While thousands of aspirants prepare for the upcoming MBA admissions 2027, several B-schools are quietly disappearing from India's management education landscape. As per the AICTE data in the last three years 43 MBA Colleges which had AICTE approval have stopped their MBA Admission. AICTE approval data reveals that 22 AICTE-approved MBA colleges have been shut down in 2025-26 season while 15 MBA colleges were closed in 2024-2025 and 6 in the preceding year that means in 2023-2024. Among the states where the most number of AICTE approved colleges were closed, Madhya Pradesh topped the list with 12 colleges being shut down. MP was followed by Uttar Pradesh (8) and Maharashtra (8). From general MBA programmes to specialised courses such as Business Analytics, Innovation & Entrepreneurship, Financial Management, Marketing Management and Family Business, dozens of management programmes will no longer admit students.
The AICTE approval data for the 2025-26 academic session shows that 43 MBA colleges have completely discontinued their management programmes and will no longer offer admissions. All of these institutes are private self-financing colleges, with Madhya Pradesh recording the highest number of closures (12 colleges).
The number of the AICTE approved MBA Colleges which have stopped MBA admission over the last years has risen from 6 in 2023-24 to 22 in 2025-26.

Now if we go by the trends of how gradually the number of the AICTE approved MBA colleges closed over three years we will see that the number rose from 6 to 22 in three years. This represents an increase of 267% in just two years.

The state-wise data reveals that the AICTE college closures are concentrated in a handful of states. Madhya Pradesh alone accounts for nearly 28% of all MBA college closures, with 12 institutes discontinuing admissions over the last three years. Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra follow with eight closures each, meaning these three states together account for 28 out of the 43 closures which is around 65% of the total number of colleges that got closed.

Pursuing an MBA continues to remain strong, with entrance examinations such as CAT, XAT, CMAT and state-level MBA entrance tests witnessing participation from lakhs of aspirants every year.
At the same time, the AICTE data suggests that the management education ecosystem is becoming more competitive. While new institutions continue to emerge and established B-schools expand their intake, some colleges have discontinued their MBA programmes due to a variety of institutional and operational reasons. The closures have largely been limited to private self-financing institutes.
