This is how toppers cracked IIFT entrance test
IIFT is one of the most sought after MBA entrance exams taken by around 50,000 aspirants every year. Despite being a conventional paper pencil based exam, cracking IIFT can be quite a challenge. With just two months left for IIFT 2016, aspirants need guidance on how to prepare for the test, what strategy to follow and how to approach the test in order to secure high scores. And who can be a better guide than the toppers, who have already tread the path and successfully reached their destinations.
IIFT toppers from the past years have shared their success mantras on how they turned their weaknesses into strengths, which study and practice materials they referred and how they made the winning strategy for the exam day. To start with, the most important tip from almost every IIFT topper is to break up the study material section wise into parts and cover a little each day.
1. Systematic Preparation
Lack of prior knowledge can be a crucial factor for deciding whether or not you will crack the test. But for Barkha Jain, who secured a percentile of 99.97 in IIFT 2015, such factor cannot be a hurdle to success if you have done a systematic preparation for the test.
Managing time efficiently between all the sections is equally important along with maintaining accuracy since IIFT is generally a lengthy paper and carries sectional cutoff. Aspirants should consider proficiently completing the IIFT syllabus and then move to time bound mock tests. It is also important for the aspirants to give maximum weight-age to their weaker section during preparations.
2. Time Management
During preparations, give maximum time to your weaker section. Make sure that you are in constant touch of your strong section to make it stronger. The idea is to keep your accuracy high to avoid negative marking.
Shikhar Mahalwala a 99.77 percentiler in IIFT on time management says, “IIFT lets you attempt any section first. I started with Quantitative Aptitude and maximised my attempts there. In Verbal Ability, I focused more on accuracy and less on attempts. I did not attempt any question I was sceptical about. Make sure you fill the OMR after every 10 questions because filling it at the end is a risky affair. I finished the exam well within time and revisited the verbal section to recheck my attempts.”
3. Sectional Preparation
One must have basic conceptual clarity for each section of the test. On her preparation for GK section, which according to her is the most important section of IIFT, Akanksha Sharma, 99.67 percentiler says that one must follow a time-bound approach. She says. “For GK, I regularly read a business daily. Overall I always followed a time bound approach during the preparation. Since it is difficult to attempt all the questions, I also honed my judgment skills of evaluating the difficulty level of a particular question and moving to the next in order to optimize time,” she adds.
For English section, during his IIFT preparation phase, Anshuman Vijayvargia scored 54.76 in IIFT focused on improving his weaker section- Vocabulary by practicing with flash cards. According to him, working on the basics, keeping focus and practicing weaker section are important factors to crack any national level entrance exam.
The Logical Reasoningsection is all about concepts and practice. Attempt a variety of questions during preparation so that at the time of actual test many questions will seem familiar. This section seems time-consuming but if you have the gist of how to go along a particular set, it becomes a walk in the park.
4. Refer to right books and study materials
While preparing for the test, Ujjwal Kumar, 99.89 percentiler referred to section wise books to study the basics of each section. He kept himself updated with the happenings around the world along with preparing from the last five years’ news and events to crack the GK section. He devoted around 1 to 1.5 hours on an average strictly towards studies for IIFT preparation.
For Quants he studied from Quantum CAT and the coaching institute materials. As far as English goes one can do Word Power made easy by Normal Lewis. Build the habit of reading newspaper daily that will help to prepare for two sections, General Awareness and Reading Comprehension.
5. Mock test
There is no fact denying that taking as many Mock tests as you can, can lead you towards your dream B-school. Mock Tests prepare you for the exam in the most appropriate manner. You get insight about the actual exam and types of questions to prepare for.
Satyaki Mascharak cracked IIFT with a score of 51. He suggests, “The regular Mocks are like doubt clearing sessions, which help every aspirant. They actually give a pull which is required to motivate a person”.
Another topper, Sahil Shirbhate explains the importance of Mock tests. He says, “Solve previous years’ question papers in the weeks before the exam. It gives a fair idea of the pattern of the exam and enough time to adjust your strategy accordingly. It is very important to have a fair idea about what type of questions are covered in the exam and practice those questions with a dedication”.

what should be my Sectional cutoff in iift exam 2020
This is the sectional cutoff of IIFT exam 2020:
Verbal Ability & Reading Comprehension 18-20
Quantitative Analysis 16-20
Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning 18-20
General Awareness (GK) 8-10
This sectional cutoff is for Delhi IIFT. So for other IIFTs it will be slightly lower.
Is iift consider your past academics record
- Hey, acccording to my opinion IIFT does not consider your past academics record . iift consider your good percentile WAT,PI and GD scores .if you are clear sectional cutoff and over all cutoff then you are eligible for shortlisted candidates .i think IIFT DELHI AND KOLKATA ARE THE GOOD CAMPUS . I THINK YOU SHOULD SCORES GOOD PERCENTILE THEN ACADEMIC RECORD DOES NOT MATTER FOR YOU FIRST YOU SHOULD GIVE TOTAL FOCUS TOWARD ENTRANCE EXAM.....
3.5 months are enough to crack CAT and IIFT exams ? Can anyone suggest me the study plan ? I am targetting maximum 97% in CAT and 145 marks in IIFT.
Sectional Division of Overall Preparation
Know your strengths along with weaknesses
Accept the importance of previous year question papers
Coaching or self-preparation
If you are preparing for CAT exam on a serious note, there won't be any problem preparing for IIFT too, provided you know the correct strategy for it! only the strategy of how you should play in the required format changes. So is the case with IIFT and other similar entrance exams apart from the CAT.
Firstly, from this year onwards, IIFT is conducted by NTA, so for the first time this year, IIFT will be conducted online just like any other MBA entrance exams! So there are two pros mainly I can think of -
- We don't have to spend our time circling the answers.
- We don't have to separately get accustomed to the paper based format from now.
This exam mainly consists of six sections -
- Reading Comprehension
- Verbal Ability
- Data Interpretation
- Logical Reasoning
- Quantitative Ability
Hope it helps
Thank you & Good Luck!!!
