AP ICET and CAT are two important management entrance exams in India, but they are different from each other in terms of exam pattern, syllabus and even competition level. AP ICET is a state-level exam designed for admissions into colleges within Andhra Pradesh. While CAT is a national-level test used for entry into top B-schools like the IIMs. Candidates who are preparing for admission to management schools this year can understand the difference between the two to avoid any confusion during their exam preparation.
In this article, we have discussed the AP ICET comparison with CAT, difficulty level and marking scheme etc here.
AP ICET exam is different from CAT in terms of exam pattern. Read below to get a quick overview of both the exams.

AP ICET Eligibility Criteria: The candidates must have completed their Graduation from a recognised university with at least 50 per cent marks in aggregate.
CAT 2026 Eligibility Criteria: The candidates must hold a Bachelor’s degree in any stream from a recognised university with 50% marks.
AP ICET is considered easy to moderate because most questions are predictable and based on standard concepts that repeat across years.
The Quant and Reasoning sections primarily test basic application of AP ICET formulas and logical patterns, rather than deep analytical thinking.
Candidates who practice AP ICET previous year papers and mock tests can quickly recognise question types and solve them efficiently.
The exam has questions which are shorter and less complex compared to national-level tests.
CAT is moderate to high in difficulty because it tests not just knowledge, but the ability to think critically under pressure.
Questions, especially in LRDI and Quant, are often layered and require multiple steps of reasoning, making them time-consuming and tricky.
The Verbal section focuses heavily on interpretation and inference, where answers are not obvious and require careful reading.

The AP ICET counselling is also multistage and consists of several different stages that candidates have to qualify to get a call for the final admission. Know about the AP ICET counselling process in the section below:

CAT does not have a single common counselling process for all colleges. The IIMs shortlist candidates and conduct further rounds such as the Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal Interview (PI) for MBA admission. For other MBA colleges that accept CAT scores, candidates need to apply separately and go through each institute’s own selection process.
Candidates who secure high marks in the CAT exam become eligible for admission to leading B schools in India, apart from the IIMs. However, those who have an AP ICET scorecard can get admission to MBA colleges in Andhra Pradesh only.
