As mentioned above, to get admission in IIMs, each IIM releases its minimum required sectional cut off. It is mandatory for all students selected for further rounds to meet the minimum CAT cutoff. Eligible IIM CAT cut off will be released before CAT result is declared. The table given below shows category wise sectional CAT cut offs along with overall CAT percentile released by ABC IIMs for CAT 2023 exam.
Listed below are some of the key factors considered by IIMs for determining CAT cutoff.
1. Difficulty level of the question paper
This is one of the main reasons why CAT 2024 is so important. The greater the difficulty level of the CAT question paper, the cutoff will be lower, and vice-versa.
180+ Companies | Highest CTC 15 LPA | Average CTC 7.5 LPA | Ranked as Platinum Institute by AICTE for 6 years in a row | Awarded Best Business School of the Year
NAAC ‘A++’ Grade | AACSB Accredited | Ranked #7th best University | H-CTC 21.90 LPA | Avg CTC: 8.23 LPA
2. Number of Test Takers
The total number of candidates appearing in IIM CAT 2024 will have an impact on the CAT cutoff. This will have a direct relationship, i.e. higher CAT test-takers will lead to a higher IIM CAT cutoff, while lower CAT test-takers will have a lower CAT cutoff 2024.
3. Seat availability
The number of seats available at the respective IIMs is also affected by the CAT 2024 cut off. For example, if any IIM has limited seats, the published cutoff of CAT 2024 will be higher for selecting candidates.
4. The reputation of the Institute
Renowned institutes ranked under the NIRF Management Rankings will set their cut offs higher.
5. Last year's CAT cutoff trends
The CAT cut off for IIM is based on the previous year’s cut offs released by IIMs. The CAT 2024 cutoff maybe somewhere around past cutoff trends.

IIM candidates should be aware of the difference between the two types of CAT cut offs that play an important role in the admission process. There are two types of cut offs: Qualifying CAT cut off for IIM and Final CAT cut Off (IIM Call cut off). Below we have listed the differences between the two:
CAT Qualifying Cutoff 2024 | CAT Final Cutoff 2024 |
---|---|
Also known as the IIM eligibility cut off for IIM shortlist cut off, these are the minimum marks a candidate must score, so he/ she will be eligible for an interview call from IIMs (WAT/ GD-PI round). | Also referred to as IIM call cut off, this is the minimum percentage score set by IIMs to select candidates for the WAT/ GD-PI round. |
Meeting the qualifying MBA admission cutoff does not mean that the candidate will be selected for the WAT/ GD-PI round. | Meeting the final CAT cut off 2024 does not mean that the candidate will be selected for admission. |
The qualifying IIM CAT cutoff is fixed before the CAT result announcement. | The final cutoff will be fixed after the CAT 2024 results are announced. |
Qualifying CAT Percentile for IIM is announced by each campus in the announcement of the admission criteria and selection process for that academic year. | The final IIM CAT cutoff 2024 has not been officially announced yet by any IIM or other top MBA institutes. |
Qualifying IIM cutoff 2024 is over the 90 percentile for all IIMs. | The final CAT cutoff will be 99+ percentile for all the best IIMs and 95+ percent for the new IIMs. |
The qualifying cutoff contains the CAT sectional cutoff marks and the overall cut off. | The final CAT 2024 cutoff contains a sectional cutoff in CAT and CAT percentile for IIM. |
The qualifying CAT cut off for SC is fixed. The CAT cut off for IIM for OBC/ General is high. | The final CAT cut off is fixed category-wise. For General category male students with engineering backgrounds, the final cut off is high as compared to reserved-category students, female students, and those with non-engineering backgrounds. |

The candidates who are confused about when and how to start the CAT preparation? are advised to check the strategy and tips followed by the CAT toppers.
After receiving the invitation for WAT/ GD-PI round, candidates must present the following documents.
According to the IIM admission process, the candidates will be selected for the respective IIMs for the GD/ WAT/ PI rounds.

The student cannot join the postgraduate MA program directly in the second year of the MA after completing the MBA.
Universities generally expect students to begin the first year of a masters' program even though they had qualifications at the level of a bachelor's degree. The university's curriculum along with the courses are planned to give an in-depth knowledge of the subjects.
But you could opt for:
Postgraduate Studies:
Research Career: In case research interests you, then you can pursue a Ph.D. in your specific interest.
Specialized Master's Programs: Find any specific master's course that supports the career goal.
Professional Certifications:
Make a professional certification in CFA, CA, or FRM to enhance the professional skills and better opportunities in the career field.
Job Entry via MBA
After gaining an MBA from a renowned institution, it's possible to get entry into the corporate world where the diversity in the career field is assured.
In the end, it would depend on what you would like and what you are particularly interested in. It will be better if you take a suggestion from your academic advisor or career counselor.
Hello Pratik,
If your family income exceeds 8 LPA, it will affect your eligibility for the NC-OBC category under the CAT reservation rules. The NC-OBC category requires that the family income should be below 8 LPA to qualify. If you anticipate that your income will exceed this threshold, you should update your status and notify the CAT authorities .
Here's what you can do:
Email the CAT authorities
: Inform them about the potential change in your income status and request to be considered under the
General
category, if applicable. You should do this before the examination or any further processing, as your eligibility for the OBC category depends on the income criteria.
Documents and Proof
: Make sure you have a valid
OBC certificate
and any relevant documentation regarding your family income, in case they require verification. Also, be aware that if your income exceeds 8 LPA, you might need to apply under the
General
category, as the OBC-NC reservation is no longer applicable.
General Category Consideration : If your application is accepted as General, you will be evaluated based on the General category criteria, including cutoffs and ranking.
To summarize, notifying the CAT authorities is the correct approach to avoid discrepancies later, and if your income is above the threshold, you will be treated as a General candidate for the admissions process.
