XLRI announced some major changes in the overall exam pattern. Let us have a look at the overall pattern and changes in detail.
XAT 2016 Exam Pattern
The structure of XAT 2016 has been changed to generic from dynamic. XAT is divided into two Papers, 1 and 2. Paper 1 comprises of VA, Decision Making, and QA &DI. As per the changed pattern, the number of questions in Paper 1 will be 78 to be completed in 170 minutes. Earlier, the total number of questions were not specified and the time to attempt this section was 140 minutes. A majority of the questions will be of objective type but will be subjective type in Paper 2. As per the officials, this section has become easy in terms of difficulty level, giving students an opportunity to solve all the questions within the given duration.

The format of Paper 2- GK and Essay is almost similar but has a few changes. The time allotted to answer this paper is now 35 minutes, compared to previous year’s 30 minutes. The number of questions in this section has been reduced to 25 from 30, making this section a bit easier for the students to attempt. This section will judge students risk-taking abilities.
XAT 2016 Marking Scheme
In terms of the changes in the marking scheme of XAT 2016, there is a negative marking of 0.05 marks after 13 unattempted questions. Hence, students have to restrain their choice towards the questions they want to un-attempt. “Beyond 13 questions, any unattempted question carries negative mark of 0.05. There is also negative marking of 0.25 marks for any wrong answer”, The XAT notification states.

According to the marking scheme of the exam, each question carries 1 mark and for each wrong answer, there is negative marking of 0.25 marks. This year onwards, negative marking scheme has been introduced for unattempted questions, where beyond 13 such questions there will be negative marking of 0.05 mark. Each question will have 5 choices. Test takers have to fill up the circle corresponding to the correct option fully with blue or black ball point pen. Using fountain or gel pen has not been not allowed in XAT 2016 paper.
XAT 2016 has been conducted on January 3 across centers in India. The overall difficulty level of the exam is very tough. Around 90,000 candidates took the test this year. The cutoff for XAT is decided on the basis of the difficulty level of the test. The results will be announced in the form of score cards. Yes this will limit your options for admission in MBA colleges as most of these MBA colleges look at past academic performance of the candidate. Your percentage will definitely be a hindrance in your admission into any top IIM college or XLRI.
You can always take admission in tier 2/3 management colleges.
