Nilkancha Badhiye: When I was at NIFT, I realized the importance of brand names in today’s scenario. I understood how vital it is to establish a company as brand in this competitive market. Pursuing an MBA programme would definitely support me to gain more insights about brand management, marketing and the managerial aspects of a business organisation. I aspire to work with FMCG and retail companies and built a strong career.
Careers360: Apart from IIFT 2013, which other MBA entrance exams you appeared for and how was your performance?
Nilkancha Badhiye: Apart from IIFT 2013, I appeared in CAT, CMAT, XAT and NMAT. My performance in all these exams was satisfactory but my aim was to crack IIFT and get admission into IIFT MBA programme.
Careers360: Why did you choose to join IIFT? Please also name other B-schools which made final admission offers to you.
Nilkancha Badhiye: IIFT is among the top 10 B schools of India and has a strong academic legacy. I decided to join IIFT because it offer specialized programme in International Business and Foreign Trade. For me, IIFT was the most preferred institute and my sole convert for the final admission.
Careers360: What was your preparation strategy for IIFT 2013?
Nilkancha Badhiye: I started preparing for IIFT in my final year. Time management was my focus, so I decided to improvise on my speed. I knew that if there is any strategy to be followed, it is the best management of Time. Speed and Accuracy is the key to success, you have to have speed along with the right answers.
Careers360: How important is Coaching or Mentoring to crack IIFT or other Management entrance tests?
Nilkancha Badhiye: The importance differs from person to person. I had to join a coaching institute because I needed guidance in mathematics, as I am from a non-engineering background. If you have joined a good coaching institute there is an advantage of getting your doubts cleared, class interaction and peer learning. However, if one is strong in basic concepts the rest of the part becomes very easy. It is also important to give mock tests and solve previous years question papers as you get very strong insights about the exam.
Careers360: How did you manage IIFT preparation schedule along with graduation studies?
Nilkancha Badhiye: I joined weekend classes at a coaching institute which was 2-4 hour session per day. So I tried to utilize that time as much as possible. Utilization of time can make you succeed in your goals. I made sure that I never missed a class and got my doubts clear. Apart from classes studying for 1-2 hours daily is enough to crack any management exam.
Careers360: Please share your preparation strategy for the English Comprehensive, General Knowledge & Awareness and Logical Reasoning & Quantitative Analysis.
Nilkancha Badhiye: I was not in touch with Mathematics for long so tackling the Quantitative Analysis section was a big challenge for me. I had to put in extra efforts in classes and mock exams. But as it is said Practice is the key to success, I practiced a lot and overcame this challenge. For English and G.K., I read newspaper, took online quizzes and referred to different vocabulary sites. There has to be a consistent effort to achieve success.
Careers360: What was your Time Management formula while taking the actual IIFT paper?
Nilkancha Badhiye: Giving mock tests helped me analyze how to divide my time for the exam. I solved my strong areas- G.K., and Reasoning section first. If you answer your strong areas first you get a bit of moral boost which helps you in solving the rest of the exam with positivity. It is advisable not to spend too much time on one question. If time permits you can always come back to it after you have gone through the entire paper. Select and solve scoring questions first.
Careers360: What were your strong and weak areas? How did you prepare and what special efforts did you put for improving your weak areas?
Nilkancha Badhiye: My strong areas were Reasoning and GK. I was very comfortable with it as I found the questions similar to NTSE level. My weak area was Quantitative Analysis, and the only solution to tackle weak section is to keep practicing.
Careers360: What is your advice for the Management aspirants who will take IIFT 2014?
Nilkancha Badhiye: Keep practicing on your weak areas. Clear your doubts and keep the basics strong. Go through previous years’ papers and attempt mock tests in simulated environment to give have an idea of time management. Stay focused during the exam, avoid negative marking and select questions wisely.
Careers360: How did you divide your timings between preparation and recreational activities? What were the activities that you did besides preparing for the exam?
Nilkancha Badhiye: One must take interests in your studies and have a curiosity to learn. There is no need to feel burdened. Besides preparing for the exams I used to take time out time for drawing and painting and also learned to play violin. I used to relax by listening to music, watching movies and television series.
Careers360: What kind of movies do you enjoy watching? Share the name of your favourite movie and the characters that inspire you.

what should be my Sectional cutoff in iift exam 2020
This is the sectional cutoff of IIFT exam 2020:
Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension 18-20
Quantitative Analysis 16-20
Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning 18-20
General Awareness (GK) 8-10
This sectional cutoff is for Delhi IIFT. So for other IIFTs it will be slightly lower.
Is iift consider your past academics record
- Hey, acccording to my opinion IIFT does not consider your past academics record . iift consider your good percentile WAT,PI and GD scores .if you are clear sectional cutoff and over all cutoff then you are eligible for shortlisted candidates .i think IIFT DELHI AND KOLKATA ARE THE GOOD CAMPUS . I THINK YOU SHOULD SCORES GOOD PERCENTILE THEN ACADEMIC RECORD DOES NOT MATTER FOR YOU FIRST YOU SHOULD GIVE TOTAL FOCUS TOWARD ENTRANCE EXAM.....
3.5 months are enough to crack CAT and IIFT exams ? Can anyone suggest me the study plan ? I am targetting maximum 97% in CAT and 145 marks in IIFT.
Sectional Division of Overall Preparation
Know your strengths along with weaknesses
Accept the importance of previous year question papers
Coaching or self-preparation
If you are preparing for CAT exam on a serious note, there won't be any problem preparing for IIFT too, provided you know the correct strategy for it! only the strategy of how you should play in the required format changes. So is the case with IIFT and other similar entrance exams apart from the CAT.
Firstly, from this year onwards, IIFT is conducted by NTA, so for the first time this year, IIFT will be conducted online just like any other MBA entrance exams! So there are two pros mainly I can think of -
- We don't have to spend our time circling the answers.
- We don't have to separately get accustomed to the paper based format from now.
This exam mainly consists of six sections -
- Reading Comprehension
- Verbal Ability
- Data Interpretation
- Logical Reasoning
- Quantitative Ability
Hope it helps
Thank you & Good Luck!!!
