In this interview of the series, he further suggests understanding the importance of sectional cut-off and focus on attempting questions right, rather than answering the entire section.
While preparing for his weaker section- QA, Avishek focused on practising as many questions on arithmetic questions along with algebra and statistics. Read his interview below to know the tips to crack XAT 2016. .

Careers360: What were your initial thoughts behind pursuing MBA?
Avishek: I wanted to sharpen my skills to help change the current climate and make the Indian human resource profile as one of the best in the world. For that, there is no better place of learning than XLRI. Having obtained direct converts to both the HRM and BM programmes of XLRI, there was no hesitation in choosing the former.
Careers360: How was the overall experience of appearing in XAT 2015?
Avishek: It was a very comforting atmosphere. The pressure of scoring well is always there, but once I found my rhythm it became a matter of time management and selective answering.
Careers360: Share your preparation strategy for the Quantitative Ability, Decision Making and English Language & Logical Reasoning separately?
Avishek: For Quantitative Ability, I prepared using my Erudite Material provided during my coaching classes and from 10 and 12 level books. From my previous years’ experience, I had realised that QA wasn’t about speed as much as it was about accuracy, and so instead of trying to cover the entire syllabus, I focused on my strong areas which included arithmetic, algebra and statistics.
For Decision Making, it was about practice and practice. For me this is one of the sections that put XAT in a different league than the rest MBA entrance exams. It makes you think on your feet with situational analysis. Practice Company based examples as they come up the most.
English Language and Logical Reasoning were my forte and as such, my preparation wasn’t as strenuous in those areas compared to QA or DM. Basically, have a good understanding of the structure of the English Grammar and practice as much as you can – especially the ‘exceptions to the rule’ problems. For Logical Reasoning, practice the different types of problems and understand the process of reaching conclusions and it becomes quite simple.
Careers360: What was your Time Management formula for the XAT?
Avishek: The trick to XAT is that it isn’t how many you attempt; it’s how well you do the ones you attempt. Accuracy is the key factor here and there will be sacrifices made. I had to allot time I would normally reserve for Decision Making on QA and despite the lower sectional percentile in the earlier, I was able to improve my QA sectional percentile quite significantly.
Careers360: What were your strong and weak areas? How did you tackle your weak area in the exam?
Avishek: My strong areas were English and LR and I was reasonably good in Decision Making. My weak area was Quantitative Ability, especially probability.
Instead of trying to optimize my scores in my strong areas, I gave a good chunk of my time to QA where accuracy instead of quantity became the key.
Careers360: After the exam, how you prepared for the PI-WAT rounds?
Avishek: I had mock GD sessions at one of the coaching, which really helped me brush up on the format and how to interact in a group setting. An in-depth knowledge in current affairs and issues related to the course you’re undertaking are a must.
Both my HR and BM interviews were based on current events related to human resource management. Keeping a cool head, listening and giving good points are some of the key factors that helped me contribute well to the discussion in both cases.
Careers360: How did you prepare for your PI? What are the key factors that influence your selection at PI stage?
Avishek: Ultimately it all comes down to explaining why you want to do an MBA, and the skills you have equipped through your education and experiences. Do not lie to the panel. They are seasoned veterans and they will grill you on every word you utter. Just be true to yourself.
While in my HR interview, they focused more on why MBA, in my BM interview, they were more interested in how my prior experience could contribute to my learning at XLRI.
Careers360: Your message to this year XAT aspirants?
Avishek: XAT is not about speed, it is about accuracy. Practice, practice, and practice. Focus on your strong areas but understand that sectional cut-offs are there and so allot more time to sections you may be facing difficulty with. Two or three correct answers can make all the difference. Best of luck and hope to see you at XLRI next year.
And finally, do not worry about past academic records or lack of work experience, XLRI is firmly in the present and now.
