how to study for Mba entrance exam??? [cat, iift, mat]

SUMIT AGARWAL 22nd Sep, 2019

Hi Ronik,

Studying for any exam requires a lot of thought process and planning. Be it MBA exam or any other exam an aspirant is giving. One’s ultimate objective is to reach the particular University or college that he dreams to be a student of. MBA entrance exams provide us a pathway to reach our objectives. As it is rightly said, “More important than the goal, the journey to reach towards the goal matters the most” . Yes, the journey, the preparation for MBA entrance exam matters a lot. It is therefore one of the crucial moments for any aspirant’s life.

Taking forward the preparation, the first step is to be very clear about the MBA program that the college is offering. How that program is relevant to shaping your big picture, and then decide whether to go forward or not.

How to Prepare for MBA entrance exams Language Skills

One of the main reasons why B-Schools test language skills in their entrance exams is because one has to be very clear in their written, speaking skills in B-Schools as well as in the corporate. One must know how to articulate properly one’s thoughts so that there is no ambiguous communication flowing around. One can improve this ability by reading newspapers, magazines and even get into a habit of writing his own thoughts for that matter.

A dictionary is an aspirant’s best friend when it comes to improving in vocabulary and grammatical usage. One can also watch how TV anchors perform on the television to get the blood flow right for their body language. This also will improve one’s listening ability.

Quantitative Skills

Undoubtedly one of the favorite subjects of engineering students is mathematics. Though Engineers have an advantage in this section, other stream students are not far behind in this nowadays. Also, the pattern and differential weightage of sections has reduced this advantage considerably in certain entrance exams. However, one must have a strong math background to gain some good marks in this section. Others who lack or haven’t been in touch with such mathematics background, have to prepare hard and close in their gaps if any. The following points can help them do so,

  • Take part in solving puzzles, riddles and quiz competitions
  • Solve enough number of problems from standard entrance exam books. Take good amount of online quizzes and make them as a habit
  • Give good number of mocks and review your results
  • Find out your weak areas and dedicate efforts to improve upon them
  • Get enough guidance from your friends who have been preparing for these entrance exams or those who have already been under such a hammer and have joined B-Schools
  • One can also join a coaching institute to help oneself better with understanding, and know where he stands in the competition

Now, these were the generics that one must be clear with before writing any entrance exam. There are many exams for which you have to change your strategy from other entrance exams. For example, CAT is a highly unprintable exam and one must be clear in his mind what strategy works for him to get a good score. It is not necessary that two persons strategy has to be the same. One must work on his or her strategy to excel in the exam. This he can build by giving different mock exams and analyzing their results. I suggest if a mock exam is for a 3 hour duration, one must dedicate double efforts to understand where he went wrong or which area is his strong point. Personally, I feel that for any exam, it’s the planning that matters the most and ideally 60% of the time should be spent on that. Keep this mantra in your mind, “Plan your work and work your plan” and you shall sail through.

All the Very Best!!!

Ankhi Banerjee 10th Sep, 2019

Hi,

You can definitely enroll in top B schools such as IIM and IIFT without any work experience as long as you obtain satisfactory CAT percentile. However, certain weightage or preference will be given to those students who have work experience already between one to five years.

Hello. You have mentioned in the above information that a undertaking is to be provided that a person appearing IIFT havent given any other MBA exams in 2019. But I am planning to give CAT as well. Does that means I cannot appear for IIFT?

snehasinha1718 Student Expert 8th Sep, 2019

Hey,

Its no where mentioned that if you appear for cat you won't  be able to appear iift or any other equivalent exams. You can appear for all other exams along with cat and have to fill the forms separately for other b-schools to wish to apply.

IIFT is a national-level management entrance exam conducted annually by National Testing Agency (NTA), for admission to its MBA (IB) program. IIFT 2020 will be conducted on December 1, 2019, in online or computer-based mode at around 18 exam centres across India. Around 75,000 candidates appeared for the exam the previous year.

Hope this helps.

I want to study in iift in Kolkata. how I will prepare for iift exam?

ADITYA KUMAR Student Expert 7th Sep, 2019

Hello there!

Greetings!

You need to give your best to crack iift . To prepare well,  the iift question paper can be split into three parts: concept-driven, practice-intensive and environment-sensitive.

  • Quantitative Ability & selected areas of Verbal ability are concept driven, which means that the questions depend heavily on core concepts. For example, a question featuring a term like "cyclic quadrilateral" is virtually impossible to attempt unless the corresponding concept is known. It is therefore suggested that you prepare the key concepts of Arithmetic, Algebra, and Geometry & Modern Math in the Quantitative Ability sections in a thorough manner.
  • To tackle the Verbal Ability section , one has to focus on improving one's reading speed because the paper typically features 3-4 Reading comprehensions. Also, you should prepare the basics of grammar in order to solve sentence correction questions. Practice is required to solve usage-based questions like analogy, fill in the blanks etc. A good vocabulary proves to be an asset while solving different kinds of vocabulary questions that feature in the exam.
  • Data Interpretation & Logical Reasoning are practice-intensive, practice-intensive, which means that familiarity respect to similar questions is a key determinant here. It is advisable to practice different Data Interpretation question types like pie charts, bar graphs, data tables, line charts & combinations thereof, for the DI section. For Logical Reasoning, you need to practice questions on arrangements, family trees, complex data situations etc for the LR section.
  • General Awareness is an environment-sensitive area and requires familiarity with both static and current components of the environment. For static GK one should focus on topics like history, geography, economics, political system etc. For current GK, you can refer to our GK junction section and use our various current affairs related sections.
  • Overall, the IIFT test can be best managed if you follow a three-pronged approach - ensuring concept familiarity, developing application orientation and sharpening test-taking strategies.
  • While familiarity with previous test patterns and cut-offs helps, too much scrutiny of trend analysis may be digressing at times.
  • You need to evolve as a test taker on that day, approach it with an open mind and go with the flow!

You need to follow above points to crack iift.

thankyou

How to prepare for the gk section of the IIFT exam ?? Any suggestions like any online platforms or apps ....??

Kshitij Raj 26th Jul, 2019

First and foremost, see where you stand. You can download the past IIFT GK papers

As you would have seen from the two past year papers, there is a healthy mix of static General Knowledge and current affairs in the IIFT exam. The questions are quite reasonable in nature and are something which a reasonably well-informed person (not just an MBA-aspirant) should be aware of. The questions which are slightly off-beat are typically to do with International Trade and similar stuff. Well – it is called the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade. You can’t really blame them now, can you! And trust me – IIFT’s GK section is very well designed. There are MBA entrance exams that ask questions like – “How many hearts does an Octupus have?” In case you are thinking that I am joking – I am not. This was a question in SNAP 2012. While clearing the cutoff is the first goal, scoring well in GK can also do wonders for your overall chances of getting a call from IIFT. It is a section which will barely take 10 minutes and can really make a difference to your overall score. There are plenty of resources that are available on the web to improve your GK. You can also look at some books like the Manorama Yearbook and magazines like Competition Success Review.

Hope this helps
