It is pointless to take multiple mocks if you cannot review them effectively. You should take tests only when you have thoroughly prepared most of the concepts and practised enough questions. However, keep their frequency low. Ideally, there should be one mock test a week. You should spend more than half of the time you spend on mocks actually analysing them. Make a list of questions where you made conceptual or calculation errors, misread, marked the wrong ones, or misunderstood the problem requirements.

XAT can be challenging because it tests students on more than just academic knowledge. The exam includes questions that require careful reading, logical thinking, decision-making, calculation and good time management. Some questions may look easy but have confusing options, while others can take more time to solve. Students who are preparing for XAT should understand these challenges early so they can plan their preparation accordingly.
The Quantitative Aptitude and Data Interpretation section can be difficult for students who are not comfortable with mathematics. XAT Quantitative Aptitude section can include questions from topics such as arithmetic, algebra, geometry, numbers and data interpretation. Some questions may require multiple steps to reach the answer. Students should therefore focus on understanding basic concepts before moving to advanced questions. Regular practice can also help improve calculation speed and accuracy.
Decision Making is one of the most distinctive and challenging parts of XAT. The XAT Decision Making questions are generally based on short situations involving business, workplace, personal or social issues. Students have to study the situation carefully and select the most appropriate option. The difficulty is that more than one option may appear reasonable. Students need to understand the information given, identify the key issue and choose the option that best fits the situation rather than simply selecting what they personally prefer.
The Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension section can be challenging because some passages are lengthy, abstract or based on unfamiliar subjects. Students may need to understand the author's main argument, tone, assumptions and conclusions. Simply reading quickly is not enough. Candidates should practise different types of RC passages and learn to identify important information while avoiding unnecessary details. Regular reading of editorials, essays and other quality articles can also improve comprehension.
Time management is another major challenge in XAT. Students may spend too much time on a difficult Quant question or a confusing Decision Making set and then have less time for easier questions later. The aim should not be to solve every question. Candidates need to identify which questions are worth attempting and which ones should be left for later. Taking timed sectional tests and full-length XAT mock tests helps students develop a practical approach to managing the available exam time.
XAT requires students to balance the number of questions they attempt with the accuracy of their answers. Attempting questions without properly understanding them can reduce the overall score. At the same time, being too cautious can result in too many unattempted questions. Students should analyse their mock tests to understand their accuracy, common mistakes and time spent on different question types. This helps them develop a question-selection strategy that works for their own strengths and weaknesses.
For an average student, XAT preparation should focus on improving the score step by step rather than trying to master the entire syllabus at once. The three areas below cover how to build your score, decide how many questions to attempt, and avoid mistakes that can waste preparation time and reduce your final score.
An average student should first strengthen topics that appear regularly and can be improved with practice. In Quant, start with percentages, ratios, averages, profit and loss, time and work, time-distance, equations and numbers, as these are already identified as common areas in the preparation plan.
Do not move directly to difficult XAT questions. First solve easy questions correctly, then move to moderate and finally XAT-level questions. This gives you a measurable way to improve instead of simply spending more hours studying.
For every weak topic, follow the same process: Learn the concept → solve easy questions → solve XAT-level questions.
For example, if percentages is weak, first revise the basic concepts. Then solve around 15–20 easy questions, followed by 10–15 moderate questions. Finally, practise previous-year XAT questions from that topic.
Maintain a mistake notebook and record questions you got wrong because of a concept error, calculation error or misunderstanding.
Average students should not spend all their preparation time on Quant. Your current plan gives special importance to Decision Making and Reading Comprehension during the practice stage.
For DM, solve previous-year sets and write down why the correct option works and why the other options fail. For RC, practise different types of passages and focus on the author's argument, tone and conclusion.
Taking more mocks does not automatically improve your score. Your existing plan recommends about one mock per week and spending more than half of the mock time on analysis.
After every mock, divide your mistakes into four groups:
Conceptual mistakes
Calculation mistakes
Questions you misunderstood
Questions where you spent too much time
Do not expect a major score jump after one week. Set targets based on your mock performance.
For example, if your first mock score is 25, first target 30, then 35, and so on. At each stage, identify where the additional marks will come from. It could mean getting five more Quant questions right, improving RC accuracy, or making fewer mistakes in DM.
This approach is more useful for an average student than trying to suddenly reach a very high score.
There is no single ideal number of attempts for every average student. The current XAT pattern has 75 questions in Part 1, with 26 VA & RC, 21 Decision Making and 28 QA & DI, while GK has 20 questions in Part 2. Correct answers carry +1, incorrect answers carry −0.25, and there is an additional −0.10 penalty for every unattempted question after the first eight.
An average student should not decide before the exam that they must attempt, for example, 60 or 65 questions. Your attempt target should come from mock-test performance.
If you are getting many questions wrong, increasing attempts can actually reduce your score because of the 0.25-mark negative marking.
Always begin with questions where you understand the requirement and have a reasonable chance of getting the answer right.
For example, if a Quant question looks lengthy and you cannot identify the method after a reasonable first look, leave it and move ahead. The same applies to a DM set where you are unable to establish why one option is better than the others.
XAT's marking scheme gives candidates some room to leave questions unanswered because the 0.10 unattempted-question penalty applies only after the first eight unattempted questions.
An average student should therefore avoid randomly attempting difficult questions simply because they are worried about leaving them unanswered. However, this does not mean the eight-question allowance should be treated as a fixed target; use your mock data to understand your own accuracy and attempts.
After each mock, record:

Your final attempt target should come from your actual mock performance. If increasing attempts from 40 to 50 gives you more correct answers without a major increase in wrong answers, continue doing it. If the additional 10 attempts mainly produce incorrect answers, work on question selection and accuracy first.
The goal for an average student is not maximum attempts; it is maximum useful attempts.
Average students often lose marks not because they cannot learn the concepts, but because they use their preparation time poorly. They can also take help from XAT strategy by toppers. Avoiding a few common mistakes can make preparation more efficient and leave more time for the areas that actually need improvement.
Do not begin your Quant preparation with the hardest XAT questions. If your basics are weak, difficult questions can take several minutes without helping you understand the underlying concept.
Follow the progression already suggested in your preparation plan: basics → easy questions → XAT-level questions.
Decision Making needs a different approach. An option may sound sensible but still be incorrect because it does not properly address the situation.
Your preparation should include previous-year XAT questions, followed by an analysis of why your chosen option was wrong and why the correct option was better.
Taking three or four mocks every week without reviewing them is unlikely to solve your weaknesses. One mock a week can be a reasonable starting point during the early testing phase. As the exam approaches, mock frequency can increase depending on preparation level and the amount of analysis being done.
For every wrong question, ask: Did I not know the concept, calculate incorrectly, misread the question, or spend too much time?
An average student does not need to become equally strong in every topic. If you have limited preparation time, prioritise topics where you can realistically improve your accuracy.
For example, strengthen basic arithmetic before spending large amounts of time on advanced topics. Your existing preparation plan specifically recommends covering Quant basics topic-wise before moving to difficult questions.
If you make the same mistake in three mocks, simply taking another mock will not fix it. Record repeated mistakes and practise that specific area before your next test.
For example, if you repeatedly spend too long on Quant questions, work on question selection. If you repeatedly select the wrong DM option, review the reasoning behind previous-year questions. This turns mock analysis into actual score improvement.
