cat-score-card-2023%20(1)

Candidates should note that the CAT 2024 scorecards can be downloaded from the official IIMCAT website only and will be available till December 31, 2025.

IIMs will begin the shortlisting process for MBA/ PGDM admissions in the 2025-27 batch based on the CAT 2024 cut offs to select candidates for the Written Aptitude Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI) round. This process will start in the first week of January 2025.

How is CAT Percentile Calculated?

The calculation of the CAT percentile includes three steps:

As per the CAT exam pattern over the years, three marks are awarded for each correct answer and one mark is deducted for every incorrect answer. No marks are deducted for wrong answers in non-MCQ-type questions.

Steps to Calculate IIM CAT Percentile

  1. Each candidate’s score is first evaluated section-wise and then the overall score is arrived at by totaling the section-wise scores.
  2. Thereafter, these section-wise and overall scores (raw scores) are normalized to arrive at a scaled CAT score.
  3. The normalized scores are converted into percentiles which are reported on the CAT scorecard 2024.

Check out the CAT Score vs Percentile here

CAT Percentile Calculation 2024

To calculate the CAT percentile 2024, scaled scores are used. The process of calculating percentiles for the CAT 2024 result remains the same for all sections. The more percentile the greater the chances of selection. The given below process will be used to calculate the CAT 2024 percentile.

  • Step 1: Take the total number of candidates who appeared for IIM CAT in the morning, afternoon, and evening shifts.
    • Total no. of candidates = N
  • Step 2: Assign rank = R, based on the scaled scores obtained by candidates in VARC (can take any of the three) sections of all candidates who will appear for CAT 2024. If two or more candidates obtain identical scaled scores in the VARC section, identical ranks will be assigned to them.
    • For example, if two candidates obtain the highest scaled CAT score in the VARC section, then both candidates will be assigned rank 1. Candidate(s) obtaining the second-highest scaled score in the VARC section will be assigned a rank of 3.
  • Step 3: Now calculate the percentile score (P) of a candidate with rank (r) in the VARC section as shown below:
    • P=((N-r)/ N )*100
  • Step 4: Now round off the calculated percentile score (P). This can be done up to two decimal points. For example, all CAT percentile scores greater than or equal to 99.995 are rounded off to 100, all percentile scores greater than or equal to 99.985 but strictly less than 99.995 are rounded off to 99.99, and so on.

What is the CAT Normalization Process?

As the CAT for the MBA exam is conducted in different slots, a normalization process is used wherein the marks of every candidate are scaled to bring equity to the marking process. The normalization process of CAT is an established practice followed over the years to assess the performance of a candidate across multiple sessions.

What are the parameters taken into consideration for CAT normalization?

  • Highest score
  • Lowest score
  • Mean score
  • Median score
  • Top 10 percentiles
  • Lowest 10 percentiles

CAT 2024 results will be prepared based on normalized score and CAT percentile will be calculated only after raw CAT scores are scaled and normalized.

What after CAT Result 2024?

After the CAT 2024 results are declared, qualified candidates will have common doubts about what after the CAT result. candidates who meet the minimum CAT cutoff score will be intimated by the respective IIMs for further selection rounds. Each IIM sends interview letters to the shortlisted candidates directly via email or registered/speed post. The criteria for shortlisting vary across IIMs.

Normally the IIMs follow the selection procedure which includes the following rounds- Written Ability Test (WAT), Group Discussion (GD), and Personal Interview (PI) rounds. The new IIMs have a common selection procedure, that is, a Common Admission Process (CAP) for which separate registration is done once the minimum CAP cutoff percentile is released by the CAP conducting authority.

The final selection of the candidates for MBA admissions will be done based on various parameters such as CAT score, academic history, work experience, academic diversity, gender diversity, and performance in WAT/GD-PI.

The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) admission process consists of three stages. Check out the brief description of IIM admission process 2025.

  • Candidates screening on the basis of CAT exam score and academic record
  • Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI) round
  • Final selection of candidates for MBA/ PGP/ PGDM admission

The top IIMs conducts admission process individually, where the other 11 new/ baby IIMs conduct Common Admission Process (CAP) jointly.

CAT Cut Off 2024

The minimum marks required by a candidate in the CAT result 2024 to make it to the next selection rounds is called the CAT cutoff. There are several factors considered before calculating the CAT cutoff. These factors include- the difficulty level of the CAT question paper, the number of candidates appearing for the CAT exam, seat intake, previous year CAT cutoffs, etc.

Candidates can meanwhile check the previous year's CAT cut off. The CAT merit list 2024 is the list of candidates who have qualified the CAT cutoff and are eligible for the next stage of the admission process. The student cannot join the postgraduate MA program directly in the second year of the MA after completing the MBA.

Universities generally expect students to begin the first year of a masters' program even though they had qualifications at the level of a bachelor's degree. The university's curriculum along with the courses are planned to give an in-depth knowledge of the subjects.

But you could opt for:

Postgraduate Studies:

Research Career: In case research interests you, then you can pursue a Ph.D. in your specific interest.

Specialized Master's Programs: Find any specific master's course that supports the career goal.

Professional Certifications:

Make a professional certification in CFA, CA, or FRM to enhance the professional skills and better opportunities in the career field.

Job Entry via MBA

After gaining an MBA from a renowned institution, it's possible to get entry into the corporate world where the diversity in the career field is assured.

In the end, it would depend on what you would like and what you are particularly interested in. It will be better if you take a suggestion from your academic advisor or career counselor.

Hello Pratik,

If your family income exceeds 8 LPA, it will affect your eligibility for the NC-OBC category under the CAT reservation rules. The NC-OBC category requires that the family income should be below 8 LPA to qualify. If you anticipate that your income will exceed this threshold, you should update your status and notify the CAT authorities .

Here's what you can do:

  1. Email the CAT authorities : Inform them about the potential change in your income status and request to be considered under the General category, if applicable. You should do this before the examination or any further processing, as your eligibility for the OBC category depends on the income criteria.

  2. Documents and Proof : Make sure you have a valid OBC certificate and any relevant documentation regarding your family income, in case they require verification. Also, be aware that if your income exceeds 8 LPA, you might need to apply under the General category, as the OBC-NC reservation is no longer applicable.

  3. General Category Consideration : If your application is accepted as General, you will be evaluated based on the General category criteria, including cutoffs and ranking.

To summarize, notifying the CAT authorities is the correct approach to avoid discrepancies later, and if your income is above the threshold, you will be treated as a General candidate for the admissions process.

Hello,

Yes, you can also join IIMs two years after graduation, depending upon the justification in interviews and your performance in entrance exams. If you are not sure about CAT, try those other management exams less hard:

Common Management Admission Test: Easier than CAT; 4-5 months of continuous preparation will suffice.

MAT : Much easier and takes place thrice a year.

SNAP (Symbiosis National Aptitude Test): A bit easier than CAT, apt for Symbiosis Institutes.

Xavier Aptitude Test or XAT : Hence, easier than CAT but the unique decision-making section.

Use exams like CMAT and MAT as a challenge to be competitively prepared. This can be given about 4-5 months, along with a few rounds of mock tests and smart studying.

M/s Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited, one of the top four audit and accounting firms in the world with headquarters at London, UK, and with an operational presence in 153 countries, hires Management Trainees (MT) from all the premier management institutes of India thrice every year, in the months of January, May and September.
