CAT DILR Difficulty Trend: What Changed in the Last 5 Years?

The CAT DILR section has followed noticeable trends over the past five years, offering valuable insights for aspirants aiming for top scores. Candidates solving CAT Lrdi questions 2025 practice sets should focus on recurring themes that frequently appear in the exam. In 2021 and 2023, Table-Based DI with Missing Values challenged students with data gaps and multi-step calculations. Notable examples include the Soccer Competition (2021) and the Missing Values Table (2023), both requiring strong deduction skills.

In 2022 and 2023, the exam featured Tournament-Based LR sets, where students needed to analyse match outcomes and player rankings. The Games and Tournaments set in 2022 exemplify this style. CAT 2024 leaned heavily on Graph-Based DI, such as the Scatter Graph set, which tested the interpretation of visual data representations.

Across multiple years, Seating Arrangements continued to appear regularly, both linear and circular, with complicated placement rules. CAT 2021 and 2022 included several such sets. Additionally, Quant-Based Puzzles gained popularity in 2023 and 2024. These puzzles blended logical reasoning with arithmetic, often in the form of scheduling or resource distribution challenges.

How to Select the Right DILR Sets in CAT 2025 for Maximum Score

During CAT 2025, choosing the right DILR sets is as important as solving them. Smart selection can maximise accuracy and minimise wasted time. Aspirants should familiarise themselves with common patterns from CAT logical reasoning and data interpretation PDF guides and LRDI practice sets for CAT to build quick judgement.

  1. Scan All Sets Before Attempting
Quickly read all four sets in the DILR section to gauge difficulty. Pick the one that feels most familiar or least time-consuming. Prior practice with CAT LRDI tough sets with answers helps identify solvable sets under pressure.

  2. Spot the Question Density
Choose sets that offer 4 questions instead of 2 for better return on time. Data sets with high question density improve your score with fewer transitions between problems.

  3. Assess Familiarity and Comfort Level
If a set resembles patterns you've seen in your LRDI practice sets for CAT, prioritise it. Familiar structures such as tables, tournaments, or seating arrangements often feel more manageable under exam pressure.

  4. Avoid Overly Calculation-Heavy Sets
Steer clear of sets that demand heavy computation unless you're confident. Instead, focus on logic-based sets that yield answers with quicker analysis, as suggested in expert CAT logical reasoning and data interpretation PDFs.

  5. Test a Set with One Question First
Attempt one question from a set. If it seems logical and solvable, proceed. If it's vague or confusing, skip the set and return only if time allows.

CAT DILR 2025 Preparation Tips

Some of the efficient CAT DILR preparation tips that can be followed by the candidates to enhance their CAT DILR 2025 preparation are listed below. Keeping these preparation tips in mind and making them a part of their daily CAT 2025 study plan can do wonders for the candidate’s CAT 2025 results.

Understand the DILR Question Types

The candidates should understand the various possible types of questions that can be asked under the Data Interpretation section. This involves understanding the CAT DILR syllabus to the core. The possible types of questions that can be asked in the CAT exam under the DILR section include data interpretation through tables, bar graphs, pie charts, and logical reasoning sets like puzzles, arrangements, and grouping.

Focus on Accuracy First

While CAT time management is important, it is also necessary for the candidates to focus on accuracy first. According to the CAT marking scheme, for each wrong answer, 1 mark will be deducted. Hence, focusing on accuracy is of greater importance during the initial stages of the candidate’s DILR preparation. As they move ahead, more efforts can be put into improving their time management skills.

Practice with CAT Sample Papers

Once the candidate has completed the CAT DILR syllabus, they must start with solving the CAT previous year question papers, CAT sectional mock tests on DILR or topicwise mock tests on DILR and also try to solve as many CAT sample papers as possible. This will help the candidates adapt to the actual exam’s difficulty and improve their time management under pressure.

Learn to Select the Right Sets

This is one of the most important keys to securing the highest possible marks in the CAT DILR sections. The difficulty level of the DILR sets may be uneven on the CAT exam day. The candidates should ensure that they are able to quickly identify and attempt the easier or moderate sets first to maximise their score. This skill can only be inculcated through regular CAT DILR practice. Choosing the right set is half the battle won for the candidates.

Build a Daily Practice Habit

The Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning section of the CAT examination cannot be mastered in a day. It demands systematic and continuous practice throughout the candidate’s CAT preparation journey. The candidate must allocate a sufficient amount of time for the CAT DILR section daily and stick to it without missing. Ideally, spending 3-5 hours on the DILR section daily can be fruitful. Consistency matters. The candidates must practice daily, revise their mistakes, and keep revisiting different types of sets to strengthen their overall grasp of DILR.

CAT 2025 DILR Most Important Topics

While analysing the previous year's question papers and the latest examination trends, a few topics from the DILR section are seen to stand out. In CAT registration, you cannot create a new user ID with the same mobile number, even if you use a different email ID. Each mobile number and email can be linked to only one account. If you already registered once, the system will not accept a duplicate with that number. To register again, you must use a new mobile number and new email ID. If you lost your old login, you can recover it through the forgot password/user ID option on the CAT portal.

Yes, you can fill the CAT form even if you currently have a backlog. CAT eligibility requires you to be in your final year of graduation or already graduated backlogs don’t stop you from applying.

While filling the form:

  • Enter the aggregate percentage/CGPA of marks you have obtained up to the latest semester for which results are declared (in your case till 4th semester).

  • There will be an option to mention that you have a backlog.

  • If you clear the backlog later, you’ll just need to show the updated marks during admission.

Hello Aspirant,

Yes, you can apply for the CAT exam as a final-year student. You must declare your backlog on the online application form. You do not write about it on the final-year student certificate; that document is to certify your enrollment status. You must clear all backlogs before the final admission process to any MBA college.

Hello,

Thank you for your question!

KL- MAT syllabus: Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning, English/Verbal Ability, and General Awareness (similar to MAT/CMAT pattern).

CAT scores are valid in many private universities including KL University, but always check the year’s admission notification.

CAT vs other exams: CAT is toughest (IIMs + top B-schools), while MAT/CMAT/ATMA are relatively easier and accepted by many mid-level private universities.

Hello it will clear your doubt!
