Ideal Structure of an XAT Essay

Writing a good essay is as much about organisation as it is about content. A proper structure enables you to put across your ideas in an organised manner that is easy to follow and understand. Following a proper structure will help the marker follow your arguments and understand your viewpoint

    Introduction

The introduction to your essay should give an overview of what the essay is about. It should have a hook or a statement or definition that leads into the main argument of the essay. The introduction should end with your thesis statement that gives the viewpoint on the subject that you are going to argue in the essay without giving away too much detail.

Body Paragraph 1 – Introduce your main argument to support the thesis

The first paragraph of the body of the essay should introduce your primary argument for the thesis statement. Elaborate on this argument with relevant facts, figures, current events, business examples, or anecdotal examples. This paragraph, and indeed all the other body paragraphs, should then present relevant information about the topic in a cohesive and logical manner.

Body Paragraph 2 – Add other arguments supporting your thesis

Add arguments to support your thesis statement in the following paragraphs. Each paragraph should present a separate viewpoint or example that supports the thesis. It is important to use transitional sentences to ensure that the paragraphs flow logically.

Counter-Argument (if allowed by essay question)

Present a counter-argument in a paragraph and refute the same in the next paragraphs with arguments supporting your own viewpoint. This is very important as it shows that you have your own arguments and are also aware of the viewpoint of the opposition.

    Use examples

This is the next and one of the most important steps that you should take while writing the essay. Try to use relevant examples and data as well when you are writing an essay based on business, history, polity and current affairs. This shows that you have done your research and are well aware of facts and figures.

    Conclusion

Conclude the essay by restating the arguments presented in the body paragraphs in a summarised form. The conclusion does not present any new information but ties up all arguments with a neat concluding remark.
