Excerpts from the interview:
Q: What motivated you to join IIFT?
A: I was looking to do my masters in business and while researching the B-schools to apply to, I came across IIFT. It is counted amongst the top 10 B-schools of India. While that was a good enough reason, I did further research and came to the conclusion that IIFT offers differentiation in form of MBA (IB) that most other premier institutes do not. The location of the B-School as well as the placement reports were enough motivation to seriously apply for IIFT.
Q: Which other MBA entrance exams did you take?
A: Apart from IIFT entrance exam, I took CAT, XAT and NMAT.
Q: Which other B-school calls did you convert and why did you choose IIFT over those B-schools?
A: I converted NMIMS and all the new IIMs. I didn’t go for NMIMS because of the sheer batch size intake and also I got banking which may or may not have been upgraded. I chose IIFT over newer IIMs because it’s a 50 year old institution. It has a long standing history of providing quality management education and exposure in the international business. That will take some time for the new IIMs to catch up to.
Q: How different is IIFT entrance exam compared to other MBA entrance exams that you took? Did you take separate preparation for IIFT?
A: No, I did not do any separate preparation for IIFT because I was anyway reading newspapers and I like to keep up with what’s happening. So, GK wasn’t too much of an issue. And for other sections, CAT preparation sufficed.
Q: Share your experience of IIFT GD, PI and SoP or any other selection criteria for IIFT?
A: My GD topic at IIFT was around the lines of ‘Should recruiters give the maximum weightage to the MBA degree or individual talent?’ IIFT GD was a great experience as there was enough airtime for everyone. While that may sound easier but it’s not because now you have to make sense and pitch in great points. Also, at any time, the evaluating professors may make anyone from the group act as the moderator. So, it’s different in that aspect compared to other top B-School GD experience.
The form which you have to fill once you clear the written exams and before the GD PI rounds is very important as your entire interview may revolve around that. Though that did not happen with me, a lot of people had that experience. I just made sure that I proof read my form multiple times and got other people’s opinions as well.
IIFT interview is taken by our professors. They are very senior faculty and made me feel very comfortable. Questions were the usual ones revolving around why MBA, why IIFT, my hobbies etc.
Q: While exams like CAT, MAT, TISSNET and now IRMA are going computer based, do you think it IIFT should also convert the traditional paper pencil based test to computer based/online?
A: Well that is always an option, but I don’t think there is any glitch in our process even now. In my opinion, why look for a solution where isn’t a problem. Any which way It may not make too much of a difference.
Q: How is life at IIFT? What according to you makes the institute different?
A: Joining IIFT has been one of the best decisions of my life in terms of life experiences. Life at IIFT never has a dull moment. Though it’s immensely pressurizing at times because we have one of the heaviest course load across all B-schools, there is always time to have fun and have plenty of it. There are so many clubs and activities always going on. Being a small batch size, all of us know everyone else. You step out of your hostel alone; you can always find a familiar face to talk to. And that I think is the USP of IIFT, the small batch size and the small campus.
Q: According to you, how important is the gender or academic diversity in a class of MBA? Do you think it is justified to award extra marks to female or non engineering candidates to maintain diversity in the class?
A: While gender diversity is important, it is more important to respect talent and competence at post graduate level. If we are trying to induce gender diversity, MBA isn’t the place to do it. Primary and secondary schools are. We make the crème de le crème of India’s educated population. Diluting quality at this stage is a strict no – no. This is another great thing about IIFT. The process is extremely transparent.
Q: What are your career aspirations? Where do you want to see yourself five years down the line?
A: I am interested in a career in marketing. Five years down the lane, I see myself having finished my necessary sales stint and in a decision making role in marketing in a firm of good repute. During the first few years of my career, I only want to learn, learn and keep learning.
Q: What is your advice to the IIFT aspirants who would be taking the exam on 24th November?
A: This is a generic advice for any exam, the more you panic the worse you perform. Be absolutely confident of the hard work you have put in. For IIFT specially, make sure you attempt a decent number of questions in GK because that can be a deal breaker. Do NOT leave any section under attempted in case they decide on sectional cut offs. Once you have uniformly attempted all sections, return to the section which is your strength and maximize your score there.
