Careers360: What was your XAT 2020 overall and sectional percentile? Apart from XAT, which other entrances you appeared for and what were your percentiles?

Vandan Shah:

My XAT scores were:

  • Overall: 99.704

  • Quantitative ability and Data Interpretation : 99.748

  • Decision Making: 97.841

  • Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension: 77.345

Apart from XAT, I gave Common Admission Test (CAT) 2019 where I scored a 99.24 percentile.

Careers360: When did you start preparing for XAT? Please share in detail your month-wise preparation strategy you followed.

Vandan Shah: This was my second attempt at XAT. Previously I scored 97.1 percentile. I had a call from XLRI BM but couldn't convert it. So basically I started preparing for XAT 2020 from last year. But you have to be in constant touch and practice as the format and pattern of the test is quite challenging and different from other entrance exams.

I practiced a lot from past year XAT question papers. Apart from that regularly giving the mocks helped me decide on how much time do I need to dedicate to each section.

QA and DI : Pretty much similar to other exams like CAT so just practicing questions can help you get the job done

VARC: This is a tad tougher than other exams and a lot of questions are inference based as you can see from the past trends. So the key is to devote a quality time while reading those passages and comprehend them well.

DM : This is a make or break section according to me. I repeatedly solved past year papers and analysed how my thinking was different from or aligning with the answer key.

Careers360: What is your take on XAT test pattern? Should the authorities switch to the previous pattern or the changed pattern is good?

Vandan Shah: XAT exam pattern was quite unique and apart from the numerical and verbal ability of a candidate it also tests one's business understanding under different scenarios and circumstances.

I gave around 3-4 mocks before the exam day and the key was to analyse each and every single question that I attempted and try solving the ones which I couldn't do in the stipulated time.

Careers360: How did you manage your time during the test? What were your strong and weak areas? How did you tackle your weak area of the test?

Vandan Shah: This can depend on person to person and my answer may not be suitable for everybody. But still I would give it a go and say I played more to my strengths this time

From the mocks that I gave I realized if I should devote some more time in QA I can score more in this section.

In the first 40-45 minutes I was done with DM. Then I went onto 4 RC's because my mind was still fresh and I could've not concentrated well enough had I attempted it later in 20-25 minutes.

After that I gave a good time to QA and ensured 18-19 marks in my kitty.

In the last 10 mins I just attempted remaining verbal ability questions to just be safe of clearing the sectional cutoffs

Talking about my weakest point, VARC has been my weakest point as my result clearly depicts that.

Careers360: Your message/tip for this year’s XAT aspirants?

Vandan Shah: Stay calm and composed and don't press the panic button ( Old cliche but very true). And trust me this I have been telling from my past experiences and not somebody's words.

Keep solving past year papers and properly analyse every mock that you give. Dedication, hardwork and smartly handling all the sections in a unique exam like XAT will guarantee you a good percentile!!

So my situation is this, i have 47% in graduation and got 80 percentile in XAT, so this is limiting my options for admissions in mba colleges. What should i do?

Rehan Alam Student Expert 2nd Mar, 2020

Dear aspirant,

Yes this will limit your options for admission in MBA colleges as most of these MBA colleges look at past academic performance of the candidate. Your percentage will definitely be a hindrance in your admission into any top IIM college or XLRI.

You can always take admission in tier 2/3 management colleges.

Hope this helps. Thank you.
