CAT negative marking for the IIM MBA exam involves deducting marks from the total score a candidate obtains in the CAT exam. The CAT negative marking is levied for incorrect answers that the candidate marked. The negative marking in CAT is a way to ensure that the candidates only attempt the questions that they are of utmost sure about and reduce guesswork. It also tests the decision-making ability of a candidate given the stakes are placed high enough, as a mere difference of 2 to 3 marks can greatly impact the overall percentile in the CAT exam

The CAT negative marking scheme in the CAT exam pattern states that for every incorrect answer that is marked by the candidate, 1 mark will be deducted from the total score that the candidate gets before the normalization. For example, if a candidate has a raw score of 100 in the CAT 2024 before normalization but has marked 5 incorrect answers, then the total score will drop down to 95 (5 marks deducted for negative marking). A summarised version of the CAT marking scheme is given below.

Calculating the CAT negative marking is easy. Just count the number of questions that are marked incorrectly and reduce the same amount of marks from the total score. The score thus obtained will be the CAT score after negative marking. This would be the score for which normalization would be done.
NOTE: There is no negative mark for non-MCQs.
The CAT negative marking is different from the CAT normalization process. The CAT normalization process involves adjusting the scores of the candidates appearing in the different shifts of the CAT exam according to the difficulty level of the respective shifts. On the other hand, the CAT negative marking is part of the CAT marking scheme where 1 mark is deducted for every wrong answer marked by the candidate from the total score obtained.
Yes. The CAT negative marking is upheld in the CAT exam. For every answer marked incorrect by a candidate, 1 mark will be deducted. For every correct answer, 3 marks are awarded. No marks are deducted for questions left unattempted by the candidate.
The CAT score being in the negative territory is a rare event. However, given the context of the CAT negative marking, where 1 mark is deducted for every wrong answer, a candidate marking most of the attempted questions with the wrong option can get a negative score in the CAT exam.
There is no deduction of any marks if a candidate skips a question or leaves it unattempted by the end of the examination. The negative marking is only done for the questions that are marked incorrectly by the candidate resulting in a deduction of 1 mark for every wrong answer.
A good CAT score will depend on the college that a candidate aims for. If the goal is to pursue an MBA from IIMs then a good score would be percentile between 98-99.9. Other than IIMs a percentile between 90-99 would be considered good enough.

Hello dear,
The CAT exam requires a significant amount of time for preparation, including brushing up on basic concepts and practicing advanced problem-solving. Starting too early can feel overwhelming and may not be sustainable with other academic commitments.
The CAT exam requires a level of focus and maturity that is not always present in class 9. Starting preparation at this stage can be challenging to maintain. At class 9, you're primarily focused on learning foundational concepts. So you just need to boost your fundamentals by practicing more and more at class 9 because the Quantitative Aptitude section of CAT syllabus includes all the topics of Mathematics from Class 9 to 10 such as Arithmetic, Geometry, Algebra, Trigonometry and Mensuration.
