Currently pursuing his Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGPM), Koustav in this interview with Careers360 share tips and strategies to crack the GD-PI-WAT of the IIM admission process.
He shares key aspects of a Group Discussion, which one must prepare to outperform the group. Further, he explains the personality traits which the interview panel of the admission process seeks into a candidate, and how WAT should be structured for enhancing your admission chances in Top B-school or IIM’s.
Read here to know about the GD-PI-WAT challenges and strategies.
Careers360: Tell us about a few key aspects to be covered in GD.
Koustav: In order to tackle the group discussion, one needs a thorough preparation of on some key aspect, e.g. Indian economy status of past five years including GDP, GNP, Per Capita Income, HDI, GINI co-efficient, FDI, FII etc. One needs to list down all the important policies taken by the Govt. in the recent past. This has to be the starting point. Apart from this the candidate can also prepare a list of GD topics of previous year of various B-schools as that would give a definite direction to the preparation.
Careers360: How to tackle the Group discussion of B-school admission process?
Koustav: Besides the knowledge part about current affairs, one has to practice speaking atleast twice, to make an impression. There is no such thing as one who starts gets more points. But then again, if the GD is of 10 min one has to enter within the first 5 min. Important thing to remember in your GD is that whenever you enter, form your arguments, structure your thought process and be clear on the topic itself. Do not speak random things just for the sake of speaking. Also, do not make a very long subjective argument. Your argument should catch the attention of the remaining participants.

Careers360: What are the key personality traits that the interview panel looks in a candidate during the Personal Interview rounds?
Koustav: One of the most important things to keep in mind is to keep a smiling face all throughout the interview. Being humble is another very important aspect. Most professors take a lot of pride in their institution and profession and that is why it is important to not speak anything derogatory about any B-school, rather prepare yourself by learning about the institute's history. The history, which if discussed can give a positive impression on the panel. The panel seek confidence, knowledge and your aspirations. They want the candidates to be focussed and determined about the professional course they would be pursuing.
Apart from this, one has to remember that throughout the interview you have to be very clear about why you are going for an MBA, as questions are indirectly asked to know the intent of aspirant and also about his future plans etc. Regardless of experience, one should carry a comprehensive knowledge about his/her company, sector, current challenges, future growth prospects of both company and sector, competitor companies, etc.
Careers360: What should be the strategy to clear the PI round of the admission process?
Koustav: The strategy is to speak what you know, do not act smart, and be thorough about the work you have done. Though it is important to bear in mind that if asked about ones professional details, one has to bring forth the business aspect more than the technical details of the job. Example, one can mention and lay stress on the fact that one has been a part of international client meetings and has also led a team towards the successful completion of the project.
Be clear, smile, honest, direct and prepared with the knowledge about your work.
Careers360: WAT is the third step of the admission process, how a candidate is analysed on the basis of WAT?
Koustav: WAT preparation should not be taken for granted, as it is also an important factor of scoring a candidate. During WAT, a candidate is scored on the basis of not only his writing skills but how he manage to structure and compile the data.
It is checked through WAT, the thought process and structure, and how one builds an argument in their writing. Always remember, avoid arguments which are based on qualitative factors, always support and back up your arguments with quantitative data points. For example, if you want to say entrepreneurship spirit is poor in India and business environment is still lagging behind, then you could back it up by mentioning that India ranks 134th in ease of doing business out of 189 countries. That would serve two purposes, one, it would indicate that the candidate is pretty well read and second, the candidate know what he is writing and is simply not roaming around the bushes.
Careers360: Any tips, guidance or suggestions for the students who would be appearing in the GD-PI-WAT rounds of B-school’s?
Koustav: Keep a note of suggestions which you receive, at a point anything can be helpful. Most, yet one needs to be honest during the interview and needs to strike a balance between being overly aggressive and too submissive during the GD’s. You should be humble enough to accept another’s point of view. Also it is an advantage if you can read a couple of books on management like Tipping point, Blink etc.
Develop a thorough knowledge about your hobby. Last but not the least maintain proper eye contact and a smiling face all throughout the interview. Develop your GK and current affairs, and do not limit yourself.

can a ews category student apply for private medical college? and is the fees same for gen cat. and ews cat. student for private medical college?
The EWS category is an official reservation category that needs to be considered for admission into every college. So college consider EWS category also as other category. You can surely apply for private medical College.
Most of the colleges doesn't have fees as per the reservation. The fees seems to be same for every student. There might be some college that may offer scholarship to reserved category students .
Hope that helps.
