You have to keep one thing in mind, though. It is easy to read such articles and pieces for motivation, but the one thing you must always adhere to is to focus on the process and be committed to your preparation. Short-term hacks do not work, and it is best to remain focused on daily execution of your targets. This is the same principle that has made our favourite cricketer, MS Dhoni, the cricketer and star he is.
Let's start with the essential things you need to keep in mind.
How many questions to attempt in CAT 2024 to score 99 percentile? This is one of the common questions asked by CAT 2024 aspirants. To score a 99 percentile in CAT 2024, you typically need to attempt around 35 or more questions correctly out of 60. However, the exact number can vary depending on the difficulty level of the exam and the performance of other candidates. It's important to focus on accuracy and not just the number of questions attempted, as incorrect answers can lead to negative markings. Aim to solve questions you are confident about and manage your time efficiently during the exam.
For CAT exam preparation in 2024, it's important for candidates to aim for a specific score range right from the start. To do this, look at the previous years' CAT cutoffs for the colleges you want to get into. Here is the marking scheme for the CAT exam.
In the CAT exam, you get three marks for each correct answer and lose one mark for each wrong answer, but there’s no penalty for leaving questions unanswered. Non-MCQ questions don’t have negative markings, but they can be long or tricky.
It's best to answer only the questions you are completely sure about because only perfect answers will earn you full marks. Missing even a little can cost you points. Experts recommend that you don't need to attempt every question in the CAT 2024 paper.
The CAT exam pattern can vary from year to year, including changes in the number of questions and their distribution across topics. There’s no guaranteed way to score a 100 or 99 percentile. Success depends on how accurately you answer questions and how quickly you do so.
Good attempts is an indicator on how many questions the students must target to secure a good percentile in the CAT examination.Careers360 has performed a rigorous analysis on the previous year’s CAT exam paper and released the following good attempts which the candidates must keep in mind.
Section No. | Section Name | Total No. of Qs | Good Attempts |
I | VARC | 24 | 16-18 |
II | DILR | 20 | 9-11 |
III | QA | 22 | 9-11 |
TOTAL | 66 | 34-40 |
Effective time management is crucial to score a 99 percentile in CAT. Here are some tips and tricks to help you:
Understand the Exam Pattern: Familiarize yourself with the types of questions and the time allotted for each section. This will help you plan your strategy effectively.
Create a Study Schedule: Allocate specific time blocks for each section and stick to your plan. Regular study sessions with breaks in between are more productive.
Practice Time Management: During practice tests, work on answering questions within the set time limits. This will help you get comfortable with the exam's pace.
Prioritize Questions: Start with questions you find easiest to build confidence and save time for tougher ones. Avoid getting stuck on difficult questions.
Use Shortcuts and Tricks: Learn and practice shortcuts for calculations and problem-solving techniques to save time.
Regular Mock Tests: Take full-length mock tests regularly to gauge your performance and adjust your strategy as needed.
Review and Improve: After each mock test, review your mistakes and understand where you lost time. Focus on improving those areas.
Stay Calm and Focused: During the exam, stay calm and focused. Manage your stress and avoid panic, which can affect your time management and performance.
Your CAT score reflects the number of correct answers you’ve given, while your CAT percentile indicates your performance relative to other test-takers. A higher score generally leads to a higher percentile, but the exact percentile can vary depending on the overall difficulty of the exam and the performance of all candidates. Given below are the CAT initial estimates scores and corresponding percentiles based on the CAT 2023 official question paper.
Percentile | Score VA-RC | Score DI-LR | Score QA | Overall Score |

90 | 24 | 14 | 13 | 42 |
80 | 20 | 11 | 9 | 35 |

Hello aspirant,
A timetable is essential if you are preparing for the CAT in addition to your college coursework. It will give you an idea of how long it will take you to finish your syllabus and then set aside the appropriate amount of time for revision and mock exams. Without a set timetable, you risk taking your time and not completing your preparation as thoroughly as is necessary.
Thank you
Hope it helps you.
Hello Nikita,
To get into any of the top IIMs, such as IIM Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Calcutta, Lucknow, Kozhikode, or Indore, a good percentile in CAT is required, although academics play a vital role too. Let's break it down below:
CAT Score: 98+ percentile is an excellent score and makes one competitive.
Academic Scores:
Your 10th score at 84% is quite good.
A 12th score of 65% is on the lower side, which might hamper your chances at some of the top IIMs since they give weightage to past academic performance.
IIM Selection Criteria:
Every IIM has its own weightage for the scores of academics, CAT percentile, work experience, if any, and diversity.
For example, IIM Ahmedabad requires consistent academic records, while IIM Bangalore puts the strongest focus on work experience and diversified profiles.
Graduation: You are currently pursuing graduation, and your performance during that will also be considered in the shortlisting process.
While your CAT score is going to be the major pointer, your academic record-doing in class 12-is going to affect your prospects a bit at IIMs that place significant emphasis on your past performance. Still, you will have a healthy shot, at least at institutes like Lucknow, Kozhikode, and Indore, where a good score in CAT may offset lower marks in academics.
If you have diverse profiled extracurricular activities, leadership roles etc, or work experience, then it can build up your application further.
