Careers360: What motivated you to pursue MBA? What do you aspire for?

Prakriti Kar: I had decided to go for an MBA immediately after my engineering right in my 3rd year. I felt that completing my masters in continuation with my engineering would be the most suitable option as doing an MBA would give me the managerial skills along with the technical skills which I already had. I had also realised that my career scopes would widen a lot after an MBA and hence I decided to go for it. I aspire to work in the HR department of a Corporate company, post my MBA, and wish to understand and make a difference in the corporate resource world with my technical and business acumen.

Careers360: Why you selected XLRI Jamshepur to pursue your management goals. Which other exams you appeared in?

Prakriti Kar: I was very sure to study human resource management from XLRI as it is amon the top  B-schools in HR. I did not appeared in any other managemnt, when I planned to pursue a management programme I aimed to clear XAT and made sure that my focus is set. My preparation strategy was to secure a high percentile and get admission to XLRI.

Careers360: What was your preparation strategy for XAT 2014?

Prakriti Kar: I had joined coaching class in January 2013. However I started preparing extensively in the last week of May 2013. First, I started by clearing all my concepts chapter wise for all the sections. After making my basic concepts strong, I moved on to revise everything. I concentrated more on the sections which I found difficult by giving mock tests. I believe, analysing all the test series which you give are very important as you eventually start rectifying your common mistakes and start seeing a trend in the questions, especially in English. It’s all a matter of practice. I continued giving mock tests till the day of the exam and I believe that was the reason behind my perfect time management on the day of the exam.

Careers360: Do you think Coaching or Mentoring is important to crack XAT or any other MBA entrance tests?

Prakriti Kar: Some form of coaching is helpful though not absolutely necessary. Coaching helps in giving some direction to your preparation and helps to bring you on track if you go off by any chance. However, if you are self-motivated enough to pursue your goal and have the self motivationalpassion, then coaching classes aren’t necessary.

Careers360: How did you manage XAT preparation schedule along with your graduation studies?
Prakriti Kar: I had my graduation studies along with XAT preparation. I managed both by studying regularly from the very beginning of the semester. I had to cut down on other unnecessary things and devote all my time towards studies in the months preceding XAT. Though it is tough to manage engineering studies along with an national level entrance exam like XAT, but is you have your goals set, nothing can stop you.

Careers360: Please share your preparation strategy for Quantitative Ability , English& Logical Reasoningand Essay writing separately?

Prakriti Kar: For all the sections, speed and accuracy is extremely important. Initially, I used to devote my time every day to Englishand LR equally, till I completed the whole syllabus. After that, I found out during the tests that my performance in quant was relatively weaker than the other sections. So I started devoting comparatively more time to my weaker section till all the other sections were at par. The best way to prepare is to practise with mock tests and analyse your preparation at each level.

Careers360: How did you plan and work for Decision making and General Awareness section of the paper?

Prakriti Kar: For the general awareness section I used to read the newspapers regularly, especially the editorials. They help you in the essays as well. The main trick to crack the decision making section is to have a good reading speed. I practiced on that by solving lots of practice question papers.

Careers360: What was your Time Management formula while taking the actual XAT paper?

Prakriti Kar: I was stronger in Verbal and Decision making as compared to Quant. We had total 2 hours and 20 minutes to solve the 3 sections of quant, verbal and decision making which gave around 45 minutes to each section. I started with quant, then moved on to verbal and finally to decision making. I tried to finish all the 3 sections before time so that I had around 15 minutes in the end to look up the problems which I thought were doubtful.

Careers360: What were your strong and weak areas? How did you prepare and what special efforts did you put for improving your weak areas?

Prakriti Kar: My strong areas were verbal and decision making compared to my weaker areas which wasquant. Hence I didn’t prepare for verbal and decision making specifically, other than solving practice question papers. For quant I put in more efforts by investing more time in quant as compared to the other two. I used to solve an exclusive quant paper everyday along with the usual full syllabus question paper.

Careers360: What is your advice for the MBA aspirants who will take XAT 2014?

Prakriti Kar: The key to crack XAT lies in time management. Being prepared to take all kinds of surprises is also very important as the number of questions in each section and the time limit remains a surprise each year. After getting all the topics clear, it is very important to solve multiple question papers before the actual exams. Analysing your mistakes in the mock papers and taking care not to repeat them in future is of prime importance.

Careers360: How important are Recreational activities for you. Were you involved in any of the activities besides preparing for the exam?

Prakriti Kar: Recreational activities are very important to freshen up your mind during the preparations. I used to occasionally watch movies or some TV series and used to go out with friends whenever I felt things were getting too monotonous. But it’s important to regulate your recreation during the crucial phase of preparation and ensure that you don’t end up getting diverted.

So my situation is this, i have 47% in graduation and got 80 percentile in XAT, so this is limiting my options for admissions in mba colleges. What should i do?

Rehan Alam Student Expert 2nd Mar, 2020

Dear aspirant,

Yes this will limit your options for admission in MBA colleges as most of these MBA colleges look at past academic performance of the candidate. Your percentage will definitely be a hindrance in your admission into any top IIM college or XLRI.

You can always take admission in tier 2/3 management colleges.

Hope this helps. Thank you.
