Q: What were the factors which made you aim towards IIFT?
A: I always wanted to pursue and MBA and IIFT Delhi was always there on my list of dream B-schools to join due to its long standing reputation. IIFT Delhi has a very rigorous workload and the small batch size ensures better peer to peer communication as well as teacher to student interaction. Also, the career growth opportunities offered by IIFT make it undoubtedly one of the best places to pursue MBA.
Q: Apart from IIFT, which other MBA entrance exams did you take?
A: I took CAT 2012, XAT 2013 and NMAT 2013 apart from IIFT 2012.
Q: Which B-school calls did you convert for admission? What made you select IIFT over others?
A: I got selected by XLRI- HR, SJSOM (IIT Bombay), MDI Gurgaon and IIM Shillong. I chose IIFT because of its smaller batch size and placement opportunities.
Q: How different is IIFT entrance exam compared to other MBA entrance exams that you took? Did you take separate preparation for IIFT?
A: IIFT is quite different from other MBA exams since 100+ questions have to be answered in 2 hours and it includes a general knowledge section also. The time management techniques and the selection of questions to be chosen have to differ from other exams. However separate preparation for IIFT does not have to be taken just practicing previous years’ papers should be more than sufficient for preparation.
Q: How was your GD PI experience at IIFT?
A: The IIFT GD goes on for 45 minutes which gives everybody ample time to present their points of views. It also allows for a more organized and well rounded discussion. The essay also tests the participants on their clarity of thought and time management skills. The PI for me was slightly difficult but it was done more to see how one handles stress.
Q: CAT, MAT, TISSNET and now IRMA have changed their pattern from paper pencil based to computer based. Do you think IIFT should also transform the pattern?
A: Converting IIFT entrance exam to an online test might seem to be a natural progression. However, the normalization of scores is often ambiguous to students and a paper based test ensures everybody is on the same footing and makes the process more transparent.
Q: How is the experience of studying at IIFT? What is the USP of the institute?
A: At IIFT Delhi the time just flies by! There is always something or the other going on in the campus, be it competitions, late night TT and football sessions, parties or project submissions; as the saying goes there is never a dull moment.
What makes IIFT different from the other institutes, now where do I begin! In true MBA style I shall do it in bullets, in no particular order:
The academic rigour and the subjects taught are very pertinent to the industry and help students develop practical skills
The library and databases at our disposal are the best in the country allowing us to increase our understanding in our chosen fields
The stress on research ensures that the faculty is well updated to the current trends, their implications and new developments thus allowing for curriculums that are extremely efficient in practical.
And in the extracurricular department the list just goes on- UWL- IIFT’s reply to IPL, club activities, competitions and Quo Vadis the annual fest just to name a few.
Q: How important is the gender or academic diversity in a class of MBA? Is it justified to award extra marks to female or non engineering candidates to maintain diversity in the class?
A: Even though IIFT does not award extra marks to females or non-engineers it still has healthy gender diversity and academic diversity and this is important to ensure that there are interactions of different viewpoints leading to out of the box thinking and generation of new ideas. However to do this by imposing rules underplays the merit required to get into premier institutions.
Q: What are your career aspirations? Where do you want to see yourself five years down the line?
A: My career aspirations are to be in the marketing. Five years from now I see myself progressing to a role which will allow me to be integral to a firm in its marketing division in the capability of a manager.
Q: What would you advice the IIFT aspirants who would be taking the exam on 24th November?
A: The exam is more a test of nerves than anything else- choosing the right questions but more importantly leaving the ones that take time, attempting a decent number of questions from each section, thinking on your feet to beat the clock by using shorter methods and finally attempting to answer more question from the section that is your strength to ensure that your overall score also rises.
