Careers360: What motivated you to pursue MBA? What do you aspire for?
Abhipsa: I wanted to be a leader. Over the years I have witnessed many transformations in my persona, but this one thing has always remained with me. MBA gives a wholesome and diverse experience in a compact capsule. The knowledge one acquires in an MBA, and more importantly the life experiences one goes through in the 2 years brings out the best in one amidst the worst of circumstances. I want to learn the skills and put them to practice through these 2 years to end up being a successful leader.
Careers360: Which otherMBA entrance exams you appeared in ?
Abhipsa: Apart from XAT 2014 i appeared in CAT and scored a 96.67%ile. My performance was satisfactory and according to my preparations. I also appeared in TISSNET and scored a good percentile.
Careers360: Which other B-schools made final admission offers to you, and also why did you selected XLRI Jamshedpur?
Abhipsa: I converted final admisisons to all the colleges I received offers from. The list included all the IIMs except ABC, SPJain, TISS, MDI and XLRI Jamshedpur. I had visited XL quite a few times and was in love with the place. The experinced faculty, supportive seniors, conferences and events, ROI ar the factors which made XLRI top my list. All these seems very philosophical but is a fact.
Careers360: What was your preparation strategy for XAT 2014?
Abhipsa: I was more focussed on improving quantitative skills, and enhancing language skills was a continuous process for me during my preparations. I don’t read many books but am a frequenter at certain blogs and online sites. To make efficient use of the time you get while working, Smartphone helps!
Careers360: Do you think Coaching or Mentoring is important to crack XAT or any other MBA entrance tests?
Abhipsa: If you have commitment, nothing else is necessary. Coaching is a method only to make sure you adhere to preparation regularly. Commitment ensures that anyway. And with the growing digital media, everything necessary for preparation is just a click away for free.
Careers360: How did you manage XAT preparation schedule along with your working hours?
Abhipsa: Prioritizing and minimizing unproductive time is the key. Besides, adequate measures to maintain concentration and keeping one’s calm are necessary. Getting requisite amount of quality sleep and relaxation is paramount to this end.
Careers360: Please share your preparation strategy for the Quantitative Ability & Data Interpretation and Verbal Ability & Logical Reasoning separately?
Abhipsa: ForQA: Practicing questions from multiple topics thrice every week, and weekly revisions of harder problems. Doubts should be clarified right away and maintain a separate register for only hard questions (of different models) which came handy during revision. For me, understanding the reason to a particular process is the key to solve problems.
DI: Concentration, Patience and Practice: The 3 key words!
VA: Reading standard blogs and sites. Following one business daily and one national daily helps. For me it was The Guardian, The Economist and the Hindu. One should always make sure one reads the things which are in interest one For improved vocabulary, ‘Arts and Letters daily’ is good. Most importantly, I started to ‘think’ and ‘talk to myself’ in English.
LR: A good night’s sleep and loads of analytical thinking. Trying to develop an analytical thought process to apply in my work helped me automatically redirect my brain to the same mode every single time. And of course, practice is needed.
Careers360: How did you plan and work for Decision making and General Awareness section of the paper?
Abhipsa: DM: I learnt from situations encountered in real life. I feel, a clear thinking pattern is most important here. I never prepared from any material.Reading newspapers and noting down the major news for revision later is the key to tackle the GK section.
Careers360: What was your Time Management formula while taking the actual XAT paper?
Abhipsa: Devoting maximum time to QA as it was my weakest section and I could not afford to score too low. Also, chance for negatives is minimum in QA as you mark the answer only after you solve the question and are sure about it. In other sections the chance to be unsure about an answer is more. I divided my remaining time amongst the rest of the sections equally, choosing the easier questions to minimize risk.
Careers360: What is your advice for the MBA aspirants who will take XAT 2015?
Abhipsa: Following points are my advice for the XAT 2015 aspirants,
1. Have the commitment to excel
2. Work smart and with patience
3. Relax and Sleep adequately
4. Leave the rest to ‘The Force’
Careers360: How important are Recreational activities for you. Were you involved in any of the activities besides preparing for the exam?
Abhipsa: Yes, recreational activities are very important as it keeps the inherent abilities of the brain intact, which tend to be lost with a lot of stress during exams. I was the one arranging for picnics and outings at workplace to arranging events at my company’s accommodation. These were my methods of relaxing myself, besides sleeping a lot. After all, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
