XAT Topper Interview: Decision Making is most scoring section if answered ethically, says Preetam Modi, 99.88 percentiler
Preetam Modi an XLRI Jamshedpur student cracked XAT 2016 with 99.88 percentile and gives credit to a systematic preparation and time management strategy. According to him, the simple mantra to crack XAT is to attempt maximum questions accurately in order to get a high score. In this interview with Careers360, Preetam shares that upon going through the questions, you should first select questions to not attempt rather than the reverse method.
For Preetam, an Electrical Engineer from IIEST, Shibpur, Decision Making is the most scoring section. All you have to do is be ethical while answering the questions. He also shares the importance of practicing from previous years’ XAT papers to get a grip over the pattern and time management strategy.

Careers360: When and why did you decide to pursue management studies?
Preetam: Having worked for almost 28 months as a developer, I saw that the key to business operations of technology was the management in technology. In software, we follow a definite cycle called SDLC - Software Development Life Cycle. We lay hands on the work from the coding part. By the time we used to start working on it, 60 per cent of the work is already done. So there is very little scope for innovation left. And a well-rounded MBA will obviously increase my exposure to that and give me an idea about how the whole business functions.
Preetam: I had a percentile of 99.46 in CAT, but didn’t get calls from IIM ABC due to their huge profile based criteria. I took advice from some seniors who passed out of XLRI and other premier institutes. I got to know XLRI has produced maximum number of Indian CXOs in the industry. This is what excited me a lot to be a part of such great legacy.
Careers360: When did you start preparing for XAT?
Preetam: I started preparing seriously for CAT and XAT from the month of September. Though I had some initial exposure, the push to do something good came only during that time.
Careers360: Please share your overall preparation strategy.
Preetam: Here I will mention specifically about Decision Making. This section is a very scoring section. Please be ethical in all your answers. I practiced the past papers to analyse which option is correct and which one is wrong and more than that why so.
Careers360: What were your strong and weak areas? How did you tackle your weak section?
Preetam: I was very weak in Verbal Ability, hence I gave my maximum time there. Also I practiced specific areas of VA. I just didn’t have to lose my nerve during the exam. In QA and DM, I was confident to do well.
Careers360: What was your time management strategy?
Preetam: Since XAT is considered to be tougher than other similar exams, I decided which questions to leave very fast. I dedicated my entire time to those questions where I was confident that I could solve accurately.
Careers360: XAT underwent massive changes last year. What is your take on the new pattern?
Preetam: I think the changed pattern is good. It gives aspirants a window for calculated risk. But at the end of the day, one has to do maximum questions correctly to score maximum marks. This simple approach might help aspirants.
